Chapter 333: Five Openings
Martin reached the lodge shortly after Cassandra returned. By then, the strange bell’s note had faded, though neither of them had forgotten it. He read the complete log beside her.
Martin stopped scrolling when the record reached the moment her hand moved toward the confirmation window. One click would have given Cassandra another private army before anyone else knew it existed.
Cassandra waited without trying to justify the hesitation.
Martin closed the record. "I’m glad you refused, and that you didn’t hide this part from us." He tapped the final quest notice. "Now let’s find out what rang."
The foreign resonance led them into Slatewind Basin the following afternoon.
Emperoar’s formal party consisted of Chaosgraphy, Flash Fang, NukEncore, Crimson Halo, and Kill Clause. Their companions did not take up separate party slots. Angel walked beside Martin, Kumoe ranged ahead with Alexandra, and Kinnami drifted around Katherine in a ribbon of golden light.
Rias had joined under Flash Fang. The Crucible Concord token at her waist recorded the route, every monster classification, and anything connected to the Dark Force. She had made her role clear before they left.
"I’m observing and preserving evidence," she said. "That does not mean I’ll watch something eat you."
"Comforting," Martin replied.
The basin opened between low black ridges. Grass bent beneath the constant wind, and fragments of dull metal protruded from the soil like pieces of something much larger buried below.
Kill Clause stopped beside the first fragment.
While Cassandra followed the Hunter path’s quest, it separated the traces before her without naming their source or meaning. She still had to interpret what each aura revealed.
Angel and Kumoe carried living beast auras. Their power moved through them with the uneven rhythm of breath, thought, and emotion. Kinnami’s spirit light differed from both, but like the beasts, it carried a clear sense of intention.
The black shape crouched behind the next ridge had none.
"Monster," Cassandra said. "Dark Force core. Another aura is wrapped around it, but that layer only marks where its attention should turn."
"So we kill the core," Martin said.
"Yes."
The shape rose.
Bronze plates covered a long body assembled from black stone and empty hide. Its ribs curved outward around a hollow chest. No bell hung inside it, yet a deep note rolled across the basin with every step.

"Everyone saw that?" she asked.
The Hollow Resonator charged before anyone answered.
Martin caught its charge on the Breakwater Aegis. The impact drove his boots through the grass, but Stand Against the Current built resistance through the shield instead of letting the Elite carry him away.
He turned the charge, summoned the Galehook Trident, and hurled it beneath one bronze shoulder. Cast the Line marked the hit. When the monster tried to tear free, Martin gained enough pursuit speed to catch the shaft and wrench the plate outward.
"Encore!"
Fireball and Arcane Bolt folded together between Elisebeth’s hands.

The narrow flame shot through the opening Martin had exposed and burst inside the joint.

The Resonator’s hollow chest rang.
The sound struck from every direction. Martin’s shield faced the monster, but the pressure curved around its edges and reached for the people behind him.
Katherine’s tome opened. Kinnami raced through the party, leaving golden barriers around everyone she passed. NukEncore combined Mana Shield and Fireball, wrapping herself in Fire Shield before the note reached her.
The red barrier bowed inward but held.

Rias slipped beneath the next sweep of the Elite’s tail, but its edge grazed her arm. Her dagger entered between two plates and cut sideways, lifting bronze from the monster’s flank.
NukEncore sent another Fire Bolt through the seam before it closed.

The Hollow Resonator twisted toward her. Alexandra and Kumoe intercepted it together.
Kumoe’s curious head caught one forelimb while the right tracked the creature’s turn. The middle head sent restoration across the shallow cut left on Rias’s arm. Alexandra crossed both swords over the captured joint.
Pack Rhythm flashed, and the plate split.
NukEncore compressed Fire Thunder Bolt inside Fire Shield. The unstable power kicked against the barrier until she released it beside the exposed joint.
"Diva’s Rejection!"
The blast tore the limb free and hurled the Elite across the grass.

"Three spells! I make magic listen!" Elisebeth shouted.
The Resonator landed upright before she could celebrate any further. The note inside its chest rose until the metal fragments buried throughout the basin began shaking.
Martin threw the Galehook Trident.
It buried itself in the Elite’s upper back and applied Cast the Line. Martin activated Warden’s Arrival, appeared beside the embedded weapon, and switched to the Rainwarden Sword before the monster could turn.
It slammed a bronze claw into the Breakwater Aegis. Martin met the hit cleanly. Measured Answer sharpened his counter, and his next sword strike carved open the plate protecting its spine.
Kill Clause already held Patient Draw at its limit.
Her arrow drove into the gap and shattered a dark knot beneath the plate. The monster’s silver outer resonance flickered.
NukEncore’s Fire Bolt followed the arrow.

The Elite bucked Martin from its back. He landed on his feet as it charged Cassandra.
Angel struck it from the side.
Her crystal shell lifted the Resonator’s front half from the ground. Katherine sent Kinnami beneath the exposed body, and the spirit’s barrier expanded upward, holding the monster off balance long enough for Elisebeth to aim.
"Five!" Alexandra shouted.
Fire Bolt pierced its unprotected chest.

The Hollow Resonator crashed onto its back. Its health bar emptied.
No victory notice appeared.
Every bronze plate along its body opened at once.
The empty hide beneath them tore apart, revealing a dense black core wrapped in trembling silver rings. Its health bar returned with a second, darker layer.

The exposed core rang.
Sound bent around Martin’s raised shield and closed on the party from every side.
The battle had only shed its first skin.
