Chapter 219: The Competition 3
One word went through the minds of the people watching all around Nahaar.
’What were these two idiots doing?’ Everyone thought. One closed his eyes like he didn’t care he was falling into the sky, and one was downright taking a nap?
Everyone watched as the two youths streaks towards the ground like meteors tearing into the atmosphere. It was guaranteed that were they to hit the ground at such speeds, there was no doubt that nothing of them would remain.
Some faint hearted even winced as the two youths reached only a hundred meters from the ground, peeling their eyes from the screen, not wanting to see the gore that would follow.
However, just shy of a few meters from the ground, the demon youth suddenly snapped his eyes open, revealing a pair of crimson orbs. At that moment, a river made of blood materialized into existence around his form, anchoring his existence, and instantly halting his body to a full stop- mid air.
A concussive force spread outward with a thunderous boom, dunes of white sand exploded with the force of a cataclysmic eruption as the youth suddenly went from falling at high velocity, to coming to a complete stop instantly.
The youth then, along with the river of blood around him slowly floated towards the ground, his boots landing gently on the white sands of a searing desert.
The other youth who had been taking a nap however, was much less dramatic. The moment he approached the ground, an invisible glass materialized beneath his falling form. The moment his body hit the invisible glass, his body sank right through it, before it instantly shattered and disappeared.
Not a moment later, another invisible glass appeared vertically on the ground, and his form reappeared from it almost instantly, now on his feet, and both hands in his pocket.
"HOOOOOOOLY SHIIIIIIIT!!!!! WHAT A START OF THE GAME!!!!!" The commentator roared on top of his lungs.
Those who had witnessed what the two youths had done stared in disbelief, especially those who had thought the two youths were done for.
They all saw how the young demon had held himself using a river of blood, as for the human youth, he simply disappeared from his sleeping position, and reappeared standing on his feet. One moment, he looked like he was taking a nap, falling through the air and about to impact the ground at speeds some couldn’t even comprehend, and the next, he was standing on his feet.
It was even debated whose feat was more ridiculous. Not surprisingly, Kaal was supported by the demons, and even some of the other races, because he was handsome (Women obviously). Damon on the other hand was supported by mostly humans, and a few cool guys from the other races who though his stunt was cool.
In the human domain, the spectators were especially hyped.
"WHAT THE HELL?!"
"THAT IS SO PEAK!"
"DAMN, WHO THE HELL IS THIS GUY?!"
------------
Meanwhile, as everyone was hyped about his performance, the young man had another thoughts entirely.
’My aura must be overflowing at this moment, hehehe.’ he chuckled inwardly. ’As if I’d let Kaal take all the attention himself.’ Damon thought, thinking about how the young demon acted in the novel.
Even though he didn’t know what was happening outside, Damon could guess that everyone was awed by what he just pulled off. ’Sometines it’s good to show off a little, especially if you’re just that good.’ he grinned.
Once his self praising thoughts faded, Damon looked around to determine his surroundings. He was in what looked like a sprawling land, that looked like an apocalyptic city.
"Why is everyone obsessed with this cliche landscape?" Damon muttered under his breath. He had read about this setting so much before coming into this world. And since morning to this world, this was the second time he was encountering this kind of setting.
Not that he was actually pissed about it. On the contrary, no matter how cliche it was, it actually pleased him, after all, his mirror sense, could sense countless reflections all over the landscape, so much that it was almost overwhelming his senses.
Damon soon moved his eyes away from the apocalyptic city and cast his gaze into the distance horizon. His enhanced eyes caught some figures still falling through the sky, kilometers away.
"It seems they decided to spread us too far apart." Damon mused. That didn’t happen in the novel. Damon continued to watch the figures still drifting towards the ground. He could do nothing but wait for the next instruction of the competition.
After a minute, the commentator’s voice rang out from everywhere.
"ALL 354 PARTICIPANTS WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY SURVIVED THE FIRST PHASE, CONGRATULATIONS!!! AS FOR THE 46 WHO DIDN’T.... WELL, SEE YOU IN THE AFTERLIFE...."
Across the entire pocket realm, all the youths listened carefully with dreadful hearts. It had just started, and 46 people had already died, just like that. ’Isn’t this supposed to be a friendly competition?!’ many thought in horror.
Outside the pocket realm, the sight of crushed bodies, or in some cases, oily splatter of blood on the ground, dominated the projections. Many winced at the sight of the gore. Those were youths who had fallen without any means of sustaining themselves in the air, or slowing down their speed.
