Chapter 763: The Apex Predators
The golden sparks of lightning laws danced across the dark stone walls of the isolated mountain cave. Li Yu stood in the center of his array formation and pushed his physical vessel through another grueling cycle of refinement. He was no longer just channeling the volatile energy through his pathways. He was attempting to weave the raw destructive properties of the lightning directly into his bone marrow.
He took a deep breath and released a concentrated burst of energy.
He vanished from his spot and reappeared near the boulder blocking the cave entrance. The concussive boom of his arrival shook the mountain peak and a spiderweb of deep cracks spread across the solid bedrock beneath his boots.
He dropped his aura and wiped a thick layer of sweat from his face. The hybrid movement technique was becoming more stable but the Qi drain was still incredibly high. It was a move for close quarters combat but not a sustainable method for long distance travel.
He walked over to the corner of the cave and checked his concealment array plates. The metal was humming quietly but the pile of spirit stones he had left to power them was reduced to dull gray dust. He swept the dust away and replaced the power source with a fresh pile of shimmering stones.
A full week had passed since his last visit to the rogue settlement. The isolated training was doing wonders for his foundation but the silence of the cave was beginning to feel oppressive. He needed to know if the political theater of the realm had resolved itself or if the Domain Kings were still tearing the world apart.
Li Yu was feeling a sense of excitement that he didn’t think he would get. Without him realizing it, he had grown a bit addicted to the developing story of the war. He pushed the heavy boulder aside and stepped out onto the jagged peak.
The sky above the distant borders was still stained a violent bruised purple. Unnatural clouds of toxic green gas and crimson energy clashes illuminated the horizon. The grand war was far from over. That much was clear.
The atmosphere in the rogue settlement had shifted once again.
The suffocating panic from the previous week was gone. It was replaced by a tense and bloodthirsty anticipation. The dirt streets were packed with battle hardened mercenaries and opportunistic scavengers who were sharpening their weapons and repairing their armor.
Li Yu walked into the dingy central tavern and claimed his usual spot. He ordered a cup of bitter root tea and extended his senses, tuning into the loud and overlapping conversations filling the room.
The dominant narrative was clear. The usurper was losing.
"Venrik is on his last legs." A large beetle warrior laughed. "The usurper is finally being crushed."
"It was only a matter of time." A scarred centipede mercenary agreed. "He is fighting a two front war against the most powerful queens in the realm. Queen Calyptra has him bogged down in the outer mist and Queen Myrmira is mobilizing her loyalist forces to strike his exposed rear lines. He is completely surrounded."
Li Yu took a sip of his tea and listened closely.
The mercenaries were placing bets on exactly which queen would deliver the killing blow. The consensus was that Venrik had vastly overestimated his own brilliance.
"He got too overconfident." A thin mantis rogue stated. "His grand scheme succeeded perfectly. He captured the throne and built a shadow army. But the success blinded him. He thought his force could crush the Eclipse Court. It was a tactical blunder."
"Are we sure about that?" An older one eyed ant veteran asked. "Venrik orchestrated a plot that trapped a Domain King and stole an empire without a proper siege. A man with that level of intellect does not just blindly charge into a slaughter. He must have something up his sleeves."
"What could he possibly have?" The beetle warrior scoffed. "Magic reinforcements? Emperor Xerxis already retreated. The Hive Empire is gone. Venrik is entirely alone facing the combined might of two supreme empires. No hidden trick can save you from that."
Li Yu sat back in the shadows and pondered the veteran ant’s words.
He agreed with the cautious veteran. Li Yu had seen the brutality of the shadow tapestry trap. He saw the depth of Venrik’s patience. The idea that the usurper had simply miscalculated his own strength felt wrong. It was too simple for a man who played chess with empires.
But Li Yu kept his thoughts to himself. He finished his tea, left some spirit stones on the table and returned to his mountain cave.
If Venrik was truly on his last legs, the war would be over soon. Li Yu decided he would spend another week in isolation and was focusing entirely on his body refinement. He would let the conflict burn itself out.
The next seven days passed in a blur of golden sparks and agonizing physical conditioning. When Li Yu finally emerged from his cave and returned to Split Rock, he expected to hear tales of Venrik’s execution and the division of his stolen empire.
Instead, he walked into a tavern paralyzed by terror.
The boisterous mercenaries from the previous week were sitting in stunned silence. The air in the room was heavy and suffocating. No one was drinking and no one was placing bets.
Li Yu ordered his tea and sat in his dark corner, immediately realizing that the board had just undergone a catastrophic upheaval. A group of exhausted scouts covered in deep lacerations and toxic burns were slumped over the central table. They were sharing their horrific intelligence in hollow and broken voices.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
"The alliance is broken." The lead scout whispered while staring blankly at his empty hands. "The Eclipse Court is collapsing."
"What happened?" A merchant demanded. "Did Venrik reveal a hidden weapon?"
"Worse." The dragonfly choked out. "Queen Myrmira betrayed them."
The tavern remained deathly silent as the patrons struggled to comprehend the words. Li Yu narrowed his eyes, his mind racing to process the tactical implications.
"It was an ambush." The scout continued. "Queen Myrmira mobilized her loyalist forces and deployed her flying warships right to the edge of the battlefield. Queen Calyptra went to meet her, expecting a coordinated pincer strike against Venrik. But the moment Calyptra lowered her guard, the Ant Queen struck."
The scout described the horrific scene. Queen Myrmira had unleashed some sort of weapon at Queen Calyptra’s back.
