"Mom, what nonsense are you talking about! Don’t you forget, I’m the one who paid for this house! Without my permission, no one has the right to kick Dad out!"
"Eleanor Bishop, are you even my daughter anymore? Why do you always take an outsider’s side? And don’t you forget, I’m Yara Ross, the woman who carried you for ten months!" Yara Ross couldn’t stand it when her daughter showed favoritism.
But every time, her daughter sided with Harold Bishop.
"I’m going back to the Ross family’s home for a while. When I get back, Harold Bishop, I expect you to have found another place to live." With that, Yara Ross furiously dragged her suitcase toward the door.
Eleanor Bishop’s face was deathly pale. She threw her chopsticks onto the table and said angrily, "Dad, don’t worry. Without my permission, Mom has no right to kick you out of this house."
Harold Bishop smiled as if nothing had happened. "Let’s eat. We’ll just keep eating." As he spoke, his eyes were devoid of any emotion, as if the woman who had just left wasn’t his wife.
Seeing her dad’s unconcerned expression, Eleanor Bishop furrowed her brow in worry. ’After all, my parents used to have a very good relationship and rarely argued.’ The most intense fight she could remember was probably the time her mom insisted she get engaged to Jason Lockwood. She hadn’t wanted to, and her dad, unwilling to force her, had planned to reject the Lockwood Family’s proposal. But at the time, her mom was fixated on the Lockwoods’ family status and was especially satisfied with Jason Lockwood as a potential son-in-law. As a result, her parents had a vicious fight.
Later, with her dad’s help, she ran away from her engagement party. Not long after that, something happened to her father.
It was probably after what happened to her father that the conflict between her parents deepened. Eventually, her father fell ill, leaving behind a complete mess. Unable to handle the pressure, her mother’s resentment grew, directed at both her daughter and her husband.
That was why, all this time, she had tried to do better, to make up for her past mistakes. Even after being the target of her mother’s angry tirades for so many years, she never dared to say a single word in her own defense.
「Hotel.」
Howard Rhodes handed the investigation file to Archie Lockwood, frowning. "Boss, there’s something about Miss Bishop... I’m not sure if I should bring it up."
"What is it?"
"Well, for the past three years, Miss Bishop has been on the blacklist of every matchmaking agency in Jevon."
’A matchmaking blacklist?’
Archie Lockwood looked up at Howard Rhodes in confusion.
"Um, it seems to have been caused by Miss Bishop’s mother, Ms. Ross."
"Explain!"
"Apparently, Ms. Ross often accompanies Miss Bishop on her blind dates. On several occasions, Ms. Ross didn’t ask for a name or age—she went straight to asking about family assets and savings! If the man turned out to be poor, Ms. Ross would thoroughly humiliate him. So, in the end, almost no matchmaking agency dares to set Miss Bishop up with anyone anymore."
Hearing Howard Rhodes’s report, Archie Lockwood’s lips curved into a wicked smile. "Interesting."
"Ms. Ross has three main criteria for choosing a son-in-law. Basically, as long as the conditions are met, she’ll agree to marry off her daughter."
"What are the criteria?"
"First, he must have at least two million in savings! Second, he must pay her three hundred thousand a year for her retirement! And third, the man must be an orphan—supposedly, this is so he won’t become a future financial burden for her daughter."
