Chapter 238: Ursawood Brute
The ground trembled beneath their feet as the roars grew louder, closer. Andrey’s hand tightened on his staff, his Ki senses screaming a warning. He grabbed Lumy’s arm and pulled her forward.
"Run!"
They sprinted through the mist-shrouded forest, their boots pounding against the moss-covered earth. The trees blurred past them, their branches reaching out like grasping claws. Behind them, the heavy footsteps grew louder, faster, closing the distance with terrifying speed.
Andrey’s Ki senses flared. "It’s too fast! We won’t outrun it!"
Lumy’s voice was sharp, breathless. "Then we fight!"
They skidded to a halt in a small clearing, the mist swirling around them. Andrey turned, staff raised, just as a massive shape burst through the treeline.
The creature that emerged was a nightmare of bark and beast. Standing nearly fifteen feet tall, its body was a grotesque fusion of gnarled oak and ursine muscle. Thick, bark-like armor covered its torso and limbs, cracked and glowing with faint green luminescence where moss and ancient runes pulsed. Its eyes burned with a cold, predatory light, and its claws each as long as a dagger left deep furrows in the earth as it stepped into the clearing.
A holographic screen flickered to life in front of Andrey.
[Ursawood Brute – B+ Rank Threat]
The Ursawood Brute let out a thunderous roar, the sound shaking the leaves from the trees around them. Its gaze locked onto Andrey and Lumy, and it charged.
Andrey stepped forward, staff planted firmly. "Lumy, find cover! Aim for the joints and the cracks in its chest!"
Lumy dove behind a moss-covered boulder, her pistol already drawn. "Got it!"
The Brute’s massive claw swept toward Andrey. He ducked, rolling under the strike, and drove the butt of his staff into its knee. The impact was like striking solid stone, but the creature stumbled, its momentum carrying it past him.
"Now, Lumy!"
Lumy fired. Her shot struck the Brute’s shoulder joint, where the bark armor was thinnest. The creature roared in pain, its arm jerking back, but it didn’t fall.
Andrey pressed forward, using his staff to deflect a sweeping claw, then pivoting to strike at the Brute’s exposed side. "Its joints are weaker! Keep hitting them!"
The Ursawood Brute let out another roar, slamming its fist into the ground. A shockwave of earth and moss erupted outward, forcing Andrey and Lumy to brace themselves. The ground beneath them cracked and buckled, making footing treacherous. Andrey stumbled, barely catching himself as the Brute lunged toward him, its massive claws aimed at his chest.
Andrey raised his staff to block, the impact driving him back, his boots carving trenches in the earth. The Brute pressed its weight against him, its strength immense, its jaws snapping inches from his face. He could smell the damp earth and decay on its breath.
"Lumy!" he shouted, his voice strained. "Hit the cracks! Now!"
A shot rang out—sharp, precise, piercing the Brute’s chest through a fissure in its bark armor. The creature let out a pained roar, its grip loosening for a fraction of a second. Andrey twisted, driving his shoulder into its chest and shoving it back.
The Brute staggered, its massive form swaying as dark, viscous sap oozed from the wound. It let out a low, guttural growl, its burning eyes fixed on Lumy.
Andrey’s gaze hardened. He planted his staff and channeled Ki into it, the pale blue glow intensifying. "Ki Pulse!"
A shockwave of energy erupted from his staff, slamming into the Brute’s chest and forcing it back another step. The creature’s balance wavered, its claws scraping the ground as it fought to stay upright.
The Ursawood Brute let out a guttural roar, its massive form trembling as dark, viscous sap oozed from the wounds on its chest and shoulder. The cracks in its bark armor glowed with an eerie green light, and from the surrounding earth, tendrils of root and moss began to snake toward it, wrapping around its legs and torso.
Andrey’s eyes widened. "It’s absorbing the plants! It’s healing itself!"
Lumy fired again, her bullet striking the Brute’s shoulder, but the wound sealed almost instantly, the bark knitting together as the creature drew energy from the forest around it. "It’s no use! My shots aren’t doing anything!"
Andrey channeled Ki into his staff and struck the Brute’s leg, but the impact was like hitting solid stone. The creature barely flinched. Instead, it let out a deafening roar that shook the trees, and the ground around them began to writhe.
Vines shot up from the earth, thick and thorned, lashing toward them. Roots burst through the soil, reaching for their ankles. The entire forest seemed to come alive, turning against them.
"Lumy! Fall back!" Andrey shouted, deflecting a vine with his staff.
Lumy fired at the roots snaking toward her feet, but more kept coming. "There’s too many! We can’t hold this position!"
The Brute lunged, its massive claws swinging in a wide arc. Andrey dove, rolling to the side, but a vine caught his ankle, yanking him off balance. He hit the ground hard, the breath driven from his lungs.
"Gugh—!"
The Brute loomed over him, its burning eyes fixed on its prey, its claws raised for the killing blow.
Andrey’s mind raced. The Brute was feeding on the forest’s energy, drawing power from every plant, every root, every patch of moss. Staying here meant fighting an enemy that could heal faster than they could hurt it.
He pushed himself up, his gaze locking onto Lumy. "Lumy! We can’t win this fight here! The forest is its weapon!"
Lumy’s eyes widened. "What do we—"
Andrey was already moving. He crossed the clearing in a sprint, scooping Lumy into his arms in one fluid motion. She let out a sharp gasp, her body stiffening in surprise.
"Wha—Andrey! Put me down!" she protested, her cheeks flushing red.
"We need to draw it away from the trees!" Andrey said, already running toward the edge of the clearing. "If we can get it into an open area, it won’t be able to heal!"
Lumy’s protests died in her throat as she looked past Andrey’s shoulder. The Brute was already pursuing them, its massive form crashing through the underbrush, vines and roots trailing behind it like living tendrils. The forest was its ally, and it was using every inch of it.
Andrey’s grip tightened around Lumy as he pushed through the dense undergrowth, his boots finding purchase on the uneven ground. "Hold on!"
The Brute let out a thunderous roar, and the trees around them groaned in response. A thick root burst from the earth ahead, blocking their path. Andrey veered left, barely avoiding it, but another root shot up on his right, forcing him to slow.
"Lumy, cover us!" Andrey shouted, his voice tight with exertion. "Aim for its joints! Slow it down!"
Lumy didn’t hesitate. She raised her pistol over Andrey’s shoulder and fired, the shot striking the Brute’s knee joint. The creature stumbled, its stride faltering for just a moment. Andrey used the opening, pushing harder, his legs burning as he put distance between them and the enraged Brute.
But the forest was relentless. Vines lashed at his ankles, roots clawed at his heels, and the Brute’s roars grew louder, closer. Andrey’s heart pounded in his chest, his breath coming in sharp, ragged gasps.
