Ultimate Dragon System: Grinding my way to the Top

Chapter 391: Rift and Null

The arena reset.

Class 1 Fight 6.

Zarek of Aurelius against Bovac of Dravenfall.

The Aurelius sections gave Zarek the home warmth — the particular sound of a home crowd with a fighter in a fight, the investment real and immediate. The Dravenfall sections gave Bovac their heavy territorial response — the announcement rather than the celebration, the sound they had been producing for their fighters all tournament.

Zarek walked out of the Aurelius tunnel.

He moved with a specific quality of awareness — not the reading-gaze quality of Varen’s shatterpoint preparation or the observational stillness of Ken, something more spatial, the awareness of someone who was always measuring the distances between things. The space between himself and Bovac’s tunnel. The space between the arena walls. The geometry of the floor in relation to the ceiling. He crossed the arena floor with his hands loose at his sides — both hands, the right and left each serving different functions in the ability’s operation.

He reached his position.

His right hand made a small gesture — a flicker, barely visible, a rift opening and closing in the air beside him in less than a second. Testing. Calibrating. The dimensional tear present for a fraction of a second and gone.

The Aurelius sections gave him everything.

Bovac walked out of the Dravenfall tunnel.

The null field was already visible.

A grey distortion surrounding his body — not dramatic, not glowing, just a visible quality of wrongness in the air around him, the space within his ten-foot radius looking slightly different from the space outside it. Like looking at the world through a thin grey filter that had been applied only to that specific sphere of space and nothing beyond its edge.

He moved slowly.

Deliberately — not because he was cautious but because fast movement collapsed the field to a minimal personal radius, and the field was the thing, the ten-foot radius was the weapon, and he had no reason to collapse it before the fight required it.

He reached his position.

The grey distortion settled around him — full radius, ten feet of nullification field extending outward from his body in all directions, the visible distortion present and steady.

The crowd looked at the field.

At the specific quality of the space inside it — the arena lighting slightly muted within the radius, the colors slightly flattened, the air carrying the quality of somewhere that energy behaved differently.

"Zarek," the announcer said. "Class 1, Aurelius Academy. His ability — Rift."

A murmur from the crowd.

"Zarek can open dimensional rifts — tears in space that function as instantaneous portals between two points he designates. He opens the entry with his right hand and the exit with his left. Anything passing through the entry arrives immediately at the exit regardless of distance." He paused. "Offensively — he can redirect incoming strikes through dimensional space, opening an entry rift in front of an attack so it exits behind the opponent. Defensively — opening a rift in front of himself so attacks pass through harmlessly. And as mobility — stepping through a rift to reposition instantly within thirty feet." Another pause. "His most dangerous technique — Rift Cage. Multiple rifts arranged around an opponent so any movement sends them through a rift and back into the cage from a different angle."

He paused once more.

"His weakness — rifts take a fraction of a second to open. A fast enough attack arriving before the rift opens hits normally. And maintaining multiple rifts simultaneously drains him."

Then —

"Bovac," the announcer said. "Class 1, Dravenfall Academy. His ability — Null."

A different quality of murmur — the grey distortion already visible having given the crowd the visual before the description arrived.

"Bovac generates a field of nullification energy surrounding him in a radius of up to ten feet. Any ability that enters the null field loses its special properties while inside it — fire becomes ordinary heat, compressed aura becomes standard pressure, magical energy disperses." He paused. "The nullification strips the ability’s intentionality — the energy becomes ambient rather than directed. Physical strikes are unaffected. Only ability-generated effects are nullified within the field."

He let that land.

"His weakness — the null field requires Bovac to be stationary or moving slowly to maintain at full radius. Fast movement collapses it to a minimal personal radius. And physical strikes bypass nullification entirely."

The crowd looked at both fighters.

At Zarek’s right hand — the rift-opening hand.

At Bovac’s grey field — the distortion surrounding him at full radius.

The specific question in the stands was visible in the crowd’s noise — a murmur that carried the quality of people working through something rather than reacting to something. The rift was spatial. The null field stripped energy-based ability effects. Was a rift energy — or was it space?

If it was space — the null field couldn’t affect it and the rifts operated normally inside the radius.

If it was energy — the field stripped the rift’s intentionality and the portal closed inside the null field.

Nobody knew. Including, possibly, both fighters.

The referee raised a hand.

Zarek opened a test rift — small, deliberate, the entry point in the air beside his right hand and the exit point in the air beside his left hand five feet away. Not aimed at Bovac. Aimed at nothing. Just testing the rift’s function at range.

