Chapter 345: Open The Wall Or Leave Them
Orra Gate’s west service arch opened twenty centimeters before the Seat locked every utility around it.
The manual release wedges held.
Wall crews lost powered jacks, work lights, and the water used to cool their drills. The Seat kept those utilities inside registered emergency purpose by sending them east toward permanent closure.
Pera Don brought cooking oil from apartment stores. Workers fed it into hand drills while children held mirrors from protected windows.
"West arch is acting outside city authority," the Seat said through the stone.
"West arch has 317 current answers," Pera replied.
"Household result remains 238 for closure."
Both counts stayed visible.
Black Grass reached the arch from outside. It consumed the relation between the outer stones while leaving each block in place. Workers could put hands into one seam and touch four different walls.
Elara directed the open defense from Mercy with no line into Caleb’s body.
Orra crews divided the work into three supports.
Water keeper Daro Fen held the district main and could release it at the west tank.
Exit keeper Una Don held the occupied hallway route from the far side of Pera’s closed hall. Her release was a laundry-chain wheel she could turn alone.
Wall keeper Bessa Ilt held the arch stones under two manual wedges.
Caleb’s removable plate supplied vertical force beneath Bessa’s current block. A separate Orra keeper accepted it. Caleb remained at Foundry Twelve on an external support frame and claimed no city destination.
"Water first," Elara said.
Daro opened one district-main section. Clean water reached the west tank and stopped before the black seam. The Seat tried to reroute it east. Daro’s local wheel held west until three occupied buildings filled emergency drums.
He released before the main became a wall command.
"Exit next. Una, current direction?"
Una answered from behind Pera’s hallway.
"Open toward my daughter. Close if the blade crosses my floor."
Pera tied a red cloth to her end of the hall line.
Una turned the laundry wheel.
The closed hallway opened as a narrow service walk between their buildings. Pera could see her mother’s bare feet beneath a sheet of wall stone.
Nine residents crossed from Una’s side. Matta Ire crossed toward it because her chosen room stood there and no employer owned that route.
Una stayed at the wheel.
The Gate Seat offered to register the service walk if all users accepted permanent outer status. Pera refused on her own line. Matta refused on hers. The other nine gave separate answers.
Six refused.
Three asked for the protection terms again while crossing.
The walk remained local and unstable.
Bessa drove the first west wedge deeper.
Caleb accepted vertical compression through his plate. The arch lifted fourteen centimeters. Residents cleared loose stone under separate hand lines.
Black blades entered the opening.
They grew along the plate’s lower edge and pushed sideways.
Caleb felt the load turn through his right hip. His missing left-side correction would once have countered it before the angle reached the plate keeper. Now his silver continued pushing down while the block slid east.
"Side load moving," he said.
Elara had already seen Bessa’s chalk mark shift.
"Plate keeper release. Bessa, abandon first wedge."
The plate keeper pulled Caleb’s pin.
Bessa released her wedge.
The block kept moving on stored vertical force. It struck the second wedge and threw Bessa across the work trench. Her left knee bent under the wall.
The west arch dropped onto the exit walk.
Pera fell toward Una. Matta caught Pera’s belt from the far side. The red cloth disappeared under stone.
Black Grass entered the service walk through the crushed cloth route.
It reached Una’s floor.
"Close your wheel!" Pera shouted.
Una pulled the laundry chain. The first pull stopped halfway because wall weight trapped two links. She wrapped the chain around her forearm and stepped backward.
The Seat opened a permanent interior route beside her.
"Registered household protection available," it said.
Una looked at the open interior door and then at the laundry wheel.
If she crossed, the service walk stayed open through the wheel. Black Grass would reach nine occupied apartments and the west water line.
"Pera, are you current?"
"Current. Matta has me."
"Then keep your count."
Una stepped away from the protected door.
She pulled again.
The trapped chain tore through her left forearm. The wheel completed its turn.
The service walk separated on both sides of the wall block. Pera and Matta landed on the west trench. Nine residents remained on chosen sides. Black blades lost the hallway route before reaching the apartments.
Una stayed visible through the closing gap.
The released wall stone crossed her chest when her floor returned to its registered position.
The Seat opened treatment beside her. Una could not enter it under the weight.
Pera heard her mother answer her current name once.
Una Don died before Orra medics lifted the block.
Tali entered her as local exit keeper, wanted direction stated, protected route refused, current release completed, and death under wall return.
The Seat entered `ONE REGISTERED HOUSEHOLD LOSS`.
Pera struck that line from her kitchen pipe after crews carried Una’s body out through a local window route.
"Her name stays above her registration," Pera said.
Orra’s public record accepted the correction after 211 current residents signed it. The Seat retained the household line below.
Protected morgue transport and a household death credit followed. The credit would reduce Pera’s shield shifts for six years and preserve Una’s registered share through her apartment.
Pera accepted body cooling and transport. She refused the inherited share.
The Seat processed both answers separately. Una reached the morgue without crossing the blade front. Pera kept her current apartment and received no shift reduction.
Una’s current body never entered household succession.
"You saved her body after your wall killed her," Pera said. "Write both."
The Seat added the transport beneath Tali’s death record. It offered no apology and erased no service.
The outer wall still had to open.
Bessa worked from a stretcher with her knee splinted. She gave the second-wedge angle to Matta, then released wall-keeper authority before medication took effect.
Matta accepted the wedge and no district office.
Caleb’s plate lay inert beneath the fallen block. He could grow a new one and could not give it the lost side correction.
Orra crews used three short building jacks under separate keepers. Each carried less force and had a local drop handle.
Elara called their actions one at a time.
The west arch opened two meters.
Black Grass crossed the threshold in six narrow lanes. Residents cut five through current object and purpose pairs. The sixth took an empty clinic annex and stopped when its staff released every treatment route from the building.
The annex remained standing and unreachable.
Outer south retained current exits.
It lost one wall block, one clinic annex, and permanent protection across the west service arch. Bessa’s knee required surgery. Daro’s water line stayed local. Twenty-four previously unreachable residents answered after the opening.
Una remained dead.
The Gate Seat withdrew outer south from its network firing vote because the district no longer shared full wall status. It kept the rest of Orra Gate protected and kept its own request active.
Across the target field, three populations watched the open-wall cost through separate channels.
North Pump had Black Grass inside two wells.
Hesh Roof had one current stair for 904 people.
Kiln Steps had lost its grain road and half its local keepers.
All three requested the Woman’s faster corridor terms before Elara’s distributed equipment could reach them.
Her counsel sent one contract to each population.
The top line promised three current rescues within seven days.
The second line made every accepted corridor inheritable for the full term.
