Chapter 336: Cut One Third
Caleb hit the freight-tunnel ceiling with Cutter One still inside his chest.
Concrete split above the drainage channel. Fara Doss threw the last child across the local release line and covered him with her body.
The ceiling dropped six centimeters.
Caleb caught it on his right forearm.
His left side continued falling. Sela’s cutter rail bent under forty-two tons of silver trying to occupy the tunnel below. The blade chewed sideways through Caleb’s sternum and threw white metal across Hall One.
"Hold your cut!" Elara called.
Sela kept both hands on the feed. Her power keeper, Mako Pell, pulled voltage down before the warped rail could drag the blade into Caleb’s retained side.
Bram had not begun the lower cut.
His blade now stood two meters above its marked line.
"I lost the hip target," he said.
"Your target moved with him," Kestrel answered. "Wait for a current mark."
Caleb’s right arm buckled another centimeter. The freight ceiling drove into the drainage channel’s brick arch.
Fara crawled toward the exit keeper. Thirty-one settlement residents stood beyond the drain, clear of the fall zone but still linked to their return route.
"Release us from the foundry," she said. "Keep our return claim on paper."
The drain keepers released both ends.
The settlement disappeared from Caleb’s map.
His arm stopped bending.
Fara and the others remained on the north embankment. Their bedding and water stayed below. Tali preserved the signed return condition under local custody before any agency could mark the tunnel vacant.
The route body searched for another occupied support.
It found Hall Two.
Furnace One’s crew stood behind a cut rail with a receiving ladle ready. The hostile route joined their ladle to Caleb’s left thigh. Forty tons shifted toward six workers.
Furnace keeper Juno Rell released the rail.
The ladle stayed at Hall Two. Its receiving relation vanished. Caleb’s falling mass struck bare ground between halls and opened a trench through both foundations.
Juno lost two fingers when the release wheel kicked backward.
She wrapped the hand in her apron and kept the key away from foundry command.
"My stop remains mine," she said. "Send another keeper for treatment."
A local medic met her beyond Hall Two. Juno transferred the furnace key only after naming the cut, her injury, and the disabled rail.
Caleb felt the route body move again.
It pushed bridge lane marks into his right shoulder, searching for retained mass. He narrowed the internal opening around its center. Silver compressed below his ribs until his left thigh expanded across the lower cutter bed.
Bram found the current boundary.
"Target marked," he said.
Elara’s left hand shook on the body-direction control. Her right shoulder strap had slipped during Caleb’s fall. She could either fix it or hold his retained side away from the lower blade.
She kept the direction control.
"Caleb, right hip toward me. Five centimeters."
He rotated around the arm supporting the tunnel roof.
The false bridge inside him pulled west. Elara corrected by two centimeters and stopped talking while he completed the motion.
"Hold."
Bram’s blade entered both hips.
The cutter teeth struck silver carrying the lost train’s first-station route. Hall One filled with rail noise. Carriage Ten appeared above the trench for less than a second, packed with sixty copied outlines and no people.
Suri Marr’s recorded emergency call came from the blade housing.
"Metro Freight failure. North switch unavailable."
Suri heard it from her rehabilitation ward and cut her own link.
"That call already cost my leg," she told Rina before leaving. "It gets no second use from me."
Bram advanced through the copied carriage.
His cutter lost fourteen teeth. Two struck the safety cage. One passed through Mako Pell’s upper arm and pinned him against a control cabinet.
Mako retained consciousness. He released Sela’s power before anyone touched him.
Cutter One stopped three centimeters short of its full path.
The remaining connection carried Caleb’s sternum, bridge bearings, and the route body’s upper center. It was wide enough to hold his retained body to the removed third.
Sela could not restart until a new power keeper accepted the generator.
The hostile route began rebuilding through that connection.
Hara’s yellow glove pushed out of Caleb’s chest. Sol’s tow hook followed. Pavel’s pack outline opened between them and filled with lane paint.
The blank head formed above Caleb’s shoulder.
Twenty-three voices read their own missing statuses.
Families cut the sound from every public feed. Evidence recorders kept separate copies without broadcasting them into the foundry.
Ena Venn remained on Caleb’s private link.
"It will use Asha last," she said.
The blank head turned toward Elara.
Asha’s voice asked, "Do you want contact?"
Elara’s thumb came off the direction control.
Caleb’s retained side shifted toward the blade.
She pressed the control again with the side of her palm.
"That sentence belongs to me and Caleb," she said. "You found it in his body. You have no direction here."
The route body drove the tow hook through the bent cutter rail.
Sela left her station before it reached her. Her local release keeper dropped the entire rail into the foundation trench, taking the unfinished blade with it.
Caleb and the removed third tore farther apart.
Seven silver cables remained across the upper cut.
Bram finished the lower cut. Caleb lost his left leg at the hip and half his right-side balance web. The removed mass struck Hall One’s west foundation and folded it toward Inland Bridge Nine.
Caleb stayed above the tunnel on one arm and one shortened leg.
His chest could no longer lift the roof.
Fara’s settlement remained clear. With its occupied relation gone, local demolition crews released the tunnel ceiling into the empty channel. Caleb fell through after it and landed on the abandoned rails below.
The seven upper cables stretched across twelve meters.
The route body climbed them toward his retained heart.
Mako’s replacement was Deya Sorn, Pavel’s cousin and a quarry-generator keeper. She accepted power control after Mako named the injury and revoked his role.
Sela took a portable thermal lance from the second crew.
"Rail is gone," she said. "I can cut cables by hand."
"Each cable carries a different route," Kestrel said. "They may throw you somewhere else."
"Then mark my current floor after every one."
Rina took the marks.
Sela cut the first cable and appeared on Southline Eight’s deck. The freighter crew pushed her back through before the opening sealed.
The second cable dropped her into Night Ground’s north gate. Aren’s people returned her under a two-keeper hand line.
The third opened above the bridge river. She cut it from the foundry side and lost the lance head to water.
Four cables remained.
Sela fitted a new head.
The fourth carried no visible place. It removed six centimeters from the lance and left her hands where they began.
The fifth took bridge lane paint out of Caleb’s retained sternum.
The sixth screamed in Asha’s voice until Ena ordered the evidence feed muted.
One cable held forty-two tons to Caleb’s current chest.
"That one is yours," Sela told him.
Caleb reached across the trench with his right hand. His fingers no longer knew long-span support. The gap felt wider than his body could cross.
Elara gave him two centimeters of direction, released, then gave one more when he asked.
He caught the cable.
The route body pulled every stolen destination against his hand.
Caleb tore the cable from his sternum.
Thirty-three point nine percent of his current silver hit the foundry floor as a separate body.
Caleb shrank to seven meters and toppled onto his right side. His left hip ended in a rough silver plane. Half his chest sagged without its internal brace.
He answered his name and raised two right fingers.
Across Hall One, the removed third stood up.
Its map opened thirty-one roads around the foundry.
