Chapter 453 - 452: Verification
Location:Seven Peaks — Main Gate, Command Center, Ashford Crossing
Date/Time:TC1855.05.16-17
Three days in, and the road hadn’t thinned.
Raven stood at the gate station at dawn, clearing her fourth false-positive flag before the sun crested the eastern ridge. The man was sixty-two, a retired clerk from the Fourth District’s eastern quarter, and his meridians carried the same scarred discoloration as every other arrival from within two hundred kilometers of the growth zone. Corruption exposure. Months of breathing air that had been subtly leeched of its spiritual vitality, living on soil that the organism had touched through the ley lines without anyone noticing.
"You’re clear," she told him. "Medical station to your left. Tell them I referred you for the treatment protocol."
He thanked her and shuffled toward Mira’s triage line, joining the queue of people who didn’t know what they’d been tested for and were too exhausted to ask.
Raven wiped her palms on her trousers. Her life-sense had been running continuously for three hours. At Soul Ascension, the drain was manageable — she could sustain it for the better part of a day before it started to dull — but the precision required to distinguish corruption residue from parasitic infiltration demanded focus that made everything else feel like it was happening behind glass. Every person she scanned was a decision: clean, or not clean. Safe, or a threat wearing a safe face. And the margin between the two was thinner than anyone outside this gate station understood.
"Day three totals are projecting at fourteen hundred," Marcus said, appearing with his datapad. He’d stopped sleeping in shifts and started sleeping in intervals — twenty minutes here, forty there, wedged into whatever corner was closest to the logistics board. It showed. "That’s up from twelve hundred yesterday and eight forty-seven on day one. The curve isn’t flattening."
"It won’t flatten until the road empties, or we run out of capacity. How’s housing?"
"Modular units are keeping pace. Cedric’s teams are running three shifts across all satellite sites. Confederate bio-engineers have started growing their own structures at the southern settlement — Tomas says the first living shelters should be habitable by tomorrow. Food is stable — Long gold bought us a six-week grain contract through the western merchants, and Lin Yue’s agricultural wards are holding in the southern corridors."
"The bottleneck is here."
Marcus didn’t pretend otherwise. "The bottleneck is the scanner line. Average processing time per arrival is four minutes. For anyone who flags — even a false positive — it jumps to twenty. You’ve cleared eleven flags since dawn. That’s nearly four hours of your time on a task that could be distributed."
