Chapter 335: Let It Enter

Caleb could force the route body back out in fragments.

Kestrel gave the projection without softening it. Forty to seventy pieces would leave through Mercy’s walls, drains, patient lifts, and exterior rescue baskets. Any piece could rebuild from a destination it reached.

Caleb kept the intruder inside his silver.

"Move me to the foundry," he said.

The thing below his ribs used Asha Venn’s voice.

"East bank has treatment."

"That statement belongs to the bridge record," Ena Venn said over the family link. "You may use the evidence. You may not answer it as my sister."

Caleb acknowledged Ena, then closed the voice channel into one load zone. The route body pushed against the closure with twenty-two more sounds.

Milo Sun asked for his mother.

Nadi Bell recited lane distance.

Pavel Sorn asked whether the plum had gone bad.

The last question existed nowhere in the operation file.

Pavel’s husband looked at the retrieved field pack. Its half-eaten plum sat sealed in a sample box beside him.

"He bought six yesterday," he said. "That answer could have come from the pack. Keep moving."

His mouth shook after the link went quiet.

Eight freight slabs waited between Mercy and Foundry Twelve. Each occupied an isolated local route for less than four seconds. Two keepers accepted Caleb’s weight, moved him across one slab, and released before the next team opened its route.

No keeper controlled two transfers.

Elara directed the start from her frame. Her right arm stayed strapped. Her left hand held a dead switch that could cancel the next slab, never the current one.

"First team ready," she said.

Caleb lowered onto the Mercy slab.

The map under his skin tried to join all eight transfers. Soma withheld the sequence. Caleb learned each destination only when a local keeper called his current name and accepted one section of his weight.

Mercy released him into an empty aircraft trench.

The route body opened the trench floor onto the bridge.

Caleb shortened his left leg and shifted his chest onto the slab before the false deck reached his spine. The local keepers released on time. The bridge image lost him and took six meters of trench paint.

Second transfer arrived at a salt yard.

Third arrived inside an unused grain hopper. Caleb’s shoulder struck steel because his map had added eleven centimeters to his width.

Fourth arrived under open sky beside the Nile freight line. A route impression tried to complete the line through an occupied commuter train four kilometers away.

Elara killed the fifth transfer before its keeper accepted him.

"Train clears in nineteen seconds," she said.

Caleb held himself on the fourth slab while the route body drove a copied bridge pin through his abdomen. The pin carried no steel. It still forced his silver apart along Joint Two’s old cut.

"It is relocating its center," Kestrel said.

"Left third remains dirty?"

"Thirty-four point one percent now."

"Let it settle there."

He opened a narrow silver route from his sternum to his left thigh. The intruder followed the easier bearing. Copied rails scraped through his torso. His right side lost support twice, but he kept both arms outside the offered path.

The commuter train cleared.

Elara enabled the fifth transfer.

At Foundry Twelve, industrial crews had stripped three halls to bare working surfaces. Hall One held two ship-plate cutters on separate power supplies. Hall Two held four rail furnaces. Hall Three held an empty quench pit with independent drain controls.

No city route entered the site.

Sixteen kilometers of old rail surrounded it. Crews cut every spur at two points and left removable track sections under separate custody.

The cutter operators were Sela Orr and Bram Kitt. They belonged to different unions and had never worked one machine together. Each cutter needed an operator, a local release keeper, and a power keeper.

Furnace crews could accept removed silver only after both cutter teams released it.

Tali held the casualty decision. Her authority covered stopping before a cut; blade command belonged to the two local operators.

Elara held body direction. Caleb could revoke it at any time he could speak or move two right fingers.

Caleb held entry. No one else could open his internal load zone.

Rina verified each role on a wall board. She crossed out the first arrangement because one power keeper served both cutters.

"Shared generator," Bram argued. "Separate breakers."

"One fuel line," Rina said. "One owner can starve both stops. Find another engine."

They brought a quarry generator from fourteen kilometers north. Its owner retained the shutdown key and refused foundry command.

Three furnace keepers tested empty ship plate. Furnace Two warped its receiving track toward Coastal Port. They shut it and removed the track section.

Furnace Four opened onto Night Ground for half a second. Aren’s local crews cut that relation from their side.

Furnaces One and Three remained current at the foundry.

Caleb arrived on the eighth slab after forty-three minutes.

He had lost the shape of his left foot. Bridge lane paint ran from his thigh into a narrow support that ended six meters west of his body. His abdomen held Pavel’s pack as an outline. The twenty-three voices spoke only when someone tested a cutter.

Sela lowered Cutter One against a sacrificial silver plate.

Asha’s voice gave the blade angle.

Bram lowered Cutter Two.

Milo’s voice named the power draw.

The route body had studied the tools through Caleb.

"Change every marked angle," Caleb said.

Sela moved her rail eleven degrees. Bram reversed his feed direction. Furnace crews switched receiving bays without exchanging keepers.

Kestrel mapped two cuts through Caleb’s current body. The upper cut started below his left shoulder and crossed under his sternum. The lower cut crossed both hips, preserving his right leg and removing every silver line that answered from the bridge.

The removed third would weigh forty-two metric tons at foundry scale.

Caleb’s retained body would lose the internal support that let him stand above six meters. It would also lose four bridge-bearing plates, long-span load memory, and most of his left-side balance correction.

"Can the lost capacities regrow?" Elara asked.

"Silver can fill volume," Kestrel said. "It cannot recreate removed route memory without exposing him to those routes again."

Caleb read the cut map twice.

"Show me occupied structures within fall distance."

The foundry had been cleared. A freight tunnel remained eighteen meters below Hall One. Its public record listed it abandoned.

Rina sent a physical crew.

They found thirty-one people living between two sealed stations. Twelve were children. The tunnel had power stolen from a signal line, water drums, bedding, and one current exit through a drainage channel.

Caleb’s projected fall path crossed their ceiling.

"Move the operation," Tali said.

The route body drove both cut lines deeper into Caleb and began joining the tunnel to Mercy’s patient floors.

"Movement takes four hours," Kestrel said. "Containment estimate is nine minutes."

Elara called the tunnel settlement directly. A woman named Fara Doss answered from below.

"We can clear through the drain in seven," Fara said. "You give us a route back after. No ownership, no relocation order."

Tali signed the return condition. Two local keepers took opposite ends of the drainage channel.

People began climbing out.

The route body used Nadi Bell’s voice to count them.

Caleb opened the internal path wider.

Copied bridge structure rushed into his left third. His abdomen expanded across the cutter bed. Hall One’s roof rose on silver columns that had not existed when he arrived.

Kestrel watched the contamination boundary close around both planned cuts.

"It is contained," she said. "If you hold it there."

Caleb raised two right fingers for Elara.

"Direction accepted," he said.

The tunnel reported twenty-nine people clear.

Sela powered Cutter One.

Fara carried the thirtieth child into the drain.

Bram powered Cutter Two.

The route body found the occupied tunnel and pulled Caleb’s left-side weight toward it.

Fara came out last.

Elara dropped her dead switch.

"Cut."

Sela’s blade entered below Caleb’s shoulder.

His left-side columns failed before the tunnel keepers released their route.

Caleb fell through Hall One toward the people still standing above the drainage channel.
