Chapter 392: Inside the Field
Zarek changed his approach.
The Rift Cage with exits inside the null field was degraded — the compromised exits reducing the cage’s effectiveness. He needed exits outside the field. But exits outside the field required the cage’s geometry to put Bovac’s movement through rifts that sent him to positions outside the null field’s radius — and Bovac was inside the radius, the field moving with him wherever he went.
The cage’s exits needed to be far enough from Bovac’s position that the null field’s radius didn’t reach them.
More than ten feet from Bovac.
Bovac was inside a cage whose rifts were at his field’s edge.
If Zarek moved the cage’s exits to thirty feet from Bovac — well outside the null field — the cage rifts’ exits would be clean. But the cage rifts’ entries were also at the field’s edge, compromised on the inside. Bovac moving through a compromised entry arriving at a clean exit thirty feet away would put him thirty feet from his current position — outside his own null field’s current location.
But the null field moved with Bovac.
Bovac arriving at the clean exit thirty feet away would have the null field arrive there with him — the field was his, attached to his body, and wherever his body went the field went.
The cage wasn’t about trapping Bovac in a static location.
It was about forcing him to move in ways that made his null field less controllable.
Zarek opened the Rift Cage with exits thirty feet away — the clean-exit configuration, the entries at Bovac’s field boundary, the exits well outside the null field’s current radius.
Bovac stood inside the cage.
He could move in any direction and the nearest rift entry was at his field’s boundary — compromised on the inside, degraded intake, his slow movement able to push through rather than being pulled into the rift.
He chose not to move.
Stationary inside the cage — the null field at full radius, the grey distortion steady, the four cage rifts at his boundary unable to pull him through because the degraded intake couldn’t overcome his stationary position’s stability.
The cage couldn’t move him while he stood still.
Zarek looked at the stationary Bovac inside the four-rift cage.
At the null field surrounding him.
At the cage that required Bovac to move to function and a Bovac who had stopped moving.
He stepped through a rift — repositioning to eight feet from Bovac, outside the null field’s radius.
He needed to give Bovac a reason to move.
He opened a rift with the entry directly in front of Bovac’s face — not at the field boundary, at zero distance from Bovac’s body, the rift opening from the inside of the null field itself rather than from the outside.
The rift opened inside the field.
Fully inside — the grey distortion surrounding the dimensional tear completely, the null field’s interference not at the boundary but throughout the entire rift structure.
The rift shimmered — severely compromised, the null field’s effect on the rift’s spatial mechanics from inside significantly greater than the boundary effect had been. Not closed. Not functional. The rift present as a tear but not operating as a portal — the passage blocked, the dimensional connection unable to establish cleanly inside the full null field environment.
The rift sat in front of Bovac’s face as a visible but non-functional tear.
Bovac looked at it.
At the compromised rift in front of him.
He reached out and touched it.
His hand passed through the rift’s opening — the physical contact, his hand entering the dimensional tear, his fingers on the other side of the non-functional portal.
He pulled his hand back.
Looked at Zarek.
His expression carried something — not smug, the specific calm of someone who had tested what the fight needed them to test and found what they expected to find.
He began walking again.
Toward Zarek.
The Rift Cage at his boundary — his slow advance carrying him toward the cage’s entry points, his deliberate pace the same it had been when the fight began.
Zarek stepped through a rift — repositioning further away, maintaining the distance between himself and the advancing null field.
Bovac kept walking.
The arena was large.
But it was finite.
The crowd was watching the geometry — the grey distortion advancing slowly across the arena floor toward a fighter who was repositioning through rifts to maintain distance, the specific contest of an unstoppable slow advance against a perfectly mobile retreating opponent.
"He can retreat indefinitely," the announcer said. "The rifts let him reposition instantly within thirty feet. Bovac can never close the distance if Zarek keeps stepping away." He paused. "But Zarek can’t win by retreating. The rifts need to reach Bovac to do something. And inside the null field — the rifts don’t fully function."
Zarek opened a rift with the entry at the null field’s outer boundary — the entry point at exactly ten feet from Bovac’s body, the field’s edge rather than the field’s interior.
The entry was half-inside, half-outside.
Half-functional.
He stepped through a rift to appear directly beside the entry point — his body outside the field, his right hand extending to the entry’s outside edge.
He pushed through the half-functional entry.
Not his whole body — his right hand, the rift-opening hand, extending through the compromised entry’s outside-field portion and attempting to open a new rift from inside the null field while his body remained outside it.
His right hand was inside the null field.
The rift-opening ability in his right hand — the spatial mechanics that produced dimensional tears — operating inside the null field’s radius.
The rift tried to open from his right hand’s inside-field position.
The null field interfered — the intentionality-stripping affecting the rift’s formation from inside the field, the dimensional tear trying to establish itself in an environment that was stripping ability intentionality as fast as it was being applied.
A partial rift.
Not fully open. Not closed. A flickering tear in the space inside the null field, present for fractions of a second before the null field stripped the intentionality that held it open, then re-forming as Zarek reapplied the ability, then stripped again.
A cycling partial rift — flickering in and out of existence inside the null field at the rate Zarek’s ability could reform what the null field was stripping.
Bovac felt the flickering rift inside his field.
He looked at Zarek’s hand extending through the boundary entry.
He reached toward Zarek’s extended hand.
Physical contact — Bovac reaching for Zarek’s wrist with his own hand inside the null field, the physical strike that the null field couldn’t protect against because physical force bypassed nullification entirely.
Zarek pulled his hand back through the boundary entry.
His hand cleared the entry point.
The boundary entry collapsed — the rift closing as Zarek’s contact with it was removed, the dimensional tear dissolving.
Bovac’s reaching hand arrived at the space where Zarek’s hand had been.
Empty.
He stood at his field’s boundary — the null field surrounding him at full radius, one step having carried him to the cage’s entry point.
The cage entry was right in front of him.
He was one step from entering it.
He stopped.
Both fighters at a specific impasse — Zarek unable to reach inside the null field effectively, Bovac unable to reach Zarek as long as the rifts maintained the distance, the cage unable to move a stationary Bovac, Bovac unable to advance without Zarek retreating.
Zarek looked at Bovac standing at the cage entry.
At the hand that had reached for his wrist.
Physical contact bypassed the null field.
Physical strikes were unaffected.
He wasn’t going to win by keeping distance from a fighter whose ability didn’t work at range and whose only path to victory was closing distance.
He stepped through a rift — the entry behind him, the exit directly beside Bovac, inside the null field.
He appeared at Bovac’s side — inside the grey distortion, the null field surrounding him now, his ability’s rifts inside the field operating at the same compromised level as everything else inside the radius.
He swung.
A physical punch — no rifts, no dimensional mechanics, just a fighter’s right fist aimed at Bovac’s jaw.
Bovac’s physical response was immediate — his own hand coming up to block, the physical exchange happening at close range inside the null field where neither ability was fully functional.
The block caught most of the punch.
Zarek’s fist glanced off the block and caught Bovac’s cheekbone.
Real impact — physical, unaffected by the null field, the hit landing clean.
Bovac went back one step.
The null field collapsed — the fast backward step, even a single step, reducing the full-radius field to the minimal personal radius, the grey distortion shrinking from ten feet to three feet as the quick movement disrupted the field maintenance.
Three feet of null field.
Zarek was outside it.
His rifts were fully functional.