"The Moth Queen was tricked." Another scout added. "We saw it from the high ridges. The Ant Queen is not acting on her own free will. Her golden eyes were clouded with a sickly purple light. She is under some sort of manipulation that even the elite moth assassins could not detect."
Li Yu felt a cold chill run down his spine. The brilliant masterstroke became perfectly clear. Venrik never lost control of the Ant Queen. The rescue operation orchestrated by the Eclipse Court was another trap.
Venrik had utilized the special earth rock to do more than just drain his sister’s foundation. He had actively corrupted her mind somehow and bound her will to his own. He deliberately allowed the elite moth agents to break her out of the Bastion, knowing they would deliver the ultimate weapon directly into the heart of their own command structure.
"Queen Calyptra is heavily injured." The dragonfly scout whispered. "The ambush damaged her foundation. Her elite forces are still holding the line but they are fighting a losing battle. They are facing the combined might of Venrik’s rogue army and the Aegis Legion."
The tavern patrons erupted into hushed whispers.
The narrative had shifted entirely. The mercenaries who had called Venrik a fool a week ago were now praising him as a peerless but dark genius. His schemes and plans ran deeper than the underground aquifers. He had orchestrated a scenario where his enemies gladly stole their own destruction.
"The Eclipse Court is finished." The older one eyed ant veteran stated. "Venrik is going to claim his second empire before the month is over. No one can stop him now."
Li Yu sat in the dark and fully agreed with the assessment. Queen Calyptra was severely injured and her forces were being ground into dust by two Domain Kings. The Nine Paths Moth was powerful but even the supreme guardian beast could not hold off the combined might of the Ant Queen and the usurper indefinitely.
Venrik had won.
Just as the tavern patrons began to accept the terrifying reality of Venrik’s supreme reign, the heavy wooden doors of the tavern shattered inward.
The doors exploded into wooden splinters as a heavily armored beetle mercenary crashed into the room. He was missing three of his arms and his thick carapace was scorched black. He crawled across the floor and gasped for air. His compound eyes were wide with disbelief.
"The sky!" The beetle screamed while pointing a trembling claw toward the open doorway. "The sky is bleeding gold and green!"
The patrons rushed to the shattered doors and looked out toward the horizon. Li Yu stood up and joined them. The distant horizon was no longer a bruised toxic purple. It was illuminated by flashes of blinding golden light and deep vibrant green energy.
"What is happening?" The dragonfly scout demanded, hauling the wounded beetle off the floor. "Did the Nine Paths Moth unleash its final domain?"
"No!" The beetle gasped while coughing up a spray of dark blood. "It is the Hive! Emperor Xerxis has returned!"
The tavern fell into stunned silence.
"He brought the swarms back?" The ore refiner asked.
"Not the swarms." The beetle shook his head. "He brought the Royal Brood."
A collective gasp echoed through the room. Even Li Yu felt his eyes widen slightly. It was a legendary force that Emperor Xerxis had not deployed in a very long time. It was an army composed entirely of his own direct bloodline, his elite sons and daughters.
"They descended from the clouds on organic warships." The beetle continued and his voice was full of awe. "They did not attack the Eclipse Court. They bypassed the outer mist completely and smashed directly into the flank of Venrik and the Ant Queen!"
The sheer absurdity of the tactical shift paralyzed the tavern.
"Why?" The mantis rogue asked. "Xerxis hates the Moth Queen! They have been bitter enemies for centuries! Why would he deploy his most precious army to save her?"
"No one knows." The beetle wheezed. "But the Emperor is not fighting alone. That is what broke Venrik’s lines. Xerxis brought someone else with him."
"Another guardian beast?" The one eyed ant veteran frowned.
"No. At least not his current appearance." The beetle shuddered. "A human. A large human. He wields a giant mace and laughs like a maniac. He is fighting on the same level as the Domain Kings!"
Li Yu nearly choked on his own saliva. Others that were around him looked at him since he was the only human here but seeing how small he was, they quickly went back to the beetle.
The description was unmistakable though. It was Garrick. The Great Sage had joined the war.
Li Yu quickly tried to piece the bizarre logic together. Xerxis had treated Garrick to lavish feasts, premium nectar wine, the finest hospitality the Hive Empire could offer and probably most important the women. If Xerxis asked for his help in a grand brawl, Garrick would absolutely agree just to pay back the hospitality and make it an even two against two fight.
"It is a two against two battle now." The beetle laughed hysterically. "Emperor Xerxis and the large human against King Venrik and Queen Myrmira. The shock of the ambush paralyzed the usurper’s forces. The Moth Queen’s generals saw the opening and pushed back with everything they had. The Nine Paths Moth is flooding the battlefield with toxic illusions once more."
The tavern patrons stared at the wounded beetle and were completely unable to process the scale of the chaos. Venrik, the peerless genius who had orchestrated the perfect move was currently being blindsided by an ancient royal army, a rival Emperor and a laughing human with a giant mace.
"But why?" A wealthy merchant asked again, voicing the question burning in everyone’s mind. "Why did Xerxis attack Venrik? What does the Hive gain from saving the Eclipse Court?"
No one in the tavern had an answer.
The political game had devolved into pure madness. The alliances made no sense, the betrayals were layered in deceit and the motivations of the apex predators were completely hidden from the common realm.
Li Yu stepped back from the crowd and slipped out through the shattered doorway. He walked out into the dirt streets of Split Rock and looked toward the blinding flashes of light tearing across the distant sky. He let out a long slow breath. He activated his lightning movement and blurred into a streak of golden sparks.
