Myriad Rivers to the Sea

Chapter 762: The Shifting Tides

Li Yu sat in the suffocating darkness of his mountain cave. The only illumination came from the violent arcs of lightning dancing across his skin.

He was pushing his physical vessel to the absolute limit. Integrating the raw and untamed power of lightning into his core foundation was a grueling and agonizing process. The energy seemed like it possessed a chaotic will of its own. It surged through his meridians with the force of a raging river, tearing at the internal pathways and scorching his bones.

He gritted his teeth and endured the pain. He refused to let the volatile energy dictate his progress. He summoned his Life laws and utilized the vibrant green Qi to chase the golden sparks. The Life laws acted as a restorative balm.

They flooded his damaged pathways knitting the torn tissues back together and reinforcing the structures of his muscles. The cycle of destruction and rebirth was continuous. He broke his body down with the lightning and built it back up stronger with the Life Qi. This was in addition to his body slowly integrating the laws into his very being at all times, albeit slowly.

A full week passed in this isolated cycle of agony. Li Yu regretted ever embarking on this path. He should have just let his Devouring Abyssal Leviathan Physique continue on its own. The process was slow but it wasn’t painful like this. But Li Yu wanted to make more progress so he persisted for as much as he could.

The stone walls of his hidden sanctuary were black and scorched from the volume of excess energy he released. He practiced channeling the lightning directly into his legs, replacing the spatial folding of his Void Step with a hybrid technique. He wanted to combine the instantaneous teleportation of the Void with the raw physical speed and destructive momentum of the lightning.

He stood up and executed a test movement.

A blinding flash of golden sparks illuminated the dark cave. Li Yu vanished from his spot and appeared at the opposite wall a fraction of a second later. The kinetic force of his arrival cracked the solid bedrock beneath his boots. It was not a pure spatial jump. He had physically crossed the distance but he moved with such terrifying velocity that the ambient air shattered around him and produced a sharp concussive crack.

He let out a long breath and wiped the sweat from his brow. The technique was highly taxing on his Qi reserves but it gave him a devastating new option for close quarters combat. It didn’t solve the initial problem he set out to solve, it in fact was even more taxing. That’s just how it went some times, not everything went the way you thought it would.

He needed a break from the intense physical strain. He also needed to know which parts of the realm still existed. He approached the heavy boulder blocking the cave entrance and pushed it aside. He dropped the concealment array and added a fresh pile of high grade spirit stones to the power source.

He stepped out onto the jagged mountain peak and looked out over the vast neutral zones. The sky in the far distance still possessed an unnatural bruised purple hue indicating the massive war was still raging.

He pulled his dark traveler cloak tight over his shoulders and utilized his new lightning infused movement. He became a blur of dark fabric and golden energy as he was traversing the treacherous mountain terrain with effortless speed.

He arrived at the rough settlement of Split Rock.

The atmosphere in the rogue town had deteriorated significantly over the past week. The panic had settled into a grim and suffocating despair. The dirt streets were packed with wounded mercenaries, starving refugees and desperate merchants who had lost their entire caravans to the massive armies clashing across the realm.

Li Yu walked into the dingy central tavern. The air inside was thick with the smell of cheap ale, dried blood and unwashed bodies. He moved to his usual spot and ordered a cup of bitter root tea.

The news regarding the war was dire. The Eclipse Court was losing ground constantly.

"The toxic mist is failing." A scarred centipede mercenary muttered to his companions at a nearby table. He was wrapping a blood soaked bandage around his missing lower arm. "Queen Calyptra cannot hold the borders forever. The Moth Empire is caving in under the weight of a two front war."

"It is a miracle they lasted this long." A battered worker ant replied. "King Venrik is pushing his rogue army deep into the outer forest ring. He is leading the charge himself. His scythe limbs are tearing through the elite moths like dry leaves."

"And Emperor Xerxis is flooding the opposite boundary with his swarms." A thin mantis rogue added his voice trembling with awe and terror. "The Hive Empire is devouring the outer territories. To fight Venrik on one side and Xerxis on the other is pure suicide."

