Chapter 275: Countdown to Oración Seis
Molding Magic was known as the freest and most imaginative form of magic. Every mage shaped it differently, and even two people taught by the same master would develop distinct styles.
Lyon's Dynamic Ice-Make allowed him to create numerous ice beasts that could move freely under his control. Gray's Static Ice-Make focused on weapons and other inanimate objects. As their teacher, Ur possessed an Ice-Make style that resembled beautiful roses blooming before everyone's eyes.
The Ice-Make Magic Ultear now unleashed was just like her mother's, breathtakingly beautiful.
It was also extraordinarily destructive.
Ur's Ice-Make Magic had been incredibly powerful. She had even created the Grand Magic Iced Shell and possessed enough strength to contend for a position among the Ten Wizard Saints. Had Ur survived into the present day, she would undoubtedly have become one of them.
Ultear was like her successor. Ur had not lived long enough to see the present era, but her daughter had.
Boom!
A terrifying flower of ice erupted, blasting Gray away.
"Do you understand now? Even without meeting either of you or receiving formal training in Ice-Make Magic, my power is still overwhelming!"
"You were given everything my mother had, yet this is all you amounted to!"
Ultear glared furiously at Gray.
She was angry that her mother had never come looking for her. She was even angrier that Gray and Lyon had received all of Ur's love yet had failed to protect it.
They had been given everything Ultear had desperately wanted but could never obtain.
"Maybe I'm jealous. Maybe it's something else."
"All I know is that I'm furious right now, and I really want to beat the hell out of you."
Ultear stared coldly at Gray.
"..."
Gray remained silent and made no attempt to fight back.
Ultear was right about one thing. He had failed to protect Ur.
Had Gray possessed enough strength when they faced Deliora, perhaps Ur would never have died.
"You're not going to fight back?"
"Do you think letting me hit you will make me feel better?"
Ultear demanded.
"..."
Gray continued to say nothing.
It seemed he intended to silently endure every attack she threw at him.
"Forget it."
"This isn't satisfying anymore."
"But don't think this means I forgive you. I'll never forgive Ur either!"
Ultear turned and walked away, no longer looking at the badly battered Gray.
"..."
Gray silently wiped the blood from his body and returned to the guild without saying a word.
"In any case..."
"Now that this incident is over, I have an announcement to make."
"Laxus, as of this moment, you are expelled from..."
When Ultear returned to the guild, she found that Laxus had regained consciousness.
He looked at everyone with an incredibly complicated expression. After Jovian had knocked him out with a single strike, the arrogant and unrestrained Laxus had finally come to his senses.
He stared at his grandfather, unable to think of anything to say.
Deep down, Laxus knew that he had gone too far.
Both the Thunder Palace and Fairy Law, the ultimate judgment spell he had tried to use at the end, were Grand Magic spells capable of devastating all of Magnolia.
Such magic should never have been directed against one's companions.
Even if he was expelled from the guild, Laxus could not complain.
He had brought this upon himself.
"Hold on, old man."
"You shouldn't make such absolute decisions so quickly."
"He only used a few boring little spells. Even if they'd gone off, no one would have died."
"There's no reason to expel someone as weak as Laxus."
Just as Makarov was about to expel his grandson, Jovian interrupted him.
"Jovian, don't defend Laxus. After what this ungrateful brat did, he no longer deserves to be called family."
Makarov was touched that Jovian would speak on Laxus's behalf, but reason told him that he could not let his grandson escape punishment so easily.
If he did, his authority as guild master would disappear.
"That's right, Jovian! You saw what Laxus did!"
"Exactly!"
"Letting him off like this would be far too lenient. He has to understand how badly he screwed up!"
Several weaker background members of the guild began shouting.
They had contributed absolutely nothing during Laxus's civil war and had nearly wet themselves whenever they saw him. Now that Laxus had lost, however, they were suddenly brave enough to condemn someone they could never defeat themselves.
"All of you, be quiet!"
Erza frowned and shouted angrily at the surrounding crowd.
"Uh..."