It opened cleanly.

He closed it.

Bovac watched.

He hadn’t moved — the null field at full radius, his position stationary, the grey distortion steady around him.

The referee’s hand dropped.

Zarek opened a rift immediately — entry point in the air between himself and Bovac at twenty feet, exit point at Bovac’s left side at ten feet outside the null field’s radius.

He stepped through the entry.

He appeared at the exit — twenty feet crossed in the instant of the step, his body arriving at the position his left hand had designated.

At ten feet outside the null field.

The rift had worked — the dimensional step functioning exactly as it always functioned, the spatial mechanics unaffected by the null field at range.

He opened another rift.

Entry at the null field’s edge — the rift’s entry point touching the boundary of the grey distortion.

He watched the entry point.

The rift opened at the boundary.

Half of it inside the field. Half outside.

The portion inside the field — the grey distortion surrounding the rift’s edge at the boundary — shimmered. Not closed. Not fully functional. The rift’s spatial tear at the boundary showing the specific quality of something operating at reduced capacity rather than full function.

The portion outside the field — clean, fully operational, the dimensional tear present and stable.

The null field wasn’t closing the rifts.

It was affecting them at the boundary — the intentionality-stripping touching the rift’s edge where the field’s radius intersected the dimensional tear, the rift partially compromised at the contact point.

Zarek filed it.

The null field couldn’t close rifts. But it affected them at the boundary — a rift opened with its exit point inside the null field would have the exit point compromised. Something passing through a rift and arriving inside the null field would arrive in a compromised state.

He stepped back to his original position — opening an entry behind him and stepping through to where he had started, the repositioning taking less than a second.

Bovac had watched all of it.

He began walking forward — slowly, the null field maintained at full radius, the grey distortion moving with him across the arena floor.

At full radius walking pace, the field maintaining its ten-foot sphere as he advanced.

He was covering distance.

Slowly. But covering it.

The crowd was quiet — the specific quiet of people watching a situation develop rather than explode, the fight’s opening phase carrying something different from the action of most exchanges.

"Bovac is walking him down," the announcer said. "The null field moves with him. He doesn’t need to be fast — he needs to get the field to Zarek’s position. The rift’s exit points inside the field are compromised. Zarek can’t use the rifts for offense inside the null field’s radius. And at ten feet of radius — when Bovac reaches Zarek, the field is already there before contact."

Twenty feet between them.

Zarek opened a Rift Cage.

Four rifts simultaneously — entry points arranged in a rough square around Bovac’s position at the null field’s outer edge, exit points arranged so that passing through any entry would send Bovac through the rift and back into the square from a different angle.

Four rifts at the null field’s boundary.

Each one half-inside, half-outside the grey distortion.

Bovac walked into the cage.

The first entry rift at the boundary — he walked through the grey distortion’s edge toward it, his slow advance carrying him into the rift’s entry point.

The rift tried to catch him.

The boundary-compromise affected the entry — the null field’s interference at the rift’s edge producing a degraded intake, the dimensional tear not closing but not pulling with the full force a rift outside the field would have pulled with.

Bovac pushed through it.

Not through the rift — through the distorted edge, his slow movement carrying him past the compromised entry rather than being pulled into it, the null field’s effect on the rift boundary having degraded the entry’s intake force enough that his deliberate forward movement could overcome it.

He was inside the cage.

The null field was with him — the grey distortion still surrounding him at full radius, all four cage rifts at the outer edge of the field rather than fully inside it.

Zarek repositioned through a rift — a step, entry behind Bovac, exit in front of him, the repositioning carrying him to the opposite side of the cage from where he had been.

Bovac turned to track the repositioning.

Slowly — the full-radius maintenance requiring slow movement, the turn deliberate rather than fast.

The Rift Cage was still active around him.

But the cage’s rifts were at the field’s boundary — half inside, half outside, the entries compromised by the grey distortion’s interference.

Zarek needed to know if a fully outside entry led to a fully inside exit.

He tested it — opening a rift with the entry outside the field entirely, the exit inside the null field at Bovac’s position.

The entry opened cleanly outside the field.

The exit — inside the grey distortion — showed the same boundary shimmer the half-inside rifts had shown, but more severe. The exit point inside the field was more compromised than the boundary-touching exits had been.

Anything going through the clean entry and arriving at the inside-field exit would arrive degraded.
