My Magical Girl System

Chapter 254: Echo Shroud

Andrey’s hand moved to his inventory, and a small, ornate box materialized in his palm. Its surface was dark violet, etched with silver runes that pulsed faintly with a soft, rhythmic light, like a heartbeat captured in metal. A quiet hum emanated from within, barely audible but carrying a weight of latent power.

"This is the Echo Shroud," Andrey said, his voice low and steady. "It’s a one-use device that releases a concentrated wave of high-frequency energy—disorienting, destabilizing. It won’t harm him, but it will freeze his movements for a few critical seconds. Long enough for us to escape."

Morgana studied the box, her red eyes tracing the runes. "Where did you get something like this?"

"Let’s just say I’ve been preparing for situations like this," Andrey replied, tucking the box back into his inventory. "I’ll lure him into the maintenance shaft near the old pump station. The acoustics there will amplify the Echo Shroud’s effect. You’ll need to be in position to trigger it."

Morgana’s lips curved into a slow, approving smile. "You really do think of everything, don’t you, Master?"

Andrey allowed himself a small, tired smile. "I try to."

The maintenance shaft was narrow, its walls lined with rusted pipes and ancient machinery. The air was thick with the smell of damp metal and stagnant water, and the only light came from a single flickering bulb at the far end. The shadows clung to the corners like living things, deep and impenetrable.

Andrey stopped at the edge of the shaft, his gaze fixed on the darkness ahead. He could feel Guile’s presence closing in, a cold, predatory weight pressing against the edges of his Ki senses.

Morgana slipped into the shadows, her form blending seamlessly with the darkness. Her voice was barely a whisper as she moved into position. "I’m ready."

Andrey’s gaze swept the shaft one last time, noting the angles, the shadows, the narrow confines that would make escape difficult but would also limit Guile’s mobility. The Echo Shroud would work best in a confined space—its frequency would rebound off the walls, creating a disorienting feedback loop that would momentarily freeze anyone caught in its radius.

He just had to make sure Guile was inside when it triggered.

He stepped into the shaft, his footsteps echoing off the rusted pipes as he moved to the center of the room. He stopped, turning to face the entrance.

"Alright," he said, his voice carrying through the stillness. "Let’s do this!"

Guile appeared in the shaft’s entrance, his silhouette framed by the dim light of the corridor beyond. He moved with unhurried, deliberate grace, his hands in his pockets, his expression calm and amused.

He studied Andrey for a moment, his head tilting slightly. "You know, most people would have kept running. But you stopped. That’s either very brave... or very foolish."

Andrey met his gaze, his voice calm. "I prefer to think of it as calculated."

Guile’s smile widened, a hint of genuine amusement flickering in his gray eyes. "Calculated? Is that what you call leading me into a dead-end maintenance shaft? A bit cliché, don’t you think?"

Andrey’s hand rested on the Echo Shroud at his belt. "You’d be surprised what you can learn in a place like this."

Guile took a step forward, his hand brushing against the hilt of one of his concealed blades. "Let’s see if your calculation holds up, then."

Andrey didn’t hesitate. He pressed the Echo Shroud’s activation rune, and a wave of high-frequency energy erupted from the box—invisible, silent, but devastating. Guile’s body froze mid-step, his muscles locking, his eyes widening in momentary confusion.

Andrey moved.

He sprinted past Guile, his footsteps echoing off the narrow walls, his hand extended toward the exit. Morgana materialized from the shadows beside him, her hand closing around his arm as they burst into the corridor beyond.

The wave of energy faded as quickly as it had come, and Guile’s body shuddered back to life. He let out a low, surprised breath, shaking off the lingering disorientation. His gaze tracked the empty shaft, then the corridor where they had vanished.

A slow, appreciative smile spread across his face.

"Well played," he murmured, his voice carrying a hint of genuine respect. "But you’re not going to get far."

Andrey could feel Guile’s presence coiling around them, patient and predatory—a hunter who knew his prey had nowhere left to run.

But Andrey had already made his move.

Morgana’s hands trembled as she released the final thread of her illusion. The air around them shimmered, and the narrow maintenance corridor seemed to fold in on itself—a layer of distorted light and shadow that wrapped around them like a second skin. The sounds of their footsteps, their breathing, even the faint rustle of their clothes were swallowed by the veil.

She staggered, her legs buckling beneath her. Andrey caught her before she could fall, his arm sliding around her waist, pulling her against his side. Her breathing was ragged, her body trembling with the effort of maintaining the spell.

"Good work," Andrey said, his voice low and steady despite the tension coiling in his chest. "You bought us time."

Morgana’s voice was weak, strained. "It won’t hold forever... he’s too sharp..."

"Then we make the most of it."

A sharp, metallic shing echoed from behind them—the sound of a blade cutting through air, followed by the shattering of stone. The illusion rippled, a crack forming in its surface as Guile’s attack carved through the space where they had been standing moments ago.

Andrey didn’t hesitate. He activated Overdrive.

Power surged through his body, his muscles burning as his hair shifted from brown to white. The world around him sharpened, every detail snapping into focus—the cracks in the walls, the distant hum of the city above, the faint pulse of Guile’s presence closing in.

He tightened his grip on Morgana and ran.

The city blurred past them—narrow alleys, dark rooftops, the sprawling maze of the eastern district. Andrey moved like a shadow, his footsteps barely touching the ground as he weaved through the labyrinth of streets and passages. His body burned with the strain of Overdrive, but he pushed forward, each step carrying them further from the danger.

Behind them, the sounds of pursuit grew fainter, swallowed by the distance.

When the last traces of Overdrive began to fade, Andrey slowed, his breathing ragged, his muscles screaming in protest. He ducked into a narrow alcove between two crumbling buildings, lowering Morgana gently to the ground.

She leaned against the wall, her chest heaving, her red eyes searching his face. "Did we... lose him?"

Andrey’s gaze swept the street, his Ki senses stretching outward. The weight of Guile’s presence was gone—faint echoes, fading into the distance.

"For now," he said, his voice hoarse. "But he’s not going to give up that easily."

Morgana let out a shaky breath, a faint, exhausted smile crossing her lips. "Then we keep moving."

Andrey looked down at her, his own exhaustion pressing against the edges of his consciousness. "Can you stand?"

Morgana pushed herself upright, her legs unsteady but holding. "I’ll manage."

Andrey nodded. He reached into his inventory and pulled out the small, silver tracking device he had prepared for situations like this. He pressed a button on its side, and it emitted a faint, high-pitched pulse.

"I sent a message to Sarah," he said, his voice calm despite the exhaustion in his body. "She’s on her way with the van. We’ll meet them at the rendezvous point in ten minutes."

Morgana’s eyes flickered with relief. "That’s good. I don’t think I can keep running much longer."

Andrey looked at her, his expression softening. "You did well tonight, Morgana."

Morgana’s lips curved into a faint, tired smile. "I had a good master."

They slipped back into the shadows, their footsteps fading into the night as they disappeared into the city.
