Book 1 of Rebirth of the Technomage Saga: Earth's Awakening

Chapter 451 - 450: The Held Breath

Location:Multiple — Seven Peaks, Ashford Crossing

Date/Time:TC1855.05.12

Bjorn was making hinges.

Not weapons. Not formation-enhanced components or spirit-touched steel or the thousand variations of lethality that the forge had produced over two years. Hinges. Forty-eight of them, laid out on the cooling rack in neat rows of twelve, each one stamped and shaped and drilled with the precision that Bjorn applied to everything, because the thing being made didn’t determine the quality of the making.

The modular housing units needed hinges. Doors needed to open and close. Evacuees who’d walked away from everything they owned needed to walk into a room and shut the door behind them and feel the particular safety of a closed door between themselves and the world. Hinges made that possible. Hinges were the smallest, most forgettable piece of a house, and they were the piece that mattered most when you were exhausted and frightened and needed to be alone.

The forge was quiet at this hour. First light through the open doors. The furnace banked to working heat. The Singing Swords humming from the peak above — a sound Bjorn heard the way he heard his own heartbeat, constant and present and carrying the assurance that the world was still turning.

Forty-eight hinges. Enough for twenty-four doors. Twenty-four families.

He started on the next batch.

Bess drove the nail with three clean strokes.

The modular frame accepted it — Cedric Vane’s design, the joint that locked when the nail seated properly, the satisfying click of wood meeting wood meeting steel in the configuration that meant this will hold. Six weeks of construction work had taught her hands what her mind had always known: that the difference between a thing that lasted and a thing that didn’t was care applied at the point of connection.

Lily sat on the supply stack beside her, sorting nails by size. The girl was five and had opinions about which nails went in which pile, and the opinions were correct because Lily had been watching Bess work for six weeks and had absorbed the system the way children absorbed everything — completely, silently, and with a competence that exceeded explanation.
