Chapter 142: Doppelganger or Ghost In The House ?
Early the next morning, Dennis and Daisy headed south. They had been called to a meeting by Steve, who was already there along with Gary, Olivia, Jason, and Kimberly. Despite it being a day off, Gary had picked them up by car because they needed to select the core team members at the Emerald Military Academy in the south—the second round, which now had only a few candidates remaining. Back at the house, Elenor and Martha looked after Destiny, while William borrowed Dennis’s car to drive around the city alone and buy toys and various things for the baby, since Elenor didn’t want to go, claiming she wanted to stay with Destiny.
Elenor sat on the sofa, happily holding Destiny, who kept squirming and laughing as Elenor talked to her. Meanwhile, Martha went to the kitchen to prepare formula for Destiny. Of course, they were completely unaware that in the basement, inside a secret room, the six other Daisys were watching them through the surveillance cameras.
"It feels so good to see both moms looking so happy with Destiny," Daphne said, resting her face on the table while watching the television.
"Hey... quit staring at them the whole time," Dulcia said, busy playing a game on another TV.
"Deborah, did you leave the formula in the kitchen?" Donna asked, watching Martha as she prepared a bottle.
"Yep... I made three more cans and put them on top of the cabinet... don’t worry, I put them in containers from a famous brand," Deborah answered proudly.
"Oh, good. I was just worried that if Mom gave her a different formula, it might not sit well with Destiny," Donna replied.
"Relax... I’ve anticipated everything. Once it runs out, I’ll just make more," Deborah replied.
"By the way, did the baby crib in the bedroom get moved out? What if the two moms go into our room and see three large beds in there? Dennis and Daisy left in a hurry, didn’t they?" Diana asked.
"Oh... not yet... I’ll bring it down to the living room," Dahlia answered, standing up immediately.
Dahlia, wearing her watch and disguised as Daisy, walked to the tube and teleported directly into the bedroom. She began tidying up the room by herself. After Dahlia left, the other five relaxed, looking away from the large television that displayed every corner of the house from the surveillance cameras. Meanwhile, in the living room—thump—Elenor heard a sound from upstairs and immediately turned around. She saw Martha already sitting beside her, with Destiny in her arms drinking milk.
"Martha, did you hear a sound?" Elenor asked.
"No, I didn’t. Why? What is it?" Martha asked, confused, as she swayed gently and watched Destiny drink.
"It’s nothing... maybe it was just my imagination," Elenor replied, leaning back again and holding Destiny’s feet, giving them a little massage.
But shortly after, "thump... thump," it sounded like someone carrying something quite large was walking through the upstairs hallway. This time, Martha heard it too, and both of them turned toward the stairs. A moment later, Daisy—who was actually Dahlia—appeared coming downstairs carrying the baby crib. She set it down in the living room and smiled at the two moms.
"Oh... you brought Destiny’s crib down?" Martha asked.
"Yeah, Mom, that way if Destiny gets sleepy and wants to nap, it’s easier," Dahlia replied, disguised as Daisy.
"Oh, alright then. That’s good," Martha answered.
"Okay, I’m going back up, Mom," Daisy replied.
Without waiting for a response, Daisy—who was Dahlia—immediately headed back up to the second floor. Martha, still cradling Destiny whose mouth was moving as she sucked on her milk, turned to see Elenor looking stunned, as if she had just seen a ghost.
"Why do you look like that, Elenor?" Martha asked.
"Was that... Daisy?" Elenor asked, trembling.
"Well, yeah, it was Daisy. Why? You’re acting strange," Martha asked, confused.
"Didn’t she... leave early this morning with Dennis? Didn’t their friend pick them up?" Elenor asked.
Hearing Elenor’s words, the realization hit Martha, and the color drained from her face as if it were fading away. Slowly, she turned to look behind the sofa at the baby crib sitting there, then looked back at Elenor.
"Huh... you’re right," Martha answered, turning pale.
"Let’s go check upstairs," Elenor suggested.
"No way... let’s wait for your husband first," Martha replied, starting to feel scared.
"Yeah... I’ll call him and tell him to get home fast," Elenor added, reaching for her smartphone on the coffee table.
Elenor immediately sent a message to William, telling him to get home fast and stop shopping. Meanwhile, in the council room, "Ugh... I’m bored; I want to soak in our bathtub upstairs," Dulcia muttered.
"Can I just lie down in the room and read a book?" Daphne asked.
"Yeah, I want to just hang out in the room too... it’s nice in here, but the room is better," Donna added.
"Alright, everyone head up. Dahlia hasn’t even come back yet anyway," Diana said, standing up.
"I’ll stay here for a bit; I have some work to do. I’ll catch up later," Deborah replied.
"Okay," Diana answered.
