Chapter 28 : Chapter 28
Chapter 28. Pighead, Wake Up and Get to Work!
Lying in bed, Zhao Mingyue found herself unable to fall asleep.
That was only natural. After everything that had happened tonight, anyone would have trouble sleeping. The moment she closed her eyes, the ghosts from this building appeared vividly in her mind.
The man with the melted face.
The Headless Old Man who walked upside down.
Those human faces carved into the walls.
And the female corpse—and the Female Ghost—in the bathroom of Room 506.
Not to mention that she was living here.
Not only here, but on the most dangerous fourth floor.
After all, the residents of the fourth and fifth floors were essentially food deliberately prepared by the old landlord for the Female Ghost on the fifth floor. Anyone who lived here would eventually be eaten by her. With bad luck, Zhao Mingyue herself might even be the first victim.
Aside from the uncontrollable images of ghosts filling her mind, Zhao Mingyue also began carefully recalling every detail from the mission.
Thinking about it carefully, she already knew everything she was supposed to know: the Female Ghost’s secret, the corridor’s secret, and the old landlord’s intentions.
However, one thing still confused her.
Why had Lu Liangting, an outsider, appeared here?
Had he come here to complete a mission as well? He looked experienced, which meant it probably was not his first mission. He even had a ghost hidden on his body—though it did not appear to be a particularly strong one.
If he truly was completing missions, then he should also have a black phone.
There was another question.
Was Lu Liangting not supposed to arrive together with Xia Han? Why had she not seen Xia Han at all?
And what exactly were those police officers downstairs investigating? They still had not left.
Among all these mysteries, the thing Zhao Mingyue could not understand the most was Bai Yu’s attitude toward Lu Liangting.
Perhaps it was just her imagination, but she felt that Bai Yu seemed extremely hostile toward him.
Then again, Bai Yu seemed wary of everyone.
Just as Zhao Mingyue finally sat up and opened the black phone, watching the scrolling bullet comments on the screen, someone suddenly knocked on the door to the living room.
She raised her head immediately, her eyes filled with vigilance.
At this hour, someone knocking on the door made her instinctively suspect it might be a ghost.
“Bai Yu, can you see who is outside?”
“The police.”
“The police?!”
Zhao Mingyue blinked in surprise and hurriedly got out of bed. She was still wearing her frog pajamas, and her short hair was slightly messy.
“Coming.”
She turned on the living room lights and looked through the peephole. Sure enough, two police officers were standing outside.
“Hello. We are officers from the Jinjiang District Police Station in Tianchang City. This is my identification. We have a few questions to ask you. Please answer truthfully.”
Two officers stood at the door—a man and a woman. The one speaking to Zhao Mingyue was the female officer. Perhaps because the person who opened the door was a young girl—and a particularly cute one at that—the officer’s expression softened, and her tone became very polite.
Zhao Mingyue nodded gently.
“Yes, go ahead.”
The police had been called by Lu Liangting.
Someone had died here.
Not the Female Ghost on the fifth floor, but his cousin Xia Han.
When Lu Liangting had come down from the fifth floor, he had discovered Xia Han’s corpse on the third floor corridor.
Aside from that, the female corpse on the fifth floor—and any other bodies that might exist in the rooms on that floor—would also need to be handled by professionals.
In other words, the police.
If Xia Han had not died, Lu Liangting would not have called the police so early. He would have waited until at least five in the morning. Calling the police now meant he had left the mission area.
Which meant the mission had failed.
The officers asked several routine questions.
For example, when Zhao Mingyue had moved in, whether she had gone out tonight, and whether she had heard any noises in the corridor.
Zhao Mingyue was not foolish.
She lied.
She said she had not gone out that night. She had heard some noises but had not investigated.
She was certain Lu Liangting would not expose her. If she did not lie now, she would definitely be taken to the police station to make a formal statement. In that case, not only would the mission fail, she would also lose any chance of sleep.
After finishing the questions, the female officer even kindly advised Zhao Mingyue not to go out at night for the next few days.
The gesture left Zhao Mingyue with a good impression of her.
Before the officer left, Zhao Mingyue even asked for her contact information, thinking it might come in handy in the future.
After sending the police away, Zhao Mingyue returned to the bedroom while yawning.
After this brief interruption, sleepiness finally caught up with her.
She crawled under the blankets, said good night to Bai Yu, and quickly fell asleep.
Perhaps the only advantage of living in this building was that in summer, there was no need for air conditioning.
Once night fell, the entire building became chillingly cold.
After Zhao Mingyue fell asleep, Bai Yu looked at the black phone on the table.
Lines of bullet comments continued to scroll across the screen.
These were the “audience.”
Bai Yu did not know who the audience was or which world they came from.
They could not influence anything. They only appeared when missions began, and their viewing perspective was fixed on the black phone.
When Zhao Mingyue had been bathing earlier, the phone had been left outside, so there was no need to worry about the audience seeing what was happening in the bathroom.
Bai Yu glanced at the screen casually. After confirming that there was nothing particularly useful, she sat beside Zhao Mingyue’s bed and rested her chin on her hand.
Although the audience’s bizarre comments occasionally contained useful information, Bai Yu was currently thinking about something else.
After midnight, it would be the weekend.
Which meant that after daybreak, school would begin again.
Zhao Mingyue and Lu Liangting attended the same high school.
More importantly, those lunatics who had been transformed into beautiful girls were very likely also inside that school.
They might be students.
They might be teachers.
They might even be staff members.
Tonight’s mission had honestly not been very difficult.
With Bai Yu there, Zhao Mingyue would never be in danger.
But school was different.
There were too many restrictions.
She was a ghost. If she appeared during the daytime, her strength would be weakened by more than fifty percent.
“I will make sure you survive.”
Bai Yu glanced back at Zhao Mingyue, who was sleeping soundly. She gently pulled the blanket higher to cover Zhao Mingyue’s shoulders.
She murmured those words softly.
Not long after, Zhao Mingyue began muttering in her sleep.
“Bai… Bai Yu… this dress looks nice too… hurry and try it on… um… we should sleep together again tonight…”
A silly smile appeared on her face as she hugged the blanket tightly.
Bai Yu could only sigh helplessly.
·
·
“Ah… let me sleep a little longer…”
Twenty minutes earlier, Zhao Mingyue had said those exact words while turning off her alarm clock.
And during those twenty minutes, she had clearly fallen asleep again.
Bai Yu stood beside the bed and placed one hand on Zhao Mingyue’s neck.
In less than half a second, Zhao Mingyue’s eyes snapped open.
“Brr… that is cold.”
“Miss Zhao Mingyue, the current time is six fifty-eight in the morning.”
Bai Yu kindly reminded her.
She could already imagine Zhao Mingyue’s reaction if she woke up any later.
She would regret it for the entire day and then glare resentfully at Bai Yu, as if silently asking:
Bai Yu, why did you not wake me up this morning?
