Chapter 450 - 449: What She Offers
Location:Seven Peaks — Command Center, Verdant Spire
Date/Time:TC1855.05.08-10
The question arrived from six directions in three days.
Different words. Different channels. Different levels of formality and urgency. But the same question, stripped bare: Where do our people go?
Patriarch Zhao asked it first, through the cultivation network, because Zhao Chen had survived a hundred and fifty-eight years by asking the important question before anyone else thought to. Patriarch Long asked it second, through the diplomatic relay, because Kaelith Long was already moving fourteen hundred people west and needed to know where west ended. The Wu Clan asked it third, through Tianlong’s law enforcement couriers, because pulling assets out of the eastern districts was meaningless if there was nowhere to pull them to.
The Emperor asked it fourth, through Kael’s diplomatic cipher — a single line decoded in the Verdant Spire at dawn on the eighth: The Empire has no eastern evacuation infrastructure. What does the autonomous territory propose?
Autonomous territory. Still not sovereign. But asking for help.
The replies carried more than questions. Patriarch Zhao offered cultivators — fifteen veterans from the Zhao family’s eastern estates who could reinforce Seven Peaks’ defensive perimeter while the territory expanded. Patriarch Long offered gold — the evacuation of fourteen hundred people was expensive, and Kaelith had instructed his financial stewards to establish a supply account accessible to Seven Peaks. The Wu Clan offered intelligence — Tianlong’s twelve independent contacts would report directly to Naida’s Shadow Pavilion, expanding the surveillance network into areas that Seven Peaks’ own agents couldn’t reach.
Allies bringing what they had. Each contribution different. Each one filling a gap that Seven Peaks couldn’t fill alone.
Drake asked it fifth, not because she needed somewhere for Guild personnel but because her verification scouts were reporting civilian conditions in the eastern districts that matched the garrison data: communities going quiet, trade routes thinning, the slow contraction of normal human activity in a zone that the Empire still classified as stable.
The Confederacy didn’t ask. They were already walking.
