Book 1 of Rebirth of the Technomage Saga: Earth's Awakening

Chapter 452 - 451: The First Thousand

Location:Seven Peaks — Eastern Wall, Main Gate, Reception Terrace, Residential Quarter

Date/Time:TC1855.05.14-15

Raven hadn’t moved from the eastern wall since the courier disappeared over the ridge two days ago. Not continuously — she’d eaten, slept in the chair Marcus had hauled up to the observation post without being asked, reviewed reports, signed authorizations. But she kept coming back to this stretch of parapet, the one that looked east toward the road that climbed out of the valley and wound through the foothills toward the lowland districts. The road that, according to Naida’s relay network, was no longer empty.

"Fourteen relay stations have reported movement in the last six hours," 7T9 said from her shoulder. His voice carried the particular cadence he used when organizing data he suspected she’d find distressing. "The composition is predominantly civilian. Family units. Livestock. Draft animals. The pace is consistent with foot travel carrying heavy loads."

"How far out?"

"The nearest group will reach the primary approach within four hours. The furthest detected concentration is eleven days of walking east-northeast."

She pressed her palms against the stone. Sylvara’s roots threaded through it — she could feel the faint hum of the living architecture beneath her hands, the mountain breathing.

"They didn’t wait for the framework."

"No. They did not." A pause. "The framework was dispatched forty-seven hours ago and has not yet reached its destination. These people departed before it existed."

Raven looked east. The morning sun threw the foothills into sharp relief, and somewhere beyond them, families were walking toward a mountain they’d heard about from rumors and relay broadcasts and Medicine Hall healers who’d treated their children for free. They weren’t coming because an Emperor told them to. They were coming because the garrisons had stopped answering and the livestock were dying, and they’d watched their neighbors go away for two days and come back different, and nobody in the capital seemed to care.

She straightened. "Get Marcus. Get Thorne. Wake Taron if he’s sleeping."
