Chapter 503: Extra: Luna Jennings x Benjamin Morgan (7)
Luna Jennings huffed and puffed her way up the stairs, anxiously pressing the doorbell.
Her mother, Holly Warren, opened the door.
"Mom, what’s wrong? Are you alright?" Luna Jennings asked, nervously reaching out to feel Holly Warren’s forehead.
She pulled her inside as she did.
"Is this Luna? You’ve gotten so big."
A vaguely familiar voice suddenly chimed in.
Luna Jennings turned to look, asking in surprise, "Aunt Phoebe? Lynn?"
Her expression immediately darkened. When she was a child, this mother-daughter duo had bullied her and her mother relentlessly.
Her paternal grandmother was from the countryside and had old-fashioned ideas. Since Luna’s father was her only son, all she cared about was having a male heir to carry on the family name.
But her mother’s first child was a girl—her—which earned the scorn of her father’s side of the family. They never missed a chance to make cutting remarks to her and her mother.
Her mother was a city girl and refused to put up with their behavior. For her father’s sake, she would take Luna to visit them during the holidays, but otherwise, she cut off all contact.
Even so, they would come home from every holiday visit fuming with anger.
Back then, this very same Lynn had carelessly pushed her into a river, almost drowning her. Her mother had flown into a rage right then and there at her grandmother’s house, tearing into the whole crowd of relatives, from those making snide remarks to the ones trying to play peacemaker.
She had even pointed a finger in her father’s face and given him an ultimatum: divorce her, or leave with her.
Of course, her grandmother wouldn’t let her son get a divorce. After all, Luna’s mother came from a good family and was a city dweller.
After that, her mother never took her back for the holidays again, clearly intending to cut ties with her husband’s family.
But that side of the family was shamelessly thick-skinned. Since her mother wouldn’t visit them, they started showing up at her house every year, using all sorts of excuses to eat their food and take things with them when they left.
Concerned with keeping up appearances, her mother would just swallow her anger and endure it. But Luna refused to put up with them. Besides, this was her turf.
She had rounded up the neighborhood kids to bully Lynn, managing to drive the mother-daughter duo away for good.
’Now that they’re back, who knows what kind of trouble they’re planning to stir up.’
Phoebe Jennings, wearing her mother’s pajamas, smiled and beckoned Luna over, acting as if she owned the place.
Lynn Upton, however, seemed to have grown up and developed a sense of propriety; her gaze was timid and reserved.
"Aunt Phoebe, what are you here for this time?" Luna Jennings didn’t bother being polite.
Holly Warren, standing beside her, gave her a little tug.
Being as thick-skinned as she was, Phoebe Jennings paid Luna Jennings’s attitude no mind.
She said with a smile, "Luna, our Lynn got into a university here in Kingsford. From now on, you two cousins will have each other for company."
Luna Jennings hadn’t expected that. She looked at Lynn Upton in surprise.
"Congratulations. Which university?"
"Metropolis University."
Luna Jennings finally broke into a smile. "Not bad. That’s a good school."
"Thank you, Luna," Lynn Upton replied shyly.
While they were chatting, Benjamin Morgan arrived, having hauled Luna Jennings’s incredibly heavy suitcase up five flights of stairs.
"Thank you for all your trouble, young man."
Wendy Jennings quickly took the suitcase, inviting him to come in and sit down.
"Oh, and who is this?" Phoebe Jennings’s eyes lit up as she pushed her way over to size up Benjamin Morgan.
Benjamin Morgan was handsome and clearly not just anybody.
Her aunt was a notorious snob, always scheming to marry her daughter off to a wealthy man.
Luna Jennings’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly pulled her wallet from her pocket, took out two hundred-yuan bills, and shoved them directly into Benjamin Morgan’s hand.
"Thanks for the ride, sir. I appreciate you helping me with my luggage. This is for the fare, and the extra is to buy yourself a popsicle or something."
She then shot Benjamin Morgan a look, winking and making it clear he was to play along.
Benjamin Morgan glanced at her, then his eyes swept over the others in the room. Finally, he stuffed the money into his pocket, turned, and left without a word.
The moment the words left her mouth, Luna Jennings regretted them. Her heart pounded with anxiety. ’He must be angry,’ she thought.
After he was gone, she made up a quick excuse and ran out of the house after him, but his car was already far down the road.
Luna Jennings quickly called Benjamin Morgan.
"Hello? Morgan? I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to say that, I just... Anyway, please don’t be angry. I really didn’t mean it. Can you forgive me?"
Listening to her frantic voice, Benjamin Morgan could almost picture her expression. A faint smile played on his lips as he replied with an ambiguous statement, "You don’t have to apologize. I am your driver, after all."
