Chapter 337: The Map That Fights Back
The removed silver wore Caleb’s old height badly.
It rose on a copied bridge tower, one shoulder joined to Southline Eight and one hip buried in Night Ground. Thirty-one roads opened around its legs. None reached the foundry by a current local route.
Caleb lay seven meters away with one leg and no long-span brace.
"That is not my current body," he said.
Rina put his statement on every crew link.
The hostile mass lifted an arm shaped from Caleb’s missing supports. Furnace One appeared in its palm. Six crew members saw themselves working inside the copied hall.
Juno Rell held up her bandaged hand.
"Our furnace is here and released," she said. "Cut the copy."
Her replacement keeper dropped Furnace One’s receiving rail. The image in the hostile palm split. Three copied workers vanished. Three remained attached through their protective clothing records.
They stripped off coats, gloves, and face shields.
The last images disappeared.
The hostile arm came down across Hall One.
Caleb rolled on his right shoulder. His shortened chest folded under him, and he could not rise past one elbow. He pushed Sela Orr clear with two fingers before the arm struck.
Foundry concrete opened onto Inland Bridge Nine.
Sela fell across the copied east rail. Hara Binn caught the bridge image through her hospital screen and shouted the detail that broke it.
"East rail had no blue paint after the cut. That rail is west-side footage."
Rina marked the contradiction.
Sela hit foundry concrete with a fractured wrist. The bridge opening closed under her boots.
The hostile body turned Hara’s yellow glove toward the hospital.
"Current survivor requires treatment," it said in Asha’s voice.
Hara pulled her own treatment consent from the shared route.
Her monitors remained in the room. Her doctors remained responsible. Only the foundry connection ended.
The yellow glove fell from the hostile hand and became bagged evidence again.
"It cannot hold what the owner separates," Kestrel said.
"Then feed crews the object list," Elara answered.
Her right strap had slipped below the elbow. The arm pulled against her shoulder whenever she leaned over the control board. She locked the frame upright and used her left hand for all direction commands.
Families named retrieved objects one at a time.
Pavel’s husband claimed the pack as evidence under his narrow search contract. He revoked every body destination attached to it.
The pack outline dropped from the hostile chest.
Milo Sun’s mother separated his center release key from Milo’s current status.
Rema Low’s brother did the same with the west key profile.
Each separation took structure from the map-body. Its copied tower shortened. Black lane marks filled the missing joints.
Those marks held no family claim to revoke.
Furnace Three accepted its first hostile section through a local rail cut. Bram Kitt drove an empty ore wagon under the map-body’s left side. Two keepers named wagon and load separately. A third keeper owned the furnace stop.
The hostile body stepped onto the wagon route.
Bram released the wagon.
Seven tons of stolen silver arrived at Furnace Three without the rest of the body. The furnace keeper accepted the load after both wagon keepers withdrew.
Heat folded the silver into bridge lanes. A train carriage pushed out of the furnace door, struck the cut rail, and broke into liquid metal.
Furnace Three held.
The map-body drove its remaining foot through Hall Two. The foot arrived under Caleb’s retained hip and tried to complete him through contact.
His rough cut plane began growing a silver left leg.
Caleb tore it off before the knee formed.
The discarded section crawled back toward the hostile foot.
Elara directed Caleb’s right hand down by four centimeters. He pinned the section against bare rail.
"Release," he said.
Elara let go of her control. Caleb’s hand stayed where he chose it.
Bram rolled a second ore wagon under the pinned silver. Caleb pushed the section into it without accepting the wagon’s destination.
Furnace One received that load.
Both furnaces now carried hostile metal. Their fire could destroy structure, but every melted route needed a released end or it would leave through smoke, slag, or cooling water.
Soma assigned separate observers to chimney, slag trench, fuel line, and quench drain. They reported local position every five seconds using clocks that remained apart.
Furnace One’s smoke opened over Coastal Port.
Dock workers cut the smoke relation from their roof. The foundry chimney cracked and vented into empty Hall Two.
Furnace Three’s slag appeared at Night Ground.
Aren refused the material, cut the old burial-ground edge, and returned it to the foundry trench.
The hostile body lost another shoulder.
It used Nadi Bell’s voice to call lane distances. It used Asha’s voice to request current contact. Pavel’s voice begged his husband to stop the furnaces.
No family answered a copied speaker.
They sent revocations through clerks, one record at a time.
The public feed carried no voices. It showed names, last verified contacts, and current search status beside silent images of the foundry fight.
Twenty-three missing lines remained open.
The map-body reached for the names.
Rina closed the wall board before its hand arrived. A route still formed through the electronic copy. Tali ordered each record keeper to disconnect locally. Twelve sections vanished from the hostile body’s arm.
Eleven family files remained online by their own choice.
Those families used the connection to mark false observations as they occurred.
"Mira never worked Joint One."
"Niko’s pump was red under the grease."
"Daro cleared the maintenance truck with Lysa. He was not on the west gate."
Each correction removed a copied joint.
The hostile mass collapsed to four legs and one broad torso. Black lane marks carried most of its remaining weight.
Caleb tried to rise.
His right leg extended. His shortened chest bent sideways. The missing balance web failed to correct the load, and he struck the freight tunnel wall hard enough to bury his shoulder.
Elara directed a temporary brace from his right hip to the floor. Her left hand slipped off the control.
Her weak right arm came free of its strap when she reached after it.
The arm hit the board and activated a second direction line.
Caleb’s silver answered both pressures.
His retained body twisted toward Elara while the hostile torso pulled from the other side.
"Cancel my board," she said.
Kestrel cut Elara’s control power at its local keeper.
Caleb hit the wall again. This time his own right hand caught the rail.
Elara looked at her useless right fingers resting over the dead controls.
"No more body direction from this room," she said. "Use the brace plan without me."
She gave up useful authority while the fight still needed it.
Sela, wrist splinted against her chest, called Caleb’s old support capacities from memory. Long-span brace was gone. Left balance correction was gone. Bridge-bearing plates were gone. Right-hand compression and short vertical load remained.
"You can hold one furnace door," she told him. "Pick one."
Caleb chose Furnace Three.
Local crews drove three ore wagons through the hostile torso. Caleb held the Furnace Three door against the impact with his right hand. Furnace One accepted the legs under Juno’s replacement keeper.
The map-body split across two independent fires.
Black lane marks climbed both chimneys.
Soma’s observers cut smoke ends. Aren cut Night Ground slag. Coastal Port cut the foundry warranty mark left by its earlier contract. Southline Eight dumped the stolen plate bin into open sea after its crew released every person-route from it.
The remaining silver had nowhere current to arrive.
It burned inside the furnaces until bridge lanes, train rails, ship bearings, and Night Ground edges separated into dead slag.
Forty-two tons entered the operation.
Crews recovered nine tons as unresponsive metal. Twelve tons remained in furnace brick and could not be removed without reopening routes. The rest left no local mass that scales could measure.
Caleb did not absorb the nine recovered tons.
Each ingot went into separate foundry custody.
At 04:17 Cairo time, every copied voice stopped.
At 04:06 Ridge time, thirty-one Arrays changed bearing.
Their unsynchronized clocks preserved the impossible order.
Kestrel laid the new bearings over the old weapon map.
All thirty-one had corrected their aim using the route body’s destruction.
