Chapter 62: Forgotten City: The Shore [2]
Without hesitation, all the ghouls ran towards Aegon with lust for his blood. The darkness surrounding them which didn’t allow light to pass suddenly vanished and their bodies started coming into view.
Most of them ran with four limbs looking like normal animals like Jaguars and tigers, but some ran on two legs and sometimes used their hands for support.
These were the ones who looked like monkeys, having human-like appearances but still needed their full four limbs for support.
All these ghouls were the first round and all had ’normal’ forms like that of humans and regular animals.
However, there were others whose appearances were enough to put fear in a person’s heart.
The second round of ghouls was a tall scary creature that looks like a person made entirely out of old bones and dry, stringy skin.
It has a very long thin body with ribs sticking out and arms that reach all the way to the ground. Its skin, a muddy brown color and had long sharp claws on its fingers and toes.
Its face is the most frightening part, featuring a huge, wide-open mouth filled with sharp teeth and no eyes to speak of, but was ready to jump at the moment it reached its meal.
Everything about this ghoul seems to be made of death as it carried with it a tall staff made of bone and hair that has more skulls attached to it.
There were more of these ghouls than one could count and there weren’t even the most terrifying monsters of them all.
The third wave of the ghouls were a unique breed of monsters outside the natural sense of reasoning.
This creature is a powerful beast with a mix of a wolf and a lizard. It has a thick, muscular body covered in dark, bumpy skin that looks as hard as a rock.
Along its back, it has a row of sharp, black spikes that point towards its tail.
Its face is covered in a pale bone-colored plate, with its glowing red eyes that shines through the dark. Its mouth on the other hand is wide open showing off rows of long, sharp teeth made for tearing flesh apart.
The monster stands on the ground on four strong legs, ending in large paws with heavy black claws.
There were more of these monsters; its own kind behind it, suggesting that they hunt together in a pack, but nevertheless all the monsters here all moved in a massive number.
With its tough skin and mean look, this particular wolf-lizard monster seems like a very dangerous hunter that nothing could easily stop.
As these monsters ran towards Aegon, he stood unfazed, his expression calm which gave these monsters more reason to attack him.
Although he had a calm expression, his eyes showed otherwise. There were fierce and piercings with purple and black lights.
He had mana, enough to go against these monsters so there was nothing for him to be worried about.
He gazed down to his system, and looked at his status, where his abilities were displayed and thought in his heart.
’Hm... I haven’t used this one yet, let’s try and see what it can do.’
At that moment, the monsters were already a few meters away from him, some further than most, but very close.
Then the words left his lips.
"Absolute Deflection Field!"
As he said this, suddenly, he was surrounded by a transparent mult-layered, constantly shifting bubble of warped space.
Just as the ability was activated the monsters all reached him and tried to hit him, yet they couldn’t.
The constantly shifting bubbles bounced them all back sending most of them flying away.
However, that didn’t stop them all, there were over a thousand monsters rushing towards Aegon and as they were getting hit away, more were coming.
"Hm. This is good, very protective."
Aegon admired the way the space around him had been made as a barrier stopping the monsters from reaching his body.
The barrier was very strong; that, as they crashed on it, instead of him falling, they were the ones who were sent flying.
However, this wasn’t only what was happening. Most of the ghouls which had humanoid form used their fist to punch the barrier but was instantly teleported into the ground.
It was as if the space between them and Aegon was intertwined. If an attack touches the space, it would not just be diverted but re-routed to another place.
While this was going on, Aegon saw what was happening and was safe with his barrier, no harm could come to him.
However, while this monster couldn’t find a way to penetrate the barrier with their punches and scratches, there was a certain group of monsters that stayed and watched.
They were floating.
These were shadowy creatures of the dark, their body looking like clouds, light in weight, but black in color.
They had a hoodie-like appearance over their head making their faces disappear in the darkness and can’t be seen.
In their hands, they held a strange staff that had the head of a lion. Floating in the air, like watchers, they saw the barrier in which covered Aegon and stretched out their staff.
They were dressed like mages and were about five in number. As they stretched out the staff, flames of different colors were fired, flying down to the barrier.
However, as it entered the field of the barrier, it was re-routed and dissipated into nothing.
"Hmph."
Aegon looked up and saw where that attack had just come from and had a slight smile on his face.
’They are flying?’
"Another race of monsters? Are they even ghouls?"
The concept of ghouls are supposed to be mythical creatures that feed on both the living and the dead, but these flying monsters are something else entirely.
They don’t seem to be rushing in for a bite, but instead continue trying to use their flames to destroy Aegon’s barrier.
"The first wave were more of humans and animals newly turned ghouls that’s why they still had their initial form."
Aegon placed his head down and looked at the monsters who were trying to penetrate into his barrier, while saying this.
"But the second wave; they looked like already evolved ghouls. The main form of a ghoul, the same with the third wave."
He raised his head up and looked at the floating monsters.
"However, these ones don’t look like ghouls at all. They are more like mages, monster mages."
’They must have intelligence seeing how they are specifically at a distance and striking.’
"Hmph."
He placed his head down and looked at a monster rushing to him but it got fired away, while the other attacks were re-routed to another place.
"This is good, but I can’t stay here forever. I have to keep moving to that castle."
He was inside the bubbles which covered him, but it was difficult for him to move. The bubbles were rough and stayed on the ground like it was fixed.
This was a problem for him. If he wanted to move it wasn’t going to be possible as he couldn’t move a fixed round barrier.
At this moment, he looked at the system and noticed his mana had barely reduced since his last fight.
"If I can use the basic form and twist a little bit..."
Aegon cancelled the dagger and placed his hand on the barrier and began absorbing the mana that was coming from it, and just then the size of the barrier started reducing bit by bit.
The monster saw this and even the mages had to stop firing their flames which wasn’t causing any damage; and they watched.
The goal was to make the barrier fitting for him to walk while it was still activated, so he tried to absorb the mana in it to reduce it.
At this point, the barrier reduced faster and the monster had thought it was going to burst and they would be able to evade it, but that wasn’t the case.
"Wow!"
Aegon was surprised to see the result of the absorption.
The barrier had not only reduced but had surrounded him like he was wearing it as a cloth; every inch of his body was covered with the barrier like an armor suit, fitting his body perfectly.
"Let’s have some fun..."
Saying this, Aegon smiled and materialized the dagger in his hand, then he dashed towards monsters and started killing them one after the other.
