Chapter 454 - 453: The Blind Spot
Location:The Liminal Observatory, Between Dimensions / Seven Peaks (projection)
Date/Time:Concurrent with TC1855.05.16-17 (time differential applies)
The Liminal Observatory existed outside the framework of mortal time, which meant that Kairos had no excuse for the amount of it he spent watching a single screen.
Thousands of crystal displays floated in precise geometric patterns around the central chamber, each one a window into a different world, a different conflict, a different thread in the vast tapestry of dimensional reality that the Keepers of the Accord had maintained since before mortal civilizations learned to stack stones. Most showed the slow, predictable rhythms of worlds progressing through their natural cycles — cultivation societies ascending through tribulation, technological civilizations pushing against the boundaries of their understanding, the occasional war or cataclysm that rippled across a dimensional cluster before settling back into equilibrium.
Kairos monitored them all. It was his function. His purpose. The reason he existed.
But his attention kept drifting to Ascara.
Specifically, to a mountain on Ascara’s western continent where a formation network hummed through living architecture and a gate stayed open while a road filled with people walking toward it. And on the wall above that gate, a figure he could identify by the way she pressed her palms against stone when her thoughts outpaced her body.
She wasn’t sleeping enough. He could see that from here — not through spiritual perception, which the observation network didn’t provide at this distance, but through the simpler evidence of how she moved. The economy of her gestures had shifted, conserving energy she didn’t have. She forgot to eat unless someone brought food directly to her. She stood on the wall when she should have been delegating.
He recognized the pattern because he’d watched it before, from a different vantage point, on a different wall, while shadowspawn clicked in a dead forest and a town held its breath behind stone gates.
"My Lord."
Kairos turned from the screen. The movement was deliberate — pulling his attention from Ascara required an act of will that he chose not to examine too closely.
