Sheldon Caldwell watched the two of them interact, his heart filled with relief. It seemed bringing Vera Xavier here today was the right decision.

The way they chatted so easily made Sheldon Caldwell feel they were more like a real mother and daughter.

He also couldn’t understand why his own sister couldn’t get along with their mother like this.

Vera Xavier had military training the next day. Her dorm had lights-out and locked its gates at ten, and she didn’t have Nathaniel Nathan’s wall-climbing skills. So, she could only stay with Winter Sullivan for about an hour before she had to leave.

As she was about to leave, Winter Sullivan took her hand and said, "Vera, if you don’t find me a bother, please come and keep me company when you have free time!"

After saying this, she felt that since she and Vera Xavier weren’t related, the request was a bit much. So, she added, "Of course, your studies come first."

Vera Xavier saw the hopeful look in Winter Sullivan’s eyes, and her heart ached a little. She reached out, pulled Sheldon Caldwell over, and said, "Ma’am, you’ll have to talk to him, then. Whether or not I can leave campus is entirely up to him!"

Sheldon Caldwell immediately played along. "From now on, I’ll give you a special pass. After your military training each day, you’ll have free access in and out of the school."

But Vera Xavier wasn’t having it, rolling her eyes at him. "You’re trying to set me up again, aren’t you? The moment I step off campus, you’ll sound the assembly call and start a roll call, and then the next day you’ll make me run ten kilometers! I’m not falling for your tricks!"

Sheldon Caldwell: "..."

Winter Sullivan first chuckled, then put on a stern face and said to Sheldon Caldwell, "So you enjoy tormenting people, do you? I’m ordering you now: from now on, during military training, you are not to sound the assembly call if Vera is not on campus!"

Sheldon Caldwell immediately gave Winter Sullivan a military salute. "Yes, Commander!"

Although Winter Sullivan was currently just the director of a research institute, she held a very high military rank.

Vera Xavier giggled. "Sheldon Caldwell, I’ve found a real backer this time! With your mom here, you can’t bully me anymore!"

"Oh yeah, I’m terrified!" Sheldon Caldwell shot her a glare. "Back in the army, you had Nathaniel Nathan as a backer to bully me. And now, you’ve gone and found my mom to back you up. Are you planning on bullying me from every conceivable angle now? Vera Xavier, I must have owed you big time in a past life!"

Vera Xavier nodded. "That makes a lot of sense. You’d better spend this life paying me back, then!"

Sheldon Caldwell turned his head to look at Winter Sullivan. "Mom, Vera Xavier is bullying your son! You have to do something!"

"What was that? I didn’t hear anything," Winter Sullivan said with a perfectly straight face.

Sheldon Caldwell sighed dramatically. "There’s no justice in this world!"

Vera Xavier couldn’t help but laugh. She found Winter Sullivan incredibly endearing when she lied with such a straight face.

’It’s so strange how people connect,’ she mused internally. ’Sometimes you can know a person for a lifetime and they still feel like a stranger, while other times, you meet someone and it’s as if you’ve known them forever.’

After she and Sheldon Caldwell left Winter Sullivan’s room, Sheldon suddenly said to Vera Xavier with great seriousness, "Thank you!"

Hearing this, Vera Xavier looked at him like he was crazy. "Save it. If you really want to thank me, then I’m begging you, please stop messing with me."

Sheldon Caldwell pursed his lips. "I take back my ’thank you.’ You’re a really unlikable brat. Nathaniel Nathan must have been blind to fall for you!"

Vera Xavier said flatly, "If I’m so unlikable, then why were you thanking me?"
