Ultimate Dragon System: Grinding my way to the Top

Chapter 393: The Geometry of Zero

Bovac stabilized.

He had gone back one step — the null field collapsed from ten feet to three feet by the fast movement, the grey distortion now barely beyond his own body’s surface. He slowed himself immediately, the deliberate pace reasserting, the field beginning to rebuild from three feet outward toward its full radius as his movement slowed.

Three feet. Four. Five.

The rebuild was slower than the initial establishment — the field’s expansion from collapsed state taking more time than maintaining it from full radius.

Zarek was outside the shrinking field.

His rifts were fully functional.

He opened four rifts — the Rift Cage configuration, entries arranged around Bovac’s position, exits thirty feet away. But this time the entries were outside the collapsed field’s current radius rather than at its boundary.

At three feet the field wasn’t reaching the cage entries.

Zarek stepped through a rift — appearing at one of the cage entries’ positions and then immediately stepping through the entry himself, testing whether a fully functional entry outside the field sent him to a clean exit at thirty feet.

He arrived at the clean exit.

Fully functional — the rift having operated outside the null field entirely, the entry and exit both clean.

He stepped back through — appearing inside the cage beside Bovac.

Physical punch — right hand again, the same principle, the physical contact that bypassed the null field entirely.

Bovac blocked — faster this time, his block arriving before the punch rather than during it, the adaptation present.

The block caught the full punch.

No contact with Bovac’s body.

Bovac swung back — his own physical punch, right hand, aimed at Zarek’s chest inside the collapsed field’s minimal radius.

Zarek opened a rift in front of himself — entry in front of his chest, exit thirty feet behind Bovac.

The punch entered the rift entry.

Traveled through the dimensional tear.

Exited thirty feet behind Bovac.

Bovac’s fist appeared thirty feet behind his own body — the punch having passed through the rift, the physical force redirected through dimensional space to arrive at a position behind the fighter who had thrown it.

Bovac felt the absence — the punch having traveled and arrived somewhere other than the target it was aimed at, the follow-through of the swing landing on nothing.

He had punched thirty feet behind himself.

The crowd made the noise they made when something genuinely surprising happened — the specific sound of people watching physics behave incorrectly and understanding why.

"The rift redirected his own punch," the announcer said. "Physical strikes bypass the null field. But the rift isn’t the null field — the rift is space. And physical force passing through a rift travels through space to wherever the exit is."

Bovac looked at his extended fist — thirty feet behind his body, visible at the rift’s exit point, his arm not thirty feet long but the punch’s force having traveled through dimensional space to that location.

He withdrew his arm from the rift’s exit.

The field was at five feet.

Rebuilding.

Zarek punched again — right hand, inside the collapsed field’s current radius, the physical contact.

Bovac blocked again.

Zarek opened a rift — entry beside Bovac’s left ear, exit at his own right hand’s position.

Bovac’s block had been aimed at Zarek’s right hand.

The block passed through the entry beside Bovac’s ear.

The block arrived at Zarek’s right hand position — Bovac’s own blocking arm appearing at Zarek’s right hand’s location through the rift, the blocking motion having traveled through dimensional space to arrive at the thing it was blocking from thirty feet away.

Bovac’s arm was through the rift.

Entry beside his ear. Exit at Zarek’s right hand’s position thirty feet away.

His arm was in two places simultaneously — one end beside his head where the entry was, the other end thirty feet away where the exit was.

Zarek grabbed Bovac’s arm at the exit point.

Both hands — gripping the arm that had extended thirty feet through the rift, using the grip to control the arm from the exit’s position while Bovac’s body was at the entry’s position.

He pulled.

Bovac felt the pull — his arm being controlled from thirty feet away through the rift, the force arriving at the exit point and transmitting back through the dimensional space to his body.

He tried to pull his arm back.

Zarek held it.

The null field was at six feet — still rebuilding, still short of the cage entries’ positions.

Zarek opened a new rift — the Rift Cage entry directly in front of Bovac’s body while his arm was being held through the other rift, the cage’s entry point at the null field’s current six-foot boundary.

The entry was outside the six-foot field.

Fully functional.

He released Bovac’s arm.

Bovac pulled his arm back through the rift — the arm returning from the exit to his body through the dimensional tear, the arm retracting.

The retraction motion pulled him forward.

One step — the arm’s retraction having momentum, his body following the arm’s pull back through the rift’s entry point as the arm came back.

He stepped through the cage entry.

His body passed through the fully functional entry — the null field at six feet hadn’t reached the entry point, the rift operating cleanly, Bovac’s own retraction momentum carrying him through the dimensional tear.

He arrived at the clean exit thirty feet away.

The null field arrived with him — the grey distortion relocating to his new position, the field rebuilding from whatever size it had been when he arrived.

He was thirty feet from where he had been.

The cage’s geometry had been set so that the exits were arranged around a specific point — and the exit Bovac had been pulled through was pointed at the entry of another cage rift.

He was facing the entry of the second cage rift.

He stopped.

The null field at six feet — not fully rebuilt, still expanding from the collapse and the movement.

He was facing a cage entry that was outside his six-foot field.

Zarek stepped through a rift — appearing at Bovac’s side, outside the six-foot field, his ability fully functional.

He opened a rift entry directly in front of Bovac — the exit at Bovac’s back.

Bovac moved sideways — away from the entry, his slow movement preserving the field’s rebuild, the step small.

The null field was at seven feet.

Zarek opened a rift entry at Bovac’s new position — tracking the slow sideways step, the entry appearing in front of Bovac’s relocated position with the exit at his back.
