It’s said that breakthrough is split into three categories: Body, Spirit, Soul.

The body refers to the physical body being healthy and having full vitality. This is the easiest stage – as long as you have no great injury and are no older than 60, you will directly pass this test. Though it’s also the most cruel stage. If you’re even a single year older, your chances will be lowered by 10%, and it’s a continuous process. By 70 or 80, the chance is already far into the minus.

Though while it’s the easiest stage, it doesn’t add much to the chance of breakthrough – a normal body will ensure a 30% chance of breakthrough. Through Body Refining Techniques one can refine the body and reach greater heights.

Spirit refers to the Spiritual Power and dantian. A cultivator needs to absorb enough spiritual power during the breakthrough process – Spiritual Roots here decide how much a cultivator can absorb. Mysterious Roots give too little spiritual power, leading to a 10% chance, which might as well be nothing. Prosperous Roots are the average requirement, giving a whole 30%, which is already what most cultivators consider the peak of what they can get from this stage.

Finally, there is the Soul. The soul is complex and measuring it through outside matters can cause harm, so the easiest way to understand its strength is to observe the spiritual sense.

A Foundation Building cultivator has a spiritual sense of at least 1,000 metres. Reaching 10 metres as a Qi Refining cultivator is the lowest added chance of 10%. Without this 10% one will have a guaranteed failure, while 10% means that as long as the other two stages do well enough, one might still pass the third stage.

Reaching 100 metres adds a chance of 30% - directly reaching the line at which most cultivators would dare to break through!

"30% from the body, 30% from the spirit and 30% from the soul, then taking a low-quality Foundation Building Pill will add at least 10% and ensure that one doesn’t die from failure.
