Vera Xavier felt that something wasn’t quite right about her following Sheldon Caldwell to see Winter Sullivan this late at night...
But she was already out with him, so all she could do was cover her face to avoid being recognized.
The hospital wasn’t far from the school. In the nineties, there were still few cars in Veridia, so traffic wasn’t an issue. They arrived in just over ten minutes.
Vera Xavier followed Sheldon Caldwell straight to the hospital’s top floor. Because Winter Sullivan’s rank was so high and her position so important, bodyguards were stationed outside her room. One could only enter after an identity check.
The bodyguards all recognized Sheldon Caldwell, so of course, the person he brought with him didn’t require an inspection. They let Vera Xavier straight into the room.
When Vera Xavier followed Sheldon Caldwell inside, she found Winter Sullivan lying in bed alone, watching TV. For some reason, the sight of Winter’s lonely back made Vera’s heart ache a little.
In her past life, she hadn’t understood Winter Sullivan, much less known that Winter was her mother. She had only seen Winter’s cold and glamorous side, never imagining that she could be lonely too.
Winter Sullivan heard the noise and turned her head. When she saw that Sheldon Caldwell had brought Vera Xavier, the corners of her lips curved up slightly. "Vera, what are you doing here?"
Before Vera Xavier could answer, Sheldon Caldwell chimed in with a laugh, "Vera heard you were sick and wouldn’t stop pestering me to bring her to see you. She’s so troublesome!"
Vera Xavier shot him a glare, but he just winked back at her.
She understood what he meant. Winter Sullivan was ill right now, so they shouldn’t tell her about what happened with Susan Caldwell, as it might worsen her condition.
Even if Sheldon Caldwell hadn’t given her that look, she wouldn’t have run to Winter Sullivan to complain about Susan Caldwell. After all, Susan was, for all intents and purposes, Winter’s daughter.
So she huffed and said, "Auntie said I’m her friend. And since I’m her friend, of course I had to come see her!"
Sheldon Caldwell chuckled. Vera Xavier walked to Winter Sullivan’s bedside and said, "Auntie, Sheldon bullies me all the time! It’s because I’m Nathaniel Nathan’s girlfriend, and he knows he can’t win a fight against Nathaniel, so he takes it out on me. You have to stick up for me!"
Winter Sullivan laughed softly. "Alright, Auntie will stick up for you. Just call Nathaniel Nathan over to bully him right back!"
Sheldon Caldwell’s face immediately fell. "Mom, that’s not fair! I’m your son. How can you help an outsider bully me?"
As the three of them joked and laughed, the gloomy atmosphere that had filled the hospital room vanished, and Winter Sullivan’s spirits lifted considerably.
Winter Sullivan felt a sense of warmth in her heart as she watched Vera. Given the Caldwell Family’s current status, there was no shortage of people trying to curry favor with them. But Winter could tell that Vera hadn’t come today to flatter her; she was here out of genuine concern.
Though this was only the third time she had met Vera Xavier, she already knew Vera was a person of excellent character—not one to social-climb by fawning over the rich and powerful. This visit, in particular, was clearly not driven by any ulterior motive.
Vera Xavier had come this time simply to see Winter Sullivan and try to cheer her up. So after arriving, she began telling her amusing anecdotes and strange tales, keeping Winter laughing the whole time.
