My Magical Girl System

Chapter 237: The Roar in the Mist

The mist-shrouded forest thickened as Andrey and Lumy pressed deeper into the gate. The air grew cooler, carrying a faint, musky scent that didn’t belong to the trees or the damp earth.

Andrey’s hand tightened on his staff. He slowed his pace, his Ki senses extending outward, probing the shadows between the ancient trunks.

"Stop," he said quietly.

Lumy froze beside him, her hand instinctively moving to the pistol holstered at her thigh. "What is it?"

Andrey’s eyes scanned the treeline ahead. A flicker of movement—low to the ground, deliberate. Then another. And another.

"They’re surrounding us," he murmured.

From the mist, shapes began to emerge. They were short, hunched figures with scaled, mottled skin, their bodies covered in crude leather armor and mismatched metal scraps. Their faces were reptilian—snout-like, with sharp, yellowed teeth and beady eyes that gleamed with cunning. Some carried rusted swords, others clutched crude bows with arrows already nocked.

Kobolds.

Andrey shifted his stance, staff held low. "There’s at least a dozen. Maybe more."

Lumy’s hand tightened around her pistol, her eyes fixed on the kobolds emerging from the mist. She glanced at Andrey, a flicker of frustration crossing her face.

"Then I’ll help from here," Lumy said, raising her pistol. "As long as I don’t use my Magical Girl powers, I won’t trigger the reward system, right?"

Andrey nodded, already stepping forward to meet the first wave of kobolds. "That’s correct. But be careful—they have archers. They’ll try to pick you off from a distance."

Lumy’s lips curved into a faint, confident smile. "Don’t worry. I’m an excellent shot."

One of the kobolds let out a guttural hiss, raising its sword. The others echoed the sound, a chorus of chittering aggression.

"Archers," Andrey warned. "Stay low."

The kobolds charged.

Andrey moved first. His staff extended, catching a kobold across the jaw and sending it spinning into the underbrush. He pivoted, sweeping the staff low to trip two more, then drove the butt of the weapon into the chest of a fourth. The creatures were fast but chaotic, their movements driven by instinct rather than coordination.

An arrow whistled past his ear. He ducked, spinning to face the archer, but another arrow was already in the air. He snapped his staff upward, deflecting it with a sharp crack of wood on steel.

"They’re trying to flank us!" Lumy called out.

A shot rang out—sharp, precise. A kobold archer crumpled, its bow clattering to the ground. Lumy’s aim was steady, her movements practiced. She fired again, and another kobold fell.

"They’re focusing on the sound!" Andrey shouted, ducking under a wild swing. "They’ll try to pin you down!"

Lumy ducked behind a moss-covered boulder as three arrows slammed into the tree beside her. She fired twice in quick succession, dropping two more archers. "I noticed!"

Andrey pressed forward, using his staff to create distance between himself and the nearest kobolds. He swept the legs out from under one, then drove the heel of his palm into the face of another. The creatures snarled, regrouping, their earlier chaos giving way to a more focused assault.

An arrow streaked toward Andrey’s exposed side. He twisted, catching it on his staff, and snapped the shaft in two. The motion cost him a moment of balance, and a kobold lunged, its rusted sword swinging for his ribs.

He sidestepped and drove his staff into the creature’s chest. It crumpled, and he used the momentum to spin, sweeping two more off their feet.

Lumy’s pistol cracked again. Another kobold fell, this one clutching its throat.

"They’re targeting you!" Andrey called out, stepping into the path of three charging kobolds. He planted his staff and swung in a wide arc, forcing them back. "I’ll draw them off! Find cover and stay hidden!"

Lumy’s voice was sharp but controlled. "I can handle myself! Just keep them off the high ground!"

Andrey didn’t argue. He moved with deliberate speed, positioning himself between the kobolds and Lumy’s position. The creatures hissed, their attention split between the two threats. Andrey exploited their hesitation, pressing forward with a series of quick, brutal strikes that scattered their formation.

A kobold lunged at his back. He sidestepped and drove his staff into its spine, then turned to meet the next wave. The battle was chaotic, but Andrey’s movements were measured, each motion a deliberate counter to the kobolds’ aggression.

Behind him, Lumy’s pistol continued to crack, each shot finding its mark with practiced precision. The kobolds’ numbers were thinning, but they were not retreating. Their chittering grew more frantic, more desperate.

"We need to break their morale!" Andrey shouted. "Push through the center!"

Lumy rose from behind the boulder, firing twice as she moved. "I’ll cover you!"

Andrey surged forward, his staff a blur of motion. The kobolds’ formation shattered under the pressure, their ranks dissolving into a rout. One by one, they fled into the mist, their chittering fading into the distance.

Andrey stood in the center of the clearing, breathing steadily, his staff still held at the ready. He scanned the treeline, but no more shapes emerged from the mist.

Lumy approached, her pistol lowered but still in hand. Her expression was sharp, her breathing controlled. "That’s all of them."

Andrey allowed himself a small nod. "Good work." He glanced at her, his gaze steady. "You’re a good shot."

Lumy holstered her pistol, her voice flat but carrying a hint of satisfaction. "I told you I could handle myself."

Andrey turned, scanning the path ahead. "Let’s keep moving before they regroup."

Lumy fell into step beside him, her hand resting near her holster as they pushed deeper into the mist-shrouded forest.

Andrey’s Ki senses stretched outward, probing the shadows between the gnarled trunks, when something caught his eye.

He stopped, crouching low, his hand brushing against the trunk of a gnarled oak. Deep gashes marred the bark—three parallel lines, each as thick as his finger, the edges still raw and oozing a faint, pale sap. The wood around the wounds was splintered, as if the tree had been struck with immense force.

Andrey’s expression tightened. He straightened, his gaze following the trail of marks leading deeper into the mist.

Lumy moved beside him, her voice low and wary. "What is it?"

Andrey pointed at the claw marks, his voice calm but edged with caution. "These are fresh. And they’re deep. Whatever made them is larger than those kobolds. Much larger."

Lumy’s hand drifted toward her pistol, her eyes scanning the treeline ahead. "Should we find another way?"

Andrey studied the marks, then the path ahead. The mist hung thicker there, the shadows deeper, more impenetrable. He was about to respond when a sound cut through the stillness.

A low, guttural roar echoed from somewhere ahead. It was deep, resonant, carrying through the trees like the rumble of an approaching storm.

Lumy’s hand froze on her pistol. Her voice dropped to a whisper. "That didn’t sound like a kobold."

Andrey’s hand tightened on his staff. His eyes remained fixed on the path ahead, his voice steady despite the tension coiling in his chest.

"No," he said quietly. "It’s not."

The roar came again, closer this time, followed by the sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps. The ground trembled faintly beneath their feet.

Andrey’s gaze shifted to Lumy. "We need to move."

Lumy nodded, her hand still resting on her pistol as they began to edge backward, their steps careful, deliberate, the mist swallowing their retreat as the roars grew louder behind them.