Finally, Diana, Daphne, Dulcia, and Donna entered the tube to teleport to the master bedroom. As soon as they arrived, they started lounging on the bed, reading books, and so on—naturally, all of them were disguised as Daisy for the sake of their collective security.
A few moments later, Elenor and Martha, waiting for William to return, sat motionless on the sofa. Meanwhile, Destiny, who had fallen back asleep after finishing her milk, was placed in the baby crib they had moved in front of the couch. Then they heard the sound of footsteps and noise coming from upstairs. Naturally, both of them became more confused than before and went on high alert, fearing an intruder had broken in—they seemed to have temporarily pushed the "Daisy" incident from a moment ago to the back of their minds.
"Is this neighborhood even safe?" Elenor asked.
"Based on the surroundings, it looks safe, but you never know. I think we have to go check upstairs," Martha answered.
"Alright... let’s go, while Destiny is still sleeping," Elenor replied.
The two of them eventually crept upstairs, grabbing whatever they could find nearby to use as weapons. Elenor snatched an umbrella, and Martha grabbed a picture frame that wasn’t too large but was quite thick. When they reached the top and approached the master bedroom, they heard voices inside that sounded like people talking. The two of them glanced at each other and nodded. Martha gripped the doorknob while Elenor stood ready. "Blam," the door swung open, and instantly, Elenor and Martha’s faces turned pale as ghosts.
They saw Dulcia stepping out of the bathroom with a towel over her shoulder and no clothes on; Daphne lying facedown on the bed reading a comic while eating snacks; Diana watching television with Donna; and Dahlia lounging on the bed also watching TV. Every single one of them turned to look at the two grandmothers, and every single one of them had Daisy’s face, frozen in shock.
"Waaaaaah!"
Suddenly, both Elenor and Martha turned and bolted, running for their lives and dropping their makeshift weapons in front of the door. Dulcia kicked the two fallen objects aside and casually closed the door again.
"Why did the moms run away?" Dulcia asked.
The five of them looked at each other, and finally, reality set in. Their faces suddenly turned pale as the color drained away. They realized they were never supposed to be seen by the moms and dad. They had forgotten because they were usually inside Daisy’s body when they met them, and this was the first time they had encountered their parents and in-laws while existing separately.
"Oh shit," the five of them shouted.
Meanwhile, downstairs, Elenor and Martha immediately grabbed Destiny and carried the sleeping baby out onto the porch. They saw Dennis’s car pull into the driveway and come to a stop. William stepped out casually, carrying a pile of toy packages for Destiny. When he saw his wife holding a sleeping Destiny on the porch alongside Martha—both of them looking absolutely terrified as if they’d seen a ghost—William dropped his shopping on a porch chair and ran over.
"What’s going on? Why are you bringing a sleeping Destiny out here?" William asked, confused.
"Da... Daisy... there are so many Daisys upstairs... for real," Elenor stammered.
"It’s... it’s true, I saw them too," Martha added.
William looked at Elenor and Martha’s trembling legs, then back at their pale faces. His instincts told him something was definitely wrong inside. He opened the door and stepped in, followed closely by Elenor, who was still clutching Destiny, and Martha. After scanning the living room and finding it empty except for the baby crib, he checked the surroundings.
"There’s no one here?" William asked.
"Up... upstairs, the master bedroom," Elenor answered.
"Wait... you went into our kids’ bedroom?" William asked, surprised.
"Just go up there, check it!" Elenor replied, shoving her husband toward the stairs.
William finally went upstairs and headed straight for the master bedroom. He opened the door to find the room empty, with only a single bed in the center. Elenor and Martha peeked inside.
"Where? It looks the same as it did when I saw it yesterday?" William asked.
Of course, Elenor and Martha were shocked out of their wits, blinking repeatedly as they looked at the room, which had changed back to how it looked yesterday. They remained certain of what they had seen and finally shouted in protest; they were absolutely sure they had seen five Daisys in the room along with two extra beds besides the main one. Their shouting woke Destiny, who immediately burst into loud cries.
"Oh boy... quiet down, relax... you woke Destiny up and now she’s crying," William said, immediately taking Destiny from Elenor’s arms.
William managed to calm Destiny down, but he didn’t ignore the fact that his wife and Martha were still deathly pale. Once Destiny stopped crying but remained awake, he handed her back to Martha and asked them to go downstairs. Then, he pulled out his phone and called Dennis. Dennis picked up right away.
"Son, we need to talk," William said, sound serious.
"Huh... what’s up, Dad?" Dennis asked, sounding surprised and confused.
"Your mother and your mother-in-law saw five Daisys in your bedroom, but I checked and there’s nothing," William answered.
"Huh," there was a long pause—a very long pause. On the other end of the line, Dennis and likely Daisy must have turned pale as ghosts.
