Chapter 29 : Chapter 29
Chapter 29. What Exactly Is Wrong With Me
Zhao Mingyue rushed out of bed in a panic. She hurried through washing up, barely had time to organize anything, and did not even have time for breakfast. After changing into her work uniform, she clenched a piece of bread between her teeth and rushed out the door. She even forgot to bring her phone, until Bai Yu reminded her.
There was no police tape outside Sunshine Apartments, but Zhao Mingyue could see quite a few officers walking around. Many people were gathered in the corridor from the first to the third floor, noisily discussing something.
When she reached the first floor, she pushed out her bicycle and left immediately without worrying about anything else. One hand held the handlebar while the other held the slice of bread.
Zhao Mingyue’s quality of life was very poor, especially when it came to food. The fact that she still maintained such fair and delicate skin could only be attributed to strong genetics.
In her daily life, she never actively took care of her skin. In her own words, the money used to buy facial masks would be better spent on a few pounds of chicken wings. She liked eating chicken wings.
For her, even a facial cleanser was somewhat of a luxury. The only thing she used for skin care was water.
Eating bread while riding a bicycle was clearly not a wise decision. Sure enough, she choked on it. Her cheeks turned red before she finally managed to swallow it. Unfortunately, she had left in such a hurry that she had brought neither water nor milk. Her mouth felt dry, and her expression looked pitiful.
She had choked on bread.
Her mouth was dry.
And most importantly, she was extremely sleepy.
Ding.
The small bronze bell hanging on the doorframe rang with a clear sound. As Zhao Mingyue stepped into the convenience store, the wind chime by the window chimed as well.
“Manager, I am sorry. I am late again.”
She had been late yesterday, and now she was late again today. Zhao Mingyue felt somewhat embarrassed.
“It is fine. It is only ten minutes. It is nothing serious. You young people have a lot of pressure these days. I understand.”
The manager smiled kindly and did not say much more before tidying up and leaving.
Such a large convenience store was left entirely to Zhao Mingyue. She had long been accustomed to this. The boss trusted her, and she would naturally act responsibly. She would never take anything from the store.
However, today she could not resist.
She was too thirsty.
Helpless, she took a bottle of mineral water from the shelf, then took money from her pocket and paid for it herself.
Hidden inside her shadow, Bai Yu clearly saw that Zhao Mingyue had initially wanted to take the milk on the upper shelf. She hesitated for several seconds before finally choosing the cheapest bottle of mineral water below it.
“Mingyue, if possible, I hope you take better care of your body.”
Bai Yu’s voice sounded gently in Zhao Mingyue’s mind, though it carried no emotional tone.
“At least strengthen your physical condition.”
Zhao Mingyue lifted the mineral water and took a large gulp in a very unladylike manner. Hearing Bai Yu’s words, she sat down on a chair and sighed softly.
“But I… do not have money. It is really hard to earn money these days.”
“In the future, I will tell you how to make money.”
“Really?!”
Zhao Mingyue’s eyes lit up immediately.
“You can imagine that future missions will only become more difficult. That kind of life, where day and night are reversed, will place a great burden on your body. I will help you as much as I can in this regard.”
“Great! I knew Little Sister Bai Yu is the best!”
“You were looking at that bottle of milk just now. Go take it.”
“Okay!”
Zhao Mingyue immediately stood up. With quick movements, she grabbed the twelve-yuan bottle of milk from the counter, scanned it, and paid. After opening the cap and taking just one sip, she narrowed her eyes in enjoyment.
Sometimes there was simply no choice. Zhao Mingyue was just too poor. There was an eighty percent chance that she would not buy such milk even once in three years.
Bai Yu even worried that if Zhao Mingyue continued living like this, some foolish boy might someday lure her away with a few snacks.
To be honest, before meeting Zhao Mingyue, Bai Yu had never imagined that she would end up worrying about such things.
Now she had to think about everything.
She had to worry about whether Zhao Mingyue might be tricked away by someone.
Or whether one day she might simply starve to death.
Watching Zhao Mingyue’s satisfied expression, Bai Yu suddenly let out a small laugh.
It was only then that she realized something.
Had she just smiled?
Smiles came in many forms.
Some were mocking.
Some were sneering.
Some were manic.
And some came from genuine happiness.
In truth, none of these expressions appeared on her face very often—especially the last one.
She could not understand under what circumstances she would unconsciously show a sincere smile.
Killing an enemy?
Completing a mission?
Watching a plan succeed?
None of those seemed worthy of a smile to her.
Enemies could never be completely eliminated. After killing one enemy, more would always appear. Carelessness and complacency would only lead to death.
The same applied to the latter two situations.

Throughout the rest of the day, Zhao Mingyue noticed something.
Bai Yu seemed unwilling to talk to her.
Yesterday had been somewhat similar, but today it felt worse. Whenever Zhao Mingyue spoke to her, Bai Yu either gave no response or answered with very short replies.
Not only during the day—even at night Bai Yu showed no interest in talking to her. She did not even appear from the shadows.
Zhao Mingyue even returned to her bedroom and carefully examined her own shadow. It still clearly showed the silhouette of a girl with low twin tails and a long dress.
This meant Bai Yu had not left.
Zhao Mingyue found it strange, but she did not say anything. She tidied up the room, ate dinner, finished the remaining homework, and then took a bath. Afterward, she sat on the bed and looked at the notification on the black phone.
After completing the mission, the black phone had rewarded her with a lottery opportunity and 【Strength +1】.
However, since Bai Yu did not seem willing to talk to her, Zhao Mingyue decided to ask about it tomorrow.
“Bai Yu, I do not know what is wrong with you, but good night. See you tomorrow morning.”
The bedroom lights were turned off, and darkness filled the room.
Not long afterward, Zhao Mingyue fell asleep.
Only then did Bai Yu appear, sitting beside the bed.
She had not been ignoring Zhao Mingyue today.
Nor was she angry.
She had simply been thinking about a question.
What exactly was wrong with her?
She had only known Zhao Mingyue for two or three days, yet her mentality seemed to have changed too much.
Her goal with Zhao Mingyue was simple.
She needed Zhao Mingyue to genuinely fall in love with her in order to complete the mission.
At the same time, Bai Yu absolutely could not invest too much emotion in Zhao Mingyue.
The reason was simple.
Once the mission was completed, she would inevitably leave this world.
If she developed feelings for Zhao Mingyue, what would she do then?
Would she leave?
Or stay?
There was another problem.
When the mission was finished and Zhao Mingyue eventually learned Bai Yu’s true identity—that she was not a kind female ghost but a ruthless murderer—what kind of disappointment would appear in Zhao Mingyue’s eyes?
This was not because Bai Yu was imagining distant romantic scenarios.
It was not like a young boy fantasizing about married life with a girl before even confirming a relationship.
Rather, she had witnessed more than ten similar cases.
In every single one of those cases, the protagonist died in the end.
The Scum Game did not care about your emotions or feelings.
If you refused to leave, then you would die there.
It was that simple.
Just as Bai Yu remembered the image of a certain man dying for this very reason, Zhao Mingyue’s phone suddenly rang.
Someone was calling her through a messaging application.
The profile picture was of a very handsome man.
