The Viltrumite Across the Worlds

Chapter 274: Fairy Law Falls

At the same time, a civil war was raging within Fairy Tail.

Makarov’s grandson, Laxus, could no longer tolerate what he saw as Makarov’s pathetic, cowardly version of Fairy Tail. He swore that he would create the strongest guild in the world.

"Hahaha!"

"You can all die together!"

Laxus clasped his hands and activated the Grand Magic he had inherited from his grandfather, Fairy Law, one of Fairy Tail’s Three Great Fairy Magics.

"Laxus, stop!"

Natsu stared anxiously at the spell Laxus was preparing to unleash.

"You’ve got to be kidding me. This enormous Magic Power is almost comparable to Jose Porla’s. Is Makarov’s grandson some kind of monster?"

Gajeel Redfox, Phantom Lord’s former ace, had received a personal invitation from Makarov to join Fairy Tail. He had also been Jose Porla’s most valued mage.

Now, Gajeel stared at Laxus in disbelief.

The seemingly endless Magic Power surging from Laxus was already comparable to that of Phantom Lord’s former master.

No, it might even be greater.

"Monsters..."

"I can’t imagine what made Master Jose think attacking Fairy Tail was a good idea."

"First there’s Jovian, who destroyed our entire guild single-handedly."

"Then there’s Laxus, who’s completely beyond anything we could handle."

"Even Titania is absurdly powerful."

Gajeel could no longer hold back his thoughts.

Jose must have been an idiot to claim that Phantom Lord could easily defeat Fairy Tail.

"Laxus, stop!"

"Everyone outside is..."

Just as Laxus was about to unleash Fairy Law, Freed staggered toward the entrance of the cathedral.

Mirajane had beaten him mercilessly, and his entire body was covered in injuries. He looked at Laxus with sorrow in his eyes.

"I don’t care who’s out there!"

"They’re all going to die!"

"Fairy Law!"

Laxus’s expression twisted with rage. He roared as he clasped his hands together, releasing an enormous amount of Magic Power.

Boom!

At that exact moment, a muffled explosion came from above.

A blurred figure smashed through the ceiling and drove one foot into Laxus.

Boom!

An endless roar shook the cathedral.

Laxus, who had been seconds away from casting Fairy Law, was knocked unconscious instantly. He collapsed without another word, his condition unknown.

"What happened?"

Everyone stared wide-eyed into the cloud of dust.

"It’s Jovian!"

Natsu sniffed the air with a nose even sharper than a dog’s and shouted in delight.

"Am I late?"

Jovian stood on Laxus’s head with Ultear slung over his right shoulder and the pink-haired Meredy over his left.

"No, your timing was perfect."

Natsu rose from the ground and smiled at him.

"Take this guy somewhere for treatment."

Jovian nodded, then kicked the unconscious Laxus toward Natsu.

"All right..."

Natsu was about to catch him when Freed jumped forward and wrapped both arms around Laxus, looking overjoyed to have him back.

"Laxus was defeated instantly? You’ve got to be kidding..."

"Oh, it was Jovian. Never mind."

Gajeel’s pupils contracted at first, but the moment he realized who had defeated Laxus, everything made sense.

This was the man who had instantly crushed Jose Porla.

Defeating Laxus should have been effortless for him.

Laxus was undoubtedly powerful, but aside from Fairy Law, Fairy Tail’s seemingly invincible judgment spell, he had not yet surpassed Jose in every respect. There were even certain areas where he remained inferior to a genuine member of the Ten Wizard Saints.

There was nothing surprising about someone who could crush Jose doing the same to Laxus.

"The spell disappeared!"

Throughout Magnolia, countless Fairy Tail mages looked up at the magical circle vanishing from the sky.

They stared at it in confusion before crying out in shock.

"What happened?"

"I don’t know, but the important thing is that the spell wasn’t activated."

Erza struggled to her feet and addressed the others.

"So he failed?"

"You foolish grandson..."

Makarov lay in a hospital bed, sensing Laxus’s Magic Power rapidly dissipating.

