Chapter 655 - 626: I Can Save Ying’er
He held Wan Xian’Er tightly, so tightly in his arms, his heart aching for her. ’What kind of woman is she? Even now, she’s still taking all the blame on herself! The root of all these mistakes is clearly me. If that accident hadn’t happened that day, if Xian’Er hadn’t been by my side, none of this would have occurred. There would be no Ying’Er, no heart-wrenching longing, and no self-recrimination for not taking good care of her!’
’How he longed to tell her right now that it wasn’t her fault Ying’Er was like this! It was his! That he could save Ying’Er! That Ying’Er wouldn’t have to suffer anymore! That she would be with them always! But he couldn’t!’
He knew that if he didn’t let Xian’Er cry out all her stress and pain, it would fester inside her, becoming a permanent weight on her heart. Xian’Er would never return to being the innocent Spirit Fairy she once was; this affliction might even affect her for the rest of her life. That wasn’t what he wanted. If things really turned out that way, he would blame himself forever.
Wan Xian’Er cried for a full hour before she gradually fell silent. Seemingly exhausted, she sank into a deep sleep once more. This time, Mu Chen did not fall asleep with her. He simply watched over her, afraid she might have nightmares, afraid his gaze wouldn’t be the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes.
At midnight, Wan Xian’Er awoke again. The moment she did, her eyes met Mu Chen’s. Her expression was visibly more relaxed than before. He gently wiped the tear tracks from her face and said softly, "You’re awake?"
Wan Xian’Er nodded lightly. Recalling how she had lost her composure, she said to Mu Chen with some embarrassment, "I must have looked awful just now, huh?"
Mu Chen shook his head. "Xian’Er is beautiful no matter what."
"Why?" Wan Xian’Er asked, smiling with delight.
Mu Chen smiled. "Because you are my wife."
"Hmph, that’s just a roundabout way of complimenting yourself."
Mu Chen gave a noncommittal smile and pulled the blanket over Wan Xian’Er’s exposed shoulder. "Don’t you have anything you want to ask me?"
Wan Xian’Er said, "I have many questions, but I know you’ll tell me everything."
Mu Chen chuckled and nodded. "Yes, I’ll tell you everything. Everything about me."
As he spoke, Mu Chen began to recount everything that had happened in the three years since they parted ways in the Netherworld Purgatory. He told her how he had advanced his Martial Arts Realm through the Tower of Calamity, how he had represented the Xuanling Empire in its grand tournament, and how he had earned the right to enter Holy Tomb Mountain. He went on to describe passing the grueling assessment to enter the Inner Mountain, where he trained in Cultivation for a year and a half. He explained his journey to the Central State, how he met Xiao Ying’er, and how he ultimately participated in the marital contest where he finally saw Wan Xian’Er again. Mu Chen spoke in such great detail that by the time he finished narrating his three-year journey, his voice had grown hoarse.
The more Wan Xian’Er listened, the more shocked she became. She felt happy for him when he spoke of rapidly advancing his Martial Arts Realm after clearing the trials of the Tower of Calamity. Her heart ached for him when he described being beaten half to death by Nishan Brom, nearly losing his life. She swelled with pride when he told her he had become a student of Dilaka and Feng Chaoming. This was what it meant to be a partner. Her heart mirrored his every joy and sorrow, responding to his every deed. This was a lover.
"So, you’re saying there are two other sisters who came before me?" To his surprise, Wan Xian’Er didn’t have a strong reaction when Mu Chen mentioned Mu Bingling and Xuan Moqing. Instead, her face filled with worry as she asked, "Do they know about me?"
Mu Chen nodded. "Bing’Er knows."
Hearing this, Wan Xian’Er grew even more anxious. Her gaze darted around as she asked, "Will... Will Sister Bing’Er hold it against me? Or be hostile toward me?"
A pang went through Mu Chen’s heart. "What are you thinking? Why would Bing’Er hold anything against you? She may seem cold to others, but she’s incredibly caring toward people she’s close to. I told her all about you when I returned to the Xuanling Empire. Do you know what she said?"
"What did she say?"
Wan Xian’Er seemed to place immense importance on Mu Bingling’s words, asking her question the very instant Mu Chen finished his. Mu Chen gently stroked her hair and smiled. "She said that since the accident had already happened, I had to take responsibility. You were the one who was hurt, after all, and the man she has her eyes on can’t be someone who shirks his duties. Therefore, she said I absolutely had to find you and make it up to you."
Wan Xian’Er said with a look of disbelief, "Did Sister Bing’Er really say that?"
Mu Chen nodded. "You know I wouldn’t lie to you."
Taking a deep breath, the tension in Wan Xian’Er’s heart finally eased. She said, a hint of sadness in her voice, "Even if Sister Bing’Er doesn’t blame me, I can’t help but feel I’ve wronged her. After all, I’ve taken a large part of the love you should have given her."
Mu Chen gave a bitter smile. "Silly Xian’Er, it’s not your fault. You can only blame me for not being a good man. I don’t know if all of you have bad taste or what. There are so many excellent men out there, yet you all had to fall for a scoundrel like me."
"Heh..." Wan Xian’Er’s eyes crinkled into a smile. "Actually, when I think about it, you aren’t a bad man at all. You’re just so exceptional that we all ended up falling hopelessly in love with you. It’s destiny. If you, Mu Chen, have other partners in the future, I won’t be surprised, nor will I object. But anyone who becomes your partner must be worthy of you."
Mu Chen was left speechless.
He was at a loss for words, because she wasn’t the first woman to say such a thing to him. It seemed that every woman who loved him had said something similar. ’But... am I really worthy of it?’
"Mu Chen."
"Hm?"
"In these past three years, have any other women fallen for you?"
Startled by her sudden question, the faces of Chu Aoqing and Mu Junwu flashed through Mu Chen’s mind. He gave an awkward grin. "I guess you could say that."
Wan Xian’Er pouted and let out a soft "hmph" but said nothing more, changing the subject instead. "Mu Chen."
"I’m here."
"I want to go back to the Xuanling Empire with you."
"Alright. Huh?" It took a moment for Mu Chen’s mind to catch up to his ears. When it did, he exclaimed, "What did you say?!"
Wan Xian’Er spoke with the utmost gravity. "I want to return to the Xuanling Empire with you. Ying’Er has less than two months to live. If we use the Ding Palace’s spatial tunnel, we should be able to reach the Xuanling Empire within a month. I can’t let her grandparents miss their last chance to see her. Ying’Er is a descendant of the Mu Family; she should spend her final days with them."
Mu Chen’s expression suddenly softened. He could no longer hold back the tears stinging his eyes, and they streamed down his face. He pulled Wan Xian’Er into a tight embrace, his voice choked with emotion. "What have I ever done to deserve you?"
Wan Xian’Er’s gaze grew incredibly gentle. She buried her face in Mu Chen’s chest and said softly, "It’s all destiny."
"Yes, it’s all destiny." Mu Chen took a deep breath, wiped away his tears, and gently pushed Wan Xian’Er back a little so he could look at her. He said seriously, "Xian’Er, I have to tell you something. But first, you have to promise me you won’t get too emotional."
Mu Chen’s warning only made Wan Xian’Er more nervous. "What is it?" she asked.
"I can save Ying’Er."
