Chapter 253: Assassin’s Pursuit
Andrey’s Ki senses flared—a sudden, sharp pressure, like a blade pressing against the back of his neck. He grabbed Morgana’s arm and yanked her sideways just as a streak of silver light carved through the space where they had been standing.
The impact was deafening.
The ground where they had stood a moment ago exploded inward, a deep crater cracking the asphalt, sending jagged shards of stone and dust erupting into the night air. The shockwave rippled outward, forcing Andrey to brace himself, his boots skidding across the uneven ground.
Andrey’s eyes widened. His internal thought surfaced: ’What the hell... what kind of power is that?’
From the settling dust, a figure emerged. He walked with an unhurried, almost casual gait, his hands in his pockets, his purple hair catching the faint glow of the distant streetlights. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, unwrinkled despite the chaos, and his sharp features were set in a calm, amused expression.
He surveyed the crater where his attack had struck, then let his gaze drift to the two figures who had barely escaped it. A faint, curious smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
"Oh? So you’re the thieves who managed to slip past Klauster’s guards." He tilted his head slightly, his voice smooth and unhurried, carrying a hint of genuine curiosity. "I have to admit, I expected more of a challenge from the people who caused such a stir. But it seems you’re just running, aren’t you? A bit slow on the uptake, if I’m being honest."
Andrey’s hand hovered near his weapon, but his gaze remained locked on Guile, his Ki senses screaming warnings. ’He’s faster than I anticipated. And that attack wasn’t just brute force. There’s a precision to it that suggests he’s done this before. Many times.’
Guile studied them for a moment longer, his gray eyes gleaming with faint interest. Then he let out a soft, almost disappointed sigh.
"Now then," he said, his tone shifting to something more businesslike, "let’s keep this simple. You have something that doesn’t belong to you. I’m going to take it back." He paused, allowing his smile to widen just slightly. "You can either hand it over quietly... or we can do this the hard way."
Andrey’s voice was calm, steady. "I don’t plan on handing anything over."
Guile’s smile sharpened. "I was hoping you’d say that."
Before Andrey could react, Guile moved.
The distance between them vanished in an instant. Andrey barely had time to raise his arm before Guile’s palm slammed into his chest, sending him hurtling backward. He crashed through a stack of wooden pallets, splinters flying, his body skidding across the ground before he managed to stop himself.
The air was knocked from his lungs. He pushed himself up, his vision swimming, his ribs aching.
Guile examined his own hand with a faint, almost bored expression, as if evaluating the quality of the impact. "Hmm. You’re tougher than you look. But that won’t save you."
Morgana lunged before he could finish, violet energy crackling around her claws as she aimed for his throat. Guile sidestepped with fluid, effortless grace, his movements carrying the languid ease of a dancer. He caught her wrist, twisted, and sent her crashing into a nearby wall.
The impact cracked the brick, and Morgana crumpled to the ground, a low growl of pain escaping her.
Guile dusted off his sleeve with measured precision, his voice calm and casual. "That was disappointing."
Andrey’s mind raced as he pushed himself upright. ’He’s toying with us. He’s faster, stronger, more experienced. If we try to fight him head-on, we won’t stand a chance. I need to create an opening.’
His hand brushed against the white-and-gold pistol at his belt. ’I’ll buy us enough time to retreat. Once we’re in the tunnels, we can lose him in the dark. But I need to slow him down first.’
Guile’s gaze flicked to him, a faint, curious smile tugging at his lips. "Still standing? You really are persistent." His voice dropped, smooth and unhurried. "I’ll give you credit for that. But persistence won’t save you from what’s coming."
Andrey’s voice was steady, calm. "Maybe not. But it’ll buy me enough time to do this."
He raised his pistol and fired.
The shot was precise, aimed at Guile’s chest. But Guile simply tilted his head, the bullet passing harmlessly past his ear, his expression unchanged.
"Not bad," Guile murmured, his eyes gleaming with faint amusement.
Andrey’s response came without hesitation—he changed his aim, firing at the ground beneath Guile’s feet. The asphalt shattered, and Guile’s footing shifted. It was only a fraction of a second, but it was enough.
Andrey activated Phantom Step.
He reappeared beside Morgana, his hand closing around her arm. "Now!"
They vanished into the shadows, their footsteps echoing off the narrow walls as they disappeared into the darkness of the maintenance tunnel.
Guile stood at the entrance of the tunnel, his gray eyes fixed on the darkness where they had vanished. A slow, appreciative smile spread across his face as he let out a soft, almost amused chuckle.
"Interesting," he murmured to himself, his voice carrying a hint of genuine enjoyment. "I haven’t had a chase this entertaining in a long time."
He stepped forward, his figure dissolving into the shadows as he followed them into the depths below.
Morgana’s breath came in short, controlled bursts as they sprinted through the narrow maintenance tunnel, the distant echoes of their footsteps bouncing off the damp brick walls. Her voice was low, urgent.
"Master, should I use my Magical Girl powers? It might give us an edge—"
"No," Andrey cut her off, his voice firm despite the exertion. "If you transform, the mana signature will be unmistakable. They’ll track us instantly. We need to stay hidden."
He glanced at her, his eyes sharp behind his glasses. "How long can your illusion hold?"
Morgana’s jaw tightened as she focused, maintaining the shimmering veil around them. "At most, thirty minutes. After that, it will start to fade."
Andrey’s mind raced, calculating. "We’ve been using it for eighteen minutes already. That leaves us twelve minutes before we’re completely exposed."
Morgana’s red eyes flickered with frustration. "Then we need to lose this assassin before time runs out."