Unlike everyone else, Makarov had known from the beginning that Laxus’s spell would not succeed.

That did not mean Laxus would have been unable to cast Fairy Law.

The supreme judgment spell could not harm anyone the caster did not truly consider an enemy. It would never have injured the Fairy Tail members bearing the guild mark or the civilians living throughout Magnolia.

No matter how twisted Laxus’s thoughts became, his heart would not allow Fairy Law to strike them.

"Jovian is back!"

"He knocked Laxus out instantly!"

While everyone was still wondering what had happened, Natsu’s voice echoed through the telepathic link connecting the guild members.

"Jovian is back..."

Everyone sighed in relief.

Simply hearing that Jovian had returned filled them with an almost instinctive sense of security.

Although Jovian was not officially an S-Class mage, he had already gained the status of one within the guild. In the eyes of many Fairy Tail members, he had even surpassed their S-Class mages and stood second only to Makarov.

After all, Jovian had protected his companions and single-handedly defeated all of Phantom Lord. He was a powerful mage capable of defeating a member of the Ten Wizard Saints, making him comparable to their own master.

More importantly...

"Jovian, there’s something I need to tell you."

"After you defeated Jose Porla and stopped Jellal’s plan, the Magic Council decided to appoint you as a new member of the Ten Wizard Saints."

Natsu excitedly delivered the good news.

"No."

"What good is a worthless title like that?"

Jovian immediately shook his head.

The Ten Wizard Saints?

What an embarrassing title.

Later in the story, people with that title were constantly defeated in seconds. It was complete garbage, and Jovian had no interest in it.

"What?"

Natsu stared at him in disbelief.

More than ten minutes later, every member of Fairy Tail gathered inside the guildhall.

They pulled out party poppers and fired them into the air as they shouted together.

"Congratulations to Jovian on becoming one of the new Ten Wizard Saints!"

"Fairy Tail now has two Wizard Saints!"

"There’s no question about it, we’re the strongest guild in the Kingdom of Fiore!"

The Fairy Tail mages cheered endlessly.

They seemed even more excited about Jovian becoming a Wizard Saint than they would have been if they had received the title themselves.

"Congratulations."

Mirajane still worked hard despite having bandages wrapped around her body and an adhesive bandage on her face. She poured Jovian a drink.

"Thanks."

"By the way, Mirajane, these two want to join Fairy Tail. Help them choose their guild marks."

Jovian pointed toward Ultear and Meredy.

"Of course."

Mirajane took out the guild stamp and smiled as she placed the Fairy Tail mark on both Ultear and Meredy.

"Hey! What’s that supposed to mean?"

"I never said I wanted to join Fairy Tail!"

Ultear turned toward Jovian indignantly.

"This mark is incredibly useful."

"Once you have it, all you need to do during a desperate situation is shout that you’re a Fairy Tail mage. You’ll immediately receive an unbelievable surge of power."

"You’ll understand when you try it."

Jovian looked at Ultear and spoke with complete seriousness.

"What kind of nonsense is that?"

Ultear’s cheeks reddened slightly.

She had to admit that Jovian looked surprisingly handsome when he was serious.

"Hahaha!"

"Who are these two girls, Jovian?"

"Are you betraying Mirajane?"

Happy flapped his wings and flew over while Jovian and Ultear were joking around.

"What are you talking about?"

Jovian raised an eyebrow, unable to understand what Happy meant by betraying Mirajane.

"What?"

"Are Mr. Jovian and Mirajane dating?"

Lucy immediately leaned closer, eager to hear the gossip.

"Of course!"

"Back when Jovian and Mirajane handled the guild’s logistics, everyone called them the most handsome and beautiful support team in Fairy Tail. They were always helping each other like a married couple!"

Happy explained why he had accused Jovian of betraying Mirajane.

"I seem to remember something like that."

Erza nodded repeatedly, confirming that she had heard the same rumors.

"Oh, Jovian, your betrayal has broken my heart."

"Or at least, that’s what I’d like to say."