The moment they saw Erza's furious expression, everyone closed their mouths and no longer dared to interrupt.
"You don't have to beg for mercy on my behalf, Jovian."
"I know what I did."
Laxus glanced at the people around him before speaking quietly to Jovian.
"Master, I've been investigating a particular guild for quite some time. I'm not sure whether you know about it."
Jovian looked at Makarov.
"The guild you've been investigating?"
"Could you mean..."
"Oración Seis, one of the three great Dark Guilds of the Balam Alliance?"
Makarov appeared to understand what Jovian intended and feigned surprise.
"That's right."
"Since Laxus claims to be strong, we should give him an opportunity to prove it."
"That way, he'll stop acting like a child who has to parade around in front of his own companions and pretend he's powerful."
"Wouldn't you agree, Laxus?"
Jovian placed one arm over Laxus's shoulder.
"You're calling me weak?"
A vein bulged on Laxus's forehead.
He accepted that he could not defeat Jovian, but he still hated being called weak.
"Are you unhappy about it?"
"Then I'll give you a chance. The Magic Council has nearly confirmed the location and movements of Oración Seis."
"Destroy them, and you can remain in the guild."
"Fail to defeat them, and you can get the hell out."
"You're free to choose your own team. I'll even allow you to request assistance from other guild teams."
"What do you think?"
Jovian looked coldly at Laxus.
"Sounds perfect."
"But forget asking another team for help. The Thunder God Tribe and I will be more than enough."
Laxus snorted, his voice filled with absolute confidence.
Even when facing an infamous Dark Guild as powerful as Oración Seis, he did not appear concerned.
"Is that so? Then it's settled."
"Oración Seis has six members, so I'll allow you to bring six people. You can select them yourself."
"We'll wait for the Magic Council to send us their information over the next few days."
"But I'll warn you now. If the operation fails or you run away before the battle is over, I'll consider you to have voluntarily left the guild."
"You will also be permanently forbidden from rejoining Fairy Tail."
"Can you accept that?"
Jovian stared at Laxus.
"Who do you think I am?"
Laxus's gaze was unwavering.
He was clearly confident that he could destroy Oración Seis.
"Good."
"In that case, I assume none of you have any objections."
Jovian nodded and turned toward the other Fairy Tail members.
"This..."
"Defeat Oración Seis almost single-handedly?"
"That's a powerful guild even a member of the Ten Wizard Saints would have trouble defeating!"
"They're among the most dangerous criminals on the continent!"
The Fairy Tail members exchanged looks before nodding.
They no longer had any complaints.
"Master, as long as Laxus defeats Oración Seis, how about giving him one more chance?"
After receiving the guild members' agreement, Jovian turned toward Fairy Tail's master.
"Hmph."
"Fine. I'll give him one more chance."
Makarov spoke with a stubborn expression, but there was a trace of relief beneath his snort.
Laxus was an endless source of trouble, but Makarov loved his grandson more than anything.
"If there's nothing else, I'm leaving."
"Take care of yourself, old man."
Laxus turned to leave the guild.
"Laxus, take me with you!"
Before he could get away, Natsu ran after him and began pleading.
While most people trembled at the mere mention of Oración Seis, Natsu saw them as exciting opponents he could not wait to fight.
"No."
Laxus rejected him immediately.
"Laxus..."
Natsu's eyes filled with tears. He looked ready to drop to his knees and beg.
"Idiot Natsu, Laxus is obviously taking us!"
"Exactly. Get away from him."
"Stay back, you annoying bastard! The Thunder God Tribe doesn't accept idiots!"
The three members of the Thunder God Tribe formed a human wall in front of Laxus, blocking the shamelessly persistent Natsu.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?"
Elsewhere in the guildhall, Makarov approached Jovian and asked hesitantly.
"The Magic Council sent word that they're assembling an Allied Forces unit."
"Jura Neekis, who currently occupies the lowest position among the Ten Wizard Saints, will be participating."
Jovian pulled the little old man closer and spoke quietly.
"An Allied Forces unit?"
