Chapter 334: Make Magic Listen
The Hollow Resonator’s second note reached them from every direction.
Martin kept the Breakwater Aegis raised, but the sound curved around its edges. Pressure closed in on his ribs, jaw, and the backs of his knees. Behind him, Elisebeth staggered without falling.
Kinnami’s barriers bent inward around the party. Katherine held her tome open with both hands while golden light streamed from its pages into the trembling protection.
"It’s wrapping around the shield. Spread out!" Martin shouted.
Rias pressed one hand against her ear and pointed at the silver rings. "Try bending one."
The black core rang again.
Martin summoned the Galehook Trident back into his hand and threw it through one of the silver rings surrounding the core. Cast the Line marked the hit and accelerated his pursuit.
Martin reached the core and ripped the trident sideways.
The ring bent. The note shifted with it, losing enough symmetry for the pressure around the others to weaken.
"Now!"
Everyone spread.
The Resonator grew new limbs from its torn hide and struck from both sides. Martin caught a rapid series of blows on Breakwater Aegis without losing his stance, then switched to Rainwarden Sword. The repeated impacts had hardened his footing, and his next counter snapped forward fast enough to sever the creature’s wrist and drive it away from the embedded trident.
NukEncore held the structures of Mana Shield, Fireball, and Arcane Bolt apart in her mind. Every attempt to bring them together made their edges shake.
Alexandra saw the silver rings begin turning toward Elisebeth. "Move!"
"I need one more second!"
The Resonator’s silver rings locked onto her before she found a stable way to join the three spells.
Martin dismissed the sword and summoned the Riftbell Warhammer. He activated Dominion of Arms, spreading Siegebreaker’s Decree through the party, then drove a committed swing into the nearest ring.
Faultnote rang through the impact.
[Shattered Plate]
[Fractured Guard]
The silver band cracked, but the sound inside it became sharper. A narrow wave cut toward Elisebeth’s throat.
Cassandra fired first.
Her arrow struck the wave’s source and changed its angle. The sound passed above Elisebeth’s shoulder, close enough to send her purple hair across her face.
"I have the core," Cassandra said.
The Hunter path separated the overlapping auras in Cassandra’s vision. The darkness packed inside the Resonator’s core held no rhythm beyond endless hunger. Around it, the silver resonance carried an intention that did not belong to the monster.
"The core is entirely Dark Force," she said. "The silver layer was borrowed from something living. It directs the monster’s attention, but it did not create the monster."
"Can you separate them?" Katherine asked.
"Not while the rings remain closed."
Martin struck the fractured ring again. The Riftbell Warhammer broke through it and sent silver fragments spinning across the basin.
The Resonator convulsed in a voiceless scream. Its remaining rings expanded, and the metal buried throughout Slatewind Basin tore free of the soil.
Blades, cracked plates, and bell fragments rose around the party.
Martin planted the Breakwater Aegis and activated Hold the Line.
Gold spread across the basin. Weak points appeared along the floating metal and the Resonator’s remaining bands. More importantly, Martin’s field gave everyone behind him a stable place inside the storm.
Angel lowered her crystal shell over Katherine and Elisebeth. Rias cut one spinning blade from the air. Kinnami raced between the others, renewing barriers before the next wave reached them.
Kumoe and Alexandra advanced together.
The curious head seized a half-formed limb. The middle sent restoration across the party while the right tracked the moment every ring aligned around the core. Alexandra followed that gaze and understood.
She crossed both swords through the limb Kumoe held, climbed over its collapsing shape, and drove one blade between the final two rings.
Kumoe pulled in the opposite direction.
Pack Rhythm flared, and the rings separated.
"Now!" Alexandra shouted.
NukEncore stopped trying to force three completed spells into the same space.
She formed Mana Shield first, widening it into a ring around everyone inside Hold the Line. Fireball entered the barrier and spread through its curved surface without escaping. Then Arcane Bolt pierced the circulating flames and gave all that power a single path forward.
[You have combined Mana Shield, Fireball, and Arcane Bolt.]
[Name your original spell.]
"Shepherd’s Crown!"
The ring contracted.
The circulating fire remained between the party and the Resonator’s final note, protecting everyone inside. Arcane power gathered the spell’s remaining force into a narrow wheel and drove it through the opening Alexandra and Kumoe had created.
The spell entered the Dark Force core, and every silver ring went still.
The Hollow Resonator burst apart in a silent wave. Shepherd’s Crown absorbed the backlash before dissolving into warm sparks.
Martin was still standing behind his shield, as were Katherine, Cassandra, Alexandra, Elisebeth, and Rias. All three of Kumoe’s heads remained alert, Kinnami still circled Katherine, and Angel had not moved from above them.
[Three-skill combinations created: 1/1]
[Elite or Boss enemies defeated: 1/1]
[Make Magic Listen completed.]
[Your class has evolved from Mage to Spellweaver.]
Orange-white threads wrapped around Elisebeth’s hands. They followed the paths of her three spells, separated, crossed, and settled beneath her skin.
Elisebeth went quiet. She turned both hands beneath the fading light and stared at the proof that all her experimenting had finally changed her class.
Martin lowered his shield and smiled. "Congratulations, Spellweaver."
Her triumphant expression returned. She opened the new skill panel, then frowned at the recorded spell name.
"Shepherd’s Crown makes me sound like a farmer."
Alexandra wiped her blade. "You submitted the name yourself."
"It sounded royal before the system judged it."
A dark metal fragment remained where the Elite had fallen. Cassandra picked it up.
[Quest Item Acquired: Unanswered Bell Fragment]
The bell from her quest rang through the basin.
[You have discovered a hidden path to the Level 60 Hidden Dungeon: Sunken Belfry.]
Worldshell Carapace gave one faint pulse against Martin’s chest. He opened its Arm Stage trial.
[Arm Stage Trial: Inactive]
[No unbonded intelligent beast is currently under your protection.]
Angel and Kumoe were bonded. Kinnami was a spirit, and no other beast stood inside Martin’s field. At the edge of Cassandra’s new perception, however, a silver living aura vanished behind the distant ridge.
"An intelligent beast was watching us," she said.
Martin searched the ridge without advancing. "Then we let them decide whether to approach."
No one pursued it.
They repaired their equipment, replenished their supplies, and agreed to approach the newly revealed entrance the next day.
