Chapter 614: The Kingdom of Lynocyes
"I see. Alright, I think I’ve got a good enough idea of this world now," I nodded thoughtfully.
The three captives had just finished telling us about this world, and it looks like we’re in a pretty messy situation here. We were currently on a small island continent called Nilren, with only two nations in it.
The nation we were currently in is called the Kingdom of Lynocyes, a nation of humans, and it spanned across the west half of the continent.
As for the east half, there was the nation known as the Vruxtrus Empire, and it was a nation of Demons.
The Kingdom of Lynocyes was ruled by a King, the citizens divided between Nobles and Commoners. But the King doesn’t hold all the power in governing the nation, there’s also a church, the Church of Lyon.
As for the Demons, they don’t follow any religion.
The two nations had once been allies, but about fifty years ago, the Church of Lyon declared that they had received a message from their God, stating that Demons are heretical creatures and must be wiped out.
That triggered a war between the two nations, which has been at a stalemate for the last couple of decades, which both nations controlling about half the continent.
As for the technology level of this world, it’s pretty underdeveloped and medieval, especially compared to our world.
There aren’t any motorized vehicles, travel is done using horse-drawn carriages.
Surprisingly, Monsters don’t exist in this world, Demons are considered to be a different race. There are apparently also Elves, Demi-Humans and some other races, but only humans and Demons live in the continent of Nilren.
The rest of the world has minimal contact and interaction with Nilren, so these three don’t know a whole lot about this world outside of Nilren. And I didn’t bother asking, since it’s not particularly relevant to us.
"Huh, based on everything they said, it seems like the Demons are the good guys in this war," Remarked Aria in bemusement.
"Yeah, sure seems that way," I nodded, before inquiring as I glanced at the Knight, "What do the Demons of this world look like? Do they look like her at all?"
He glanced at Luxuria as I gestured to her, before shaking his head and responding...
"No, not quite. They don’t have glowing bodies. Physically, the only difference between them and us is that they have horns, wings and tails, and the whites of their eyes turn black when they cast Magic. Other than that, they appear human."
He’s been especially cooperative among the three captives. The Noble’s been answering our questions pretty reluctantly, and the Mage was pretty resistant at first, but a bit of pain and fear got him talking.
"Any other differences?" Aria asked him.
"Yes, they have much longer lifespans. We humans live to about eighty to a hundred years, but Demons live anywhere between four to five hundred years. In terms of power and physical prowess, we’re more or less even, but Demons are capable of regeneration, they can survive almost any injury so long as their hearts and heads are intact."
Huh, so they’re not immortal like the Demons we fought were.
Alright, think that covers everything we need to know about this world. They gave us a rundown of the geographical layout of Nilren, and confirmed that we can find maps of the continent pretty easily.
"Let’s move on to the next topic now, shall we? Tell us how the Magic of this world works. Since I paralyzed everyone in the throne room before wiping them out, I didn’t get to see any of this world’s Magic in action. So, explain how it works," I remarked, before glancing at the Mage.
"Our Magic can be divided into three distinct categories. Elemental, Ritual and Spiritual. Elemental Magic is innate, each individual possesses one type of Elemental Magic, one of Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Lightning, Ice, Sound and Plant.
Ritual Magic is done using scrolls made of a special parchment. Magic formula is inscribed onto the scrolls, and requires a catalyst to be activated. Simple ones, such as Healing Scrolls, only require a small amount of Mana to activate, but more complex ones would require a greater cost.
And finally, Spiritual Magic involves summoning Spirits, which can be used to either fight alongside the Summoner or boost the Summoner’s Elemental Magic by temporarily fusing with the summoned Spirit."
Spirits, huh? Interesting...
"Elemental Magic seems simple enough, but I’ve got questions about the other two. First, about Ritual Magic...I’m guessing it’s safe to say that we were summoned using Ritual Magic. What was the catalyst used as the activation cost? And more importantly, can the effect be reversed? In other words, can you send us back to our world using Ritual Magic?" Inquired Aria with a grimace.
"W-Well, uh...to answer your first question, we used sacrifices. Five thousand of our expendable Commoners, a thousand for each summon. And as for your second question...in theory, yes, that should be possible, but we have not prepared such a ritual. The Hero Summoning Ritual is incredibly complex, a reversal ritual would likely be equally as complex. It would probably take years to create one."
"You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me. So, we’re stuck here, then?" I responded with a growl.
"Does a way back to our world not exist at all?" Frowned Aria in dismay.
"Yes, that’s right," Nodded the Mage, before gasping sharply as I rapidly reached out and grabbed his throat, tightening my grasp as I met his gaze.
I felt it, he triggered my passive lie detection!
"What are you hiding? Tell me, or I’ll crush your fucking throat," I uttered venomously, eliciting a choked wheeze.
"Hm? Oh, that’s right! A few years ago, the Heroes we summoned were led into a trap by the Demons and disappeared! The Demons claimed they sent those Heroes back to their original world!" Spoke up the Knight, before averting his gaze as the Noble glared at him.
"Well, now...looks like we’ve finally got a lead on how to get back home," I remarked, feeling a wave of relief and encouragement, letting out a quiet sigh.
I was really dreading the prospect of having to live out the rest of my life in this world, but now it looks like we won’t have to do that.
"I guess we know where our next stop is, after we regroup with the others," Added Aria with a smile, a lot of the tension on her face gone.
