Chapter 38 - 38: Bird in a Cage
I left a piece of paper for Lany.
I felt uncomfortable leaving her, but I had to obey the bird's words, so I immediately knocked on her bedroom door.
"Lany, I'm going to leave!" I shouted loudly, but there was still no response. I also did not hear anyone doing any activities inside the room, so I was forced to break down the door.
"Lany… are you inside?" I asked loudly, but still received no answer.
"Lany, I'm going to break your door, step away from it." After that, I kicked the door with my foot. I tried several times, but on the last try, I managed to force the door open, and at that moment my eyes widened when I saw Lany covered in blood.
I hurriedly moved closer and checked her pulse.
"Lanyyy… what happened?" I said in panic. After that, I immediately tore the cloth on the bed and bandaged it first to stop the bleeding on her hand.
"Lany, wake up. What happened to you?" I asked in a panicked voice, then I lifted Lany onto the bed and prepared to treat her wounds.
"Wait, I will look for medicine for you." After that, I immediately went out and searched for the remaining medicine in the house.
After five minutes, I found some medicines that were still available in the house. Fortunately, there were some, although not enough, but I could mix herbal plants and crush them so I could temporarily stop the wound on her hand.
I cleaned the wound first and applied the crushed herbal plants, then covered it with cloth so no air could enter.
After making sure everything had been treated, I rushed back to the kitchen to make sugar water so that she might regain consciousness quickly.
When I finished making the sugar water, I returned to the bedroom and saw Lany still lying with her eyes closed. I checked her breathing temperature and felt that it was already normal, unlike before when it felt very weak. I immediately gave the sugar water to her lips.
I pulled a chair and looked at her sadly. If I had not broken down the door, would she still be alive? I glanced at her pale face. What are you actually hiding? I asked in my heart while looking at Lany who was still unconscious.
I held her hand and stared at her with a gaze that I could not explain.
"What actually happened to you!" After saying that, I forgot my hunger. Without realizing it, Lany had already woken up. She had been awake for a while but was reluctant to open her eyes, and at that moment tears fell from the corners of her eyes.
My eyes felt sleepy, and slowly I began to close them.
When I woke up, the sunlight was already dim, and from the window it looked like it was almost night. I stood up from the chair and began lighting the candles that were already placed in several rooms so it would not be too dark.
I jumped in surprise when Lany suddenly looked at me in the dim night.
"Lany, you're awake?" I asked while holding my chest, and she replied with a nod.
"Thank you for saving me," she said, but I immediately approached her and placed my hand on her forehead to check her body temperature.
"Do you feel better now?" I asked, and she nodded.
"Why did you do such a foolish thing again?" I asked her curiously, while she turned her face away. One thing that confused me was that she seemed to be the same age as Lira, but she was more mature than Lira. She also looked very similar to Lira, but I ignored it and asked her again.
"Well, if you don't want to tell me, I'll prepare dinner first!" I said as I stood up. When I was about to leave, Lany suddenly held my hand, so I caught it and lowered myself back down.
"What is your purpose for going to the palace?" she asked while staring at me as if waiting for an answer she truly hoped for. The sound of crickets echoed in the night as I continued to stare into her eyes. I fell silent, confused about what to say.
"I just want to return the money," I said, but she shook her head as if she already knew what I was looking for.
"I guess you are planning something," she said with suspicious eyes, but I smiled thinly.
I sat back down while biting my lip, my gaze wandering around, and it seemed I had to emphasize it to her once more.
"My business is my business. Your business is not my business." But she still shook her head.
"Can you take me to the palace?" she asked, and I raised my eyebrow in confusion.
"Why should I take you?" I asked with my arms crossed, staring at her, but she fell silent for a moment.
"He will help us!" she said, and I raised my eyebrow, not understanding what she meant by us.
"Us?" I asked to confirm, and she nodded.
"I do have business with someone, but taking you away from here is not my business, and I also don't want to be involved with many people," I said seriously, while Lany continued to shake her head.
"Please help me, and I will help you for the rest of my life." Her statement made me raise my eyebrow, not understanding what she meant.
"You want to go to the palace?" I asked while looking at her eyes, and she nodded.
"Yes, I want to go with you!" she said while holding my hand and looking at me pleadingly.
"I promise I won't trouble you!" She raised her hand and swore not to make things difficult for me.
"Then what about your brother? Won't he look for you?" I asked, remembering her brother named Agis.
"Yes, I will meet him." I remained silent, thinking. If she wanted to meet Agis, why did she have to wait for my approval and go with me to the palace?
"Alright, you will come with me," I said with my arms crossed, turning my face away.
"Tomorrow we will leave!" I said to her, but she shook her head.
"It's already night, and your condition is still injured." She still shook her head.
"We must leave here immediately," she said, and I became more suspicious of her. Was she hiding something from me? Perhaps I was being used as a shield for her reason to leave this place.
"Your condition is still injured, Lany." She immediately stood up and walked upright. She held her wound and shrugged as if she was fine.
"I'm fine," she tried to explain, but I narrowed my eyes.
"Then why did you intend to end your life?" I asked while staring at her with my arms crossed. Lany fell silent for a moment.
"I… I don't know how to get out of here," she said while lowering her head, and I frowned upon hearing her words.
"You said you don't know how to get out of here?" She nodded again.
"You were deceived by him. And you are the second person successfully brought here by him." My eyes widened when she said that. She seemed like a different person now. She had emotions clearly visible on her face.
"Who is Agis?" I asked with wide eyes, and she shook her head.
"At first I thought he was my brother, but what happened earlier made me remember something about myself. I don't remember any childhood memories with him or memories of living and staying here. And I accidentally found a book whose language I do not understand. Maybe you can understand what the book means. I screamed calling your name, but you didn't respond to my screams from inside." She spoke softly, and I was confused about how to respond.
"So you… have been screaming all this time?" I asked, and she nodded.
"We should leave this place immediately." I nodded. No wonder when I entered this forest it felt like something was wrong. It seemed that Agis had sealed this forest so that it could not be seen by anyone and was only known by those he had targeted long ago.
"Come on, I've been waiting for you." After that, I began taking Lany out of this place.
I looked back at the house we were about to leave. When I was about to pass through the gate, suddenly Lany was thrown back, while I could enter and exit freely.
"What happened to you?" I asked in panic when I saw Lany thrown quite far.
"It seems I can't go with you." She coughed and spat out black-colored blood.
With all my strength, I went back inside, and as I suspected, I was fine when passing through the gate.
"Lany… what is actually happening?"
"I don't know. But it hurts so much." She held her chest.
"Hold on… I will treat you."
I immediately moved away from her and went back inside to look for medicine that could ease her pain. My steps stopped, and I turned back toward her.
"So who are you actually?"