Makarov immediately sighed in relief.
Once he heard that Jura, another mage with the strength of a Wizard Saint, would also be there, his concern faded.
With Laxus and Jura, two Wizard Saint-level mages, participating in the operation, Oración Seis was finished no matter how dangerous they were.
"There will be several other powerful mages as well."
"Besides, someone from our guild will inevitably force his way into the operation."
"You know who I mean."
Jovian stared directly at Natsu.
"I understand."
Makarov knew that such a lineup was as safe as they could reasonably make it.
Several days later...
Laxus waited patiently at the meeting place where he and the Thunder God Tribe had agreed to gather.
"What's taking them so long?"
"Did something happen to Freed and the others?"
"No. With Freed's strength, there shouldn't be anyone who could..."
Laxus trusted the abilities of his subordinates, particularly Freed.
In most other guilds, Freed would have easily qualified as an S-Class mage.
While Laxus was thinking, a slow-moving carriage approached him.
"What took you so long?"
"Huh?"
"Erza?"
Laxus frowned when he recognized the person driving the carriage.
"Hahaha!"
"Obviously, we already took them down!"
Natsu jumped out from inside the carriage, laughing even as he doubled over and vomited beside the road.
"What?"
Laxus could never have imagined that Natsu and the others would attack their own guildmates just to secure the opportunity to fight Oración Seis.
"Don't worry. Their injuries are fairly serious."
"They'll have to remain in the hospital for at least a month."
"We should hurry and get moving."
Erza spoke politely to Laxus.
"Do you people have any idea what you've done?"
Laxus frowned as his eye twitched repeatedly.
"Just get in the carriage."
"We already lost a lot of time dealing with the Thunder God Tribe. If we don't leave now, we're going to be late."
Erza stared at Laxus as though he was the one wasting their time and should hurry up and get aboard.
"I..."
Laxus was speechless and visibly annoyed.
Their lateness had absolutely nothing to do with him.
Unfortunately, they really were running behind schedule, so he reluctantly climbed into the carriage.
"Hey."
"Hi there!"
Inside sat Ultear, wearing her usual cold expression, Lucy waving with a foolish grin, Gray looking as though he had severe stomach cramps, Natsu already turning green again after returning to the carriage, and Happy.
"..."
Laxus remained silent.
He found an open seat, closed his eyes, and began meditating.
His stomach was already churning violently, but he was desperately trying to maintain his composure and avoid vomiting.
Time slowly passed.
As Erza drove, she explained the joint operation to everyone.
They would first travel to Blue Pegasus Master Bob's palace, where they would rendezvous with the other guilds before launching their combined attack against Oración Seis.
"..."
Laxus frowned when he learned that there would be other participants.
He wanted to ask why no one had told him that the operation involved other guilds, but he could not open his mouth without risking disaster.
"..."
Ultear was also silent.
Her reason had nothing to do with motion sickness.
She simply had no idea why Jovian had ordered her to participate.
What possible connection could there be between her and Oración Seis?
"Once Ultear meets the leader of Oración Seis, a lot of questions should finally be answered."
Standing in the distance, Jovian watched the carriage disappear down the road and quietly spoke to himself.
Time continued to pass.
Eventually, the carriage came to a stop in front of Blue Pegasus Master Bob's palace.
"It appears we've arrived."
"Everyone, disembark!"
"Let us prepare for our decisive battle against the evil Oración Seis!"
Erza stood before the palace and enthusiastically drew the knight's sword at her waist.
"..."
After her declaration, Laxus silently climbed out of the carriage.
Natsu followed in a half-conscious state. Gray emerged while giving Ultear an extremely complicated look, and Lucy stepped down without knowing what she was supposed to do.
"Hold on. Including me, don't we have more than six people?"
"Why exactly did I have to come?"
Lucy's expression became strange as she counted them.
Laxus, Natsu, Gray, Erza, Ultear, and Happy already made six.
"Come on."
"I'm a cat."
Happy automatically excluded himself from Fairy Tail's official team count.
