Chapter 472 - 481: Finding the Corpse
The thumping sound seemed to carry a strange power. At the same instant, the old man and the female ghost both snapped their heads toward the phone. They froze for a moment before returning to normal.
[Whoa, that has to be a coincidence, right? Is the streamer really that amazing?]
[She can affect a ghost just by tapping her fingers?]
[Pfft, it’s definitely a coincidence. If she was really that powerful, she would’ve done something sooner. Why wait until now to put on a show?]
The old man’s arms and legs trembled as he turned to run, but the female ghost’s hair seemed to stretch out infinitely. It whipped forward frantically and instantly coiled around his neck.
It hoisted the scrawny old man into the air and started swinging him around, making him wail uncontrollably.
The female ghost, who had been silent until now, finally spoke. "My body! Give me back my body!"
The old man could only scream at the top of his lungs. The female ghost’s hair tightened, leaving him dangling in mid-air, struggling to breathe.
His face turned beet red, and he could only look toward Su Nian for help.
Su Nian lifted her chin slightly, her fingers tapping the table rhythmically once more.
This time, the sound was loud, and the female ghost’s hair, which was coiled around the old man’s neck, loosened its grip.
Realizing he had been saved, the old man scrambled and crawled toward the phone screen.
"Master, Master, what do I do?"
"It’s trying to kill me! It’s a ghost! I know I was wrong. I should have listened to you, but what do I do now? I don’t want to die!"
[Damn, she’s the real deal! She can fend off a ghost just by tapping her fingers!]
[So cool! How many people can pull off a move like that?]
[You guys don’t know, but the streamer is someone even the president of the Taoist Association looks up to.]
Snot and tears streamed down the old man’s face. He was an absolute mess as he gaped at the phone, pleading with Su Nian.
The female ghost caught up from behind, still chanting, "Give me back my body... My body..."
Su Nian understood the female ghost’s problem with a single glance.
Although the ghost had all four limbs and appeared whole, her physical remains had actually been sealed, trapping her by this lake forever.
Now, having run into this unlucky soul, she had latched onto him, desperately insisting that he find her remains.
"Shut up!"
Su Nian narrowed her eyes, looking up with a hint of impatience.
The female ghost froze. It took her a moment to realize—’Why should I listen to her?’
But then she saw Su Nian’s cold expression and deep, haunting eyes on the phone screen, and she suddenly didn’t dare to act out.
Su Nian looked at the old man. "You and she are connected by fate. This is a trial you are destined to face. You have to help her find her body."
"No way! I’m scared!"
Su Nian continued, "Her body is gone. She’s trapped by this water and can’t leave. Right now, you’re the only one who can help her."
The old man’s first instinct was to refuse. Finding a corpse for a ghost—it was an absurd and outrageous thing to be asked to do.
But the next second, he heard Su Nian say, "You can think it over. But if you refuse, she’ll haunt you endlessly... or take you as her replacement."
The old man silently swallowed his refusal and asked cautiously, "Where am I supposed to look?"
"To the southeast. In the earth."
Su Nian’s instructions were simple, and the old man understood them, but he was still worried.
But after sneaking a peek at the uncharacteristically calm ghost behind him, he didn’t dare protest further.
’What if she goes berserk again and strangles me with her hair?’
Now, with a glimmer of hope for survival, the old man had no choice but to search for the female ghost’s remains, trembling with fear all the while.
Holding his phone up, the old man followed the path downstream until he reached a hollow. A stream cut through the village, pooling into a lake at its lowest point.
Fortunately, the lake wasn’t large. People said someone had once leased it for fish farming, but the business had failed for some unknown reason. ’Thinking back,’ the old man realized, ’it was probably because of this female ghost.’
But because no one had disturbed it, the lake’s water had always remained pristine.
Following Su Nian’s instructions that the female ghost’s remains were in the earth, the old man proceeded cautiously with his phone held high. He carried a branch, which he used to poke and scrape at the soil from time to time.
Near a bend at the lake’s inlet, the body had somehow avoided being washed away by the current and was still buried in the soil—perhaps buffered by the terrain, or for some other reason.
After searching for a long time along the lake’s edge, the old man’s branch finally hit something hard. He carefully scraped away the soil and, sure enough, uncovered a long, white bone. It looked like a leg bone, and amazingly, it hadn’t been washed into the lake either.
He couldn’t find any other parts.
In truth, it was a difficult spot to search. The water was deeper here, reducing visibility. Worse, a small, water-eroded cave blocked the view, making it look pitch-black inside.
