Harem Online: My Party Is Full of Beautiful Celebrities

Chapter 332: A Throne in the Dark

[Kill Clause: First circuit complete. Health stable. Equipment stable under movement.]

[Crimson Halo: Received. The Emergency Retreat Seal and route beacon are still reporting normally.]

Cassandra touched the narrow silver disk secured beneath her new belt.

[Kill Clause: Active and unobstructed. Continuing the planned circuit now.]

[Crimson Halo: Come back with all the pieces I adjusted still in their proper places.]

Cassandra closed the channel before Katherine could make the request sound any less professional.

Blackglass Ravine cut through the neutral wilderness beyond every academy boundary. Dark stone rose on both sides, its smooth surface breaking Cassandra’s reflection into pieces whenever she passed. Wind moved through the narrow channel with a low whistle, carrying dust over old claw marks and shallow tracks.

The Dawnless Pursuer Set made those signs easier to read. It did not tell her what had left them. She still had to judge the depth, direction, and spacing of the tracks.

A scrape sounded above her.

Cassandra turned and drew the Nightglass Longbow in one motion.

[Blackglass Stalker (Monster) Lv. 44]

The monster sprang from a ledge before Patient Draw had built enough accuracy to matter. Cassandra held for another fraction of a second, tempted by the growing bonus, then released too late.

Her arrow passed through the space beneath its ribs. One claw struck her shoulder and spun her into the wall.

The new armor absorbed most of the damage. It did nothing for the mistake.

Cassandra rolled beneath the second swipe and abandoned the full draw. She planted one foot, opened her hips, and led the monster instead of chasing its body with the bow. Her next arrow entered through the front of its throat when it committed to another leap.

The Stalker hit the ground and dissolved into black particles.

"Better," Cassandra murmured.

Not good. Better.

She recorded the hit and continued.

The next Stalker tried to circle behind her while a Glasswing Monster descended from above. Cassandra used the ravine wall to deny one angle, but she did not remain still long enough to maximize Patient Draw. Whenever the monsters forced her to move, she moved. A perfect shot that never left the string had no value.

By the end of the second encounter, the rhythm felt less foreign. Her real-world experience gave her balance, breath control, and a clean release. The game demanded that she decide when its assistance was worth trusting and when survival mattered more than another bonus.

She sent another scheduled check-in with eighty-three percent health.

The Emergency Retreat Seal went cold beneath her fingers.

Cassandra stopped.

Blackness spread across the mirrored walls without changing the evening sky above them. The reflections surrounding her turned their heads after she had gone still.

[Emergency retreat route obstructed by an unregistered Dark Force domain.]

The failed route scan entered her shared log. Katherine would see it.

Three monsters emerged from separate passages and approached without attacking. One by one, they lowered themselves around a throne rising from the black stone.

Her private Condemned Brand flared across her interface.

[Condemned Brand: Mother of Beastslayers]

A second window opened above the throne.

[The Dark Force recognizes the authority taken from you.]

[Monsters placed under your protection will obey you.]

[Their growth will strengthen you.]

[Their deaths will become resources.]

[Reclaim the authority that lesser hands stripped away.]

[Use that control to repair the mistakes made beneath your name.]

Cassandra did not dismiss it.

The Dark Force knew what would tempt her. It promised monsters, not intelligent beasts. With enough of them, she could tear open every hidden Beastslayer laboratory. She could hunt Raze without sending another person into the reach of Deadmaw and Gravefang. Monsters could shield civilians, carry supplies, and die in battles where a human death would cost far more.

Their deaths already produced resources whenever players hunted them. Accepting would only let her direct the cycle.

Cassandra knew that calculation because it had justified too many of her past decisions. Lives became assets, and control became protection.

Cassandra raised her hand.

The nearest monster pressed its head to the stone. A thread of power reached from its core toward her waiting palm, warm and obedient. Her fingers stopped within a breath of the confirmation window.

She could regain the authority she had lost and turn it against everything built beneath her name.

She would only have to build it where no one else could see.

Cassandra looked at the throne.

"If repairing what I did requires another throne no one else can see, then I have learned nothing."

She closed her hand into a fist and lowered it.

"No."

The offered warmth vanished.

The three monsters screamed and attacked together.

Cassandra moved before they surrounded her. Her first arrow struck the closest monster through the eye, but darkness rebuilt its head before the body finished recoiling. Thin black connections stretched from its spine to the throne.

She changed targets.

The next arrow severed one connection. The monster collapsed so suddenly that the creature behind it crashed into the empty shell. Cassandra sprinted along the wall, drew while moving, and used Dawnless Pursuer’s steadier footing to release without letting the uneven glass turn her ankle.

A second connection snapped.

The final monster caught her thigh and drove her down. Cassandra let the bowstring slacken instead of wasting the shot at a bad angle. She kicked its jaw aside, rolled, and rose with enough distance to reach full draw.

Patient Draw began building.

The monster charged.

Cassandra waited until its movement committed to one line, then released through the thread behind its chest.

The last connection broke.

All three bodies dissolved. Cassandra put another arrow through the throne before the domain could form replacements. Black stone fractured around the shaft, and the false darkness peeled away from the ravine walls.

When her Emergency Retreat Seal warmed again, Cassandra broke it immediately. Silver light formed a tight ward around her, then raced ahead over the ground in a narrow line. The route bent through the ravine rather than crossing its walls, but it was clear, and the seal had already sent an emergency alert through the private channel. Cassandra followed it at a run.

Two more Stalkers emerged during the retreat. Her first arrow forced one aside. The second Stalker struck the ward and recoiled, giving her enough time to pass without becoming trapped in another fight. The silver protection collapsed soon afterward. Cassandra followed the marked route through the rest of the ravine, her footsteps muffled by the Dawnless set.

Several minutes later, Cassandra crossed the neutral lodge’s threshold under her own power. She locked herself inside the private room, opened the shared channel, and drank a recovery potion.

[Kill Clause: The Dark Force obstructed my return and offered me authority over monsters. I considered accepting. My hand moved toward the confirmation window before I refused. I destroyed the domain and returned safely. Complete record attached.]

She left the silence before her answer in the recording. Cutting it out would have hidden how close she came to accepting.

[Crimson Halo: Log received. Stay where you are.]

[Emperoar: On my way.]

[NukEncore: It tried to give Elder Sister a monster army?!]

Cassandra waited several seconds for another message. None came.

A new window opened before Cassandra.

[Hidden Progression Path Discovered: Hunter of the Dark Force]

[This path has not evolved or replaced your current class.]

[Path Quest: The Unanswered Bell]

[Trace the foreign resonance wrapped around a Dark Force monster core.]

[Determine what taught its hunger where to turn.]

Somewhere beyond the lodge, a bell rang once.

No bell stood anywhere nearby.
