Chapter 334: The Map Under His Skin

Mercy’s freight room acquired a second south wall while Caleb stood in its center.

The original wall remained behind the loading rail. The new one cut through a locked medicine cage and opened onto Southline Eight’s freighter deck.

Three deckhands stared through the opening. One held a welding mask. Another had been asleep under a tarp.

"Close your local doors," Caleb told them.

"We did," the welder said. "This one came from your side."

Elara ordered Mercy’s occupied floors off every shared lift route. Each ward retained stairs, exterior rescue baskets, and its own release keeper. Moving patients took twenty-eight minutes.

The wall moved six meters before they finished.

It crossed the freight room without breaking concrete. Wherever it passed, objects acquired destinations from Caleb’s silver map. A crate of surgical tubing reached Coastal Port. A floor drain opened above Inland Bridge Nine. One overhead lamp illuminated Night Ground’s north gate.

Caleb held his arms away from his body.

"People next," he said.

Rina stood outside the isolation line with two cameras pointed in opposite directions.

"Confirmed. The room is completing routes in order of nearby use. Supplies went first because Mercy names them for transfer. Staff routes are building now."

Elara’s rehabilitation frame clicked as she backed toward the exterior release.

"Clear the room. Keep four observers on independent links."

Caleb watched the silver street plan under his chest. Each missing defender still held an individual line, but the moving point beneath his heart had redrawn their ends. The bridge line crossed the ship. The ship crossed Night Ground. All of them fed the false south wall.

A freight nurse named Keva Lorn reached for the door.

The floor under her left boot became a hospital corridor in Coastal Port. Her right boot stayed at Mercy.

Caleb threw a removable plate under her hip before the split reached her knees. The plate carried no destination of its own. It gave Keva one current support while she lifted her left foot.

Elara pulled the exterior release.

The port corridor vanished. Keva landed on Mercy concrete with a torn ankle and both legs attached.

Caleb’s thrown plate turned east after she left it.

It slid into the false wall.

"Do not retrieve that," Elara said.

Caleb had already stopped.

Keva crawled across the isolation line under her own arms. A local medic splinted her ankle without placing a treatment route through the freight room.

The moving point under Caleb’s heart added the medic’s clinic.

"It learns from refusal too," Rina said.

Soma checked the thirty-one Array clocks. None matched Mercy. Nine showed the bridge cut occurring again. Four showed Southline Eight before the train arrived. Night Ground’s Array displayed a blank bearing and one current name.

Caleb.

Kestrel shut down the name feed. The blank bearing remained.

Elara sent the other staff out. She stayed beyond the exterior release with her left hand on its lever.

"Your full body can finish any broken route it has touched," she said.

"For a few seconds."

"The map has removed your few seconds. It is finishing them after you stop."

Caleb watched his lost plate appear on the freighter deck. The welder knocked it into an empty steel bin without touching silver.

"Full silver kept the bridge from taking the city," he said.

"You never reached the bridge."

"It kept other places."

"Yes. It also remembered all of them."

Her frame lowered her into its supported seat. The right shoulder strap carried most of her arm. She adjusted it with her left hand and took two tries to catch the buckle.

Caleb moved toward her.

The floor drew a silver line between his foot and her chair.

He stopped far enough away that the line could not reach the wheel.

"I hate standing here while your hand misses a buckle," he said.

"I hate needing the third try. I still choose who gets the buckle."

She caught it on the third.

"Current choice," Caleb said.

"Current distance," Elara answered. "Keep it until the line dies."

Rina tested the map with unowned objects. A stone from Cairo stayed in place. Hara’s bagged glove drew a bridge bearing. Pavel’s field pack produced four routes, including one that passed through Caleb’s abdomen.

Every object retrieved from a lost relation strengthened the moving point.

They removed the objects from Mercy. The map kept their lines.

Tali suspended all searches through Caleb’s body. Families retained their individual search files. Coastal Port kept Pavel’s object corridor available under its narrow contract, but no route could terminate in Cairo or Mercy.

The false south wall thinned.

Caleb counted twenty-three impressions below his skin. Their voices had ceased. Their bearings pressed harder as people left.

Isolation made the room less crowded and the map more certain.

Rina placed four empty route targets around the freight room. Each target had two keepers and a manual release. Caleb sent a fingertip thread toward the first target.

The map ignored it.

He touched the second.

Inland Bridge Nine appeared across both targets and trapped the keepers between copied rails. They released before the rails closed.

Caleb pulled his thread back. Six centimeters stayed behind as a silver road.

"It is taking active mass now," Kestrel said.

The road rose from the floor and formed a narrow leg.

It had no foot. Its lower end entered the bridge deck. Its upper end joined the false wall. A shoulder grew from Caleb’s lost plate on Southline Eight and arrived in Mercy through the wall.

Separate route scraps were assembling one body.

The deckhands on the freighter tipped the steel bin into an emergency furnace. The lost plate climbed out before the heat reached full burn.

Caleb felt it move as pressure under his tongue.

"It wants inside," he said.

"Can it take you from the floor?" Elara asked.

"Only pieces. It cannot tell which routes belong to my current body."

"Can you?"

Caleb closed his hand around the shoulder groove. Every silver section answered him. Four removable plates reported from separate custody. The stolen plate reported from the false wall. A sixth answer came from under Inland Bridge Nine.

That piece had never belonged to him.

"Yes," he said. "Right now."

Elara called for an industrial containment site with no occupied route within ten kilometers. Cairo offered an abandoned rail foundry. Ridge offered Old Quarry, but its one-ended road remained active. Mercy offered an aircraft maintenance trench after clearing fuel and staff.

The foundry had three furnaces, independent rail spurs, and cutters built for ship plate. Its nearest housing stood fourteen kilometers away.

Caleb chose Cairo Foundry Twelve.

Moving him risked carrying the map across the route. Moving the tools to Mercy risked every ward above them.

Soma proposed a sequence of disconnected freight slabs, each released before the next accepted Caleb’s weight. Eight local teams would own one transfer each. No team would know the final destination until its slab arrived.

The map drew all eight slabs under Caleb’s skin as Soma spoke.

"It heard the plan," Caleb said.

The false wall opened wider.

A body stepped through.

It had Hara’s yellow glove for a hand and Sol’s taped tow hook at one shoulder. Pavel’s dry pack formed its chest. Black lane marks filled the spaces between borrowed objects.

Asha Venn’s voice came from its blank head.

"Current route found."

The body drove its narrow leg into Caleb’s open shoulder groove.

Silver closed around it before Elara could pull the room release.

Caleb caught the intruder inside his own chest.

Kestrel’s scanner divided his body map into three load zones. The route body occupied every zone, but two thin cuts could trap its live center in the lower left third.

That third held Caleb’s left leg, half his abdomen, and the supports that kept his chest upright.

"Can we burn only the foreign route?" Tali asked.

Kestrel watched the scan redraw itself.

"No. It has entered current silver. Killing it requires removing all silver in that load zone."

The scale settled at thirty-three point eight percent of Caleb’s current mass.