Mirajane played along with the joke before explaining the truth.

"Jovian and I were only close friends who got along well enough for people to mistake us for a couple."

"Back then, the two of us were the only people in the entire guild responsible for logistics."

"Boo."

"That’s boring."

Happy looked disappointed by Mirajane’s explanation.

"You lying little gossiping cat. Spreading rumors like that should be a crime."

Lucy’s eye twitched.

She grabbed Happy’s head and began twisting it violently.

"You’re killing me!"

"Lucy, you’re terrifying!"

"You’ll never get married if you act like this!"

Happy’s face twisted in pain as he continued taunting her.

"Thanks for the encouragement!"

"If I never get married, I’ll eat you for the rest of my life!"

Lucy tightened her grip.

"Still, I feel like I’ve seen your face somewhere before."

While everyone else gathered around Ultear, Gray approached her with a deep frown.

He studied her face, unable to shake the feeling that she looked familiar.

It was almost like seeing someone who had died long ago.

"Wait, could you be...?"

After staring at Ultear for a long moment, Gray suddenly seemed to realize something. His expression became one of complete disbelief.

"Gray, that has to be the most overused pickup line in history."

"It’s seriously pathetic."

Happy and Natsu laughed at him.

They were certain that the girl Jovian had brought back would mercilessly reject and humiliate Gray.

Instead, something completely unexpected happened.

"You’re Gray, aren’t you?"

"Come with me."

Ultear grabbed Gray and pulled him out of the Fairy Tail guildhall.

"What?"

Every Fairy Tail member stared after them in shock.

"His pickup line actually worked?"

"Wait, wasn’t that girl brought here by Jovian?"

"Doesn’t that mean Gray is completely screwed?"

The guild members whispered among themselves, eagerly anticipating the sight of Jovian beating Gray senseless.

Jovian ignored them.

He knew why Ultear wanted to speak with Gray.

Their relationship was complicated.

To be precise, Gray was not someone Ultear had ever loved. He was someone she had hated since childhood because she believed that Gray and Lyon had stolen her mother from her.

"I knew I recognized your face."

"You’re Ur’s daughter, aren’t you?"

Gray studied Ultear several more times before finally nodding.

The woman standing before him looked almost exactly like a younger version of his teacher, Ur.

"Well..."

"So you figured it out."

"In that case, I’ll make this brief."

"Don’t go around telling everyone about me."

"I don’t want anything to do with that woman."

Ultear, the beautiful girl whose name meant Ur’s tear, had decided to sever every remaining connection between herself and her mother.

"Is that so?"

"You’re still angry with Ur, aren’t you?"

"But whenever Ur looked at your photographs, she would quietly cry by herself."

"I think there must have been some misunderstanding between you."

"Unfortunately, it may be too late to resolve it now."

Gray’s voice was heavy with emotion.

He had once seen photographs of Ultear as a child and knew that she was his teacher’s biological daughter.

He also knew how deeply Ur had suffered after losing her little girl. That loss was precisely why she had come to cherish Gray and Lyon so much.

Gray sometimes wondered how wonderful it would have been if both Ur and her daughter were still alive.

At least he had now met his teacher’s daughter with his own eyes.

Unfortunately, he would probably never see Ur again.

"You still don’t understand."

Ultear sighed.

An unbearably cold aura began rising from her body.

"Then I’ll tell you exactly why I hate you, Lyon, and Ur."

"I hate you two weaklings who clung to each other for warmth."

"But what I hate even more is that you remained by Ur’s side and still failed to protect her!"

A terrifying wave of cold erupted from Ultear’s body.

"I’ll use this magic, a magic you know better than anyone, to show you why staying beside Ur was a mistake."

"You were nothing but weaklings!"

Endless ice burst from Ultear’s body.

"This is..."

"The same magic Ur used."

"So it really is true."

Shock filled Gray’s face.

Once again, he was witnessing the same Ice-Make Magic his teacher had used.

Beautiful flowers of ice blossomed around Ultear like frozen roses.