"NOW, FOR THE NEXT PHASE WILL BEGIN IMMEDIATELY. LOOK ABOVE YOU." The voice of the commentator echoed through the pocket realm. All the youths looked above them, and the moment they did, they noticed numerous small red dots high up in the sky.
"THOSE SPHERES YOU SEE UP THERE, THAT’S THE SECOND PHASE OF THIS COMPETITION. TO ADVANCE TO THE THIRD PHASE, YOU HAVE RO HAVE CAPTURED ONE OF THIS SPHERES BY THE TIME THE TWENTY FOUR HOURS ALLOCATED TO THE SECOND PHASE IS EXHAUSTED.
OF COURSE THE SPHERES WONT JUST WAIT AND LET YOU CAPTURE THEM, YOU’D HAVE TO WORK FOR IT. AND OH, DID I FORGET TO MENTION, THERE ARE ONLY A HUNDRED OF THEM, I GUESS I NEED NOT SPECIFY WHAT YOU ARE TO DO."
The youths understood exactly what the voice meant. The instructions were clear enough after all, his words were as closer as they could be. They would need to plunder and reduce competition as much as possible, since only a hundred could get the spheres.
"Another difference from the novel." Damon shook his head. In the novel, the second phase was far from this.
"YOU CAN SEE THE REAL TIME LOCATION OF SLL SPHERS, YOU JUST HAVE TO THINK IF ’MAP’, AND THE MAP WOULD APPEAR BEFORE YOU. THE SECOND PHASE HEREBY STARTS.....NOW!!!"
The moment the voice finished speaking, all the spheres up above in the sky shot towards the ground in different directions. Coincidentally or not, one even shot towards Damon’s vicinity.
Damon didn’t waste a second, the ground beneath his feet shattered in concentric waves as he disappeared from his spot, moving at speeds beyond mach 2. Glasses and windows in the ruined city shattered like a domino his wake.
He covered over a kilometer in les than the moment it would take for a mundane human to blink. He reached the red sphere just as it was only a meter away from the ground.
Damon reached for the sphere with an open palm, however, his fingers were just an inch shy from touching it when the sphere suddenly shot away into the distance at absurd speeds, evading capture at the last instant.
The earth rippled like water and exploded, and a localized shockwave spread out from his form as Damon’s body came to a stop the instant he missed.
"It’s this fast?" He muttered, completely indifferent to the shattered terrain and rising debris around him. Instead he was contemplating the speed at which the red sphere shot away.
"So this is what he meant by the spheres won’t just wait for us to catch them." Damon mused. "I’m guessing their speed would probably be relative to how strong and fast their pursuer is." He deduced.
A wide grin then split Damon’s lips. "What an ingenious move, this is going to be fun." He muttered. Perhaps this phase would give him the push to go all out for the first time since he broke through past the Theta+ rank.
However, his grin soon froze for a split moment, before widening once more.
"What a pleasant surprise?"
An invisible glass or perhaps mirror appeared behind him, and Damon vanished inside, the next moment, he reappeared from the window of the tallest building in the ruined city, now overlooking the entire city.
"What do we have here?" He muttered looking at the person before him with a sly smile.
------------
All around the pocket realm, the youths raced after the red spheres, each desperately trying to secure a sphere. But there were some who weren’t the least bit bothered. There was still a lot of time left after all, and why did they have to toil and chase after the spheres when others could do it for them. In the end, they’d just have to take it off someone else’s hand.
Among such individuals were Ivis and Mayura. Even so far away from each other, the twin’s brain seemed to be wired in the way.
Not only them, Kaal and Anastasia also seemed to be thinking the same way. Why should they bother themselves? If a sphere came their way, fine, but they wouldn’t actively go looking for it.
Namor though, had different thoughts. Namor didn’t even care about the spheres, he just wanted to fight someone strong.
So while others chased after spheres, Namor raced through landscapes, looking for a strong person to clash with, not caring about any opponent he deemed weak, and slaughtering most beast that tried to attack him.
Apart from Namor, another person who had different thoughts was Alistair. Alistair wanted to acquire two spheres, one for himself, and another for Elsa, so he couldn’t get complacent, he had to get active.
He didn’t worry about the rest of his friends, he was confident they could secure their own spheres. Though, maybe he could help some of them get their spheres, especially, Rose, Anastasia, Delilah, and even Sasha, that way he’d be able to get closer to them.
The thought brought a smile to his lips.
On the other hand, in the vast forest she had been dropped into, Rose came face to face with Isolde Von Sanguine.