Queen Calyptra was fighting a desperate defensive war. She had personally taken the field against Venrik, locking the usurper into a massive clash of Domain Kings to stall his rogue army.

To handle the invasion from the Hive Empire, she had deployed the ultimate weapon of the Eclipse Court. The Nine Paths Moth had taken action.

The rumors described the Nine Paths Moth as a supreme guardian beast possessing power that rivaled the Domain Kings themselves. It was an ancient entity that used poisons and lethal illusions. The guardian beast was currently holding the line against Emperor Xerxis and turning the dense forests into a nightmare labyrinth of shifting realities and toxic spores.

"Only the Eclipse Court could fight such a battle." The scarred centipede stated. "Any other empire would have shattered in three days. Queen Calyptra has the deepest foundation in the realm but even she will fall eventually. You cannot fight two Domain Kings, their armies and win."

The tavern patrons nodded in grim agreement. They were simply waiting for the inevitable collapse of the Moth Empire and the subsequent slaughter that would follow. Then the heavy wooden doors of the tavern slammed open.

The loud crash silenced the entire room. A group of exhausted information brokers stumbled inside. They wore the dark leathers of the neutral zone scout guilds and their insectoid features were covered in a thick layer of pale dust.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

The lead scout, a sleek dragonfly kin, collapsed onto the nearest table and was gasping for air.

"The Aegis Legion!" The dragonfly choked out, grabbing a mug of ale from a stunned merchant and draining it in one gulp. "The Aegis Legion has erupted!"

"What are you talking about?" The centipede mercenary demanded standing up and looming over the exhausted scout. "The Bastion is secure. Venrik left his garrison to hold the territory while he invaded the moths."

"Not anymore." The dragonfly gasped a manic grin spreading across his face. "Queen Myrmira is free!"

The entire tavern erupted into a deafening roar of overlapping voices. Li Yu placed his tea cup down on the wooden table. His eyes narrowed in pure fascination. The board had just flipped for a second time.

"How?" A wealthy beetle merchant shouted over the chaos. "Venrik trapped her with a supreme array! He drained her foundation dry and locked her in the deepest abyss! How did she escape?"

"She did not escape on her own." The dragonfly scout laughed, the sound sharp and hysterical. "Special agents of the Eclipse Court broke her out! Queen Calyptra sent her most elite shadow assassins deep into the Aegis Legion. They bypassed Venrik’s garrison, infiltrated the prison and shattered the array!"

The revelation sent massive shockwaves through the crowded room. The patrons began arguing and debating the monumental news. They then quickly started sharing wild theories and tactical analysis at the top of their lungs. Everyone was all of a sudden an old veteran general of thousands of battles.

"That was her plan the entire time!" The mantis rogue cheered while slamming his fists onto his table. "Queen Calyptra was never trying to push forward against Venrik! She was acting as a distraction! She bogged his main army down in a war of attrition just to buy her elite agents enough time to pull off the rescue!"

The gossip mutated instantly as the sheer scale of the manipulation set in.

"Are they friends?" A young rogue ant asked. "The Moth Queen and the Ant Queen? Did they forge a secret sisterhood in the shadows? Why else would Calyptra risk her entire empire and her supreme agents to save a rival ruler?"

"Do not be stupid, boy." A cynical ore refiner scoffed from the bar. "Domain Kings do not have friends. They are apex predators. They only have assets and liabilities. The Ant Queen and the Moth Queen have projected nothing but cold indifference toward each other for centuries. It was a purely tactical move."

"Tactical or not it worked." The scarred centipede mercenary shouted. "Venrik is a dead man walking."

Li Yu listened to the arguments and found himself agreeing with the cynical ore refiner.

Whether Queen Calyptra and Queen Myrmira shared a secret bond or a bitter rivalry did not matter in the grand scheme of war. Freeing the true ruler of the Aegis Legion was the most devastating move Calyptra could make. It weaponized Venrik’s own stolen empire against him. Some of the forces he absorbed will turn to go back to their queen. The loyalists that were shattered before will regroup and form behind their queen now.

The dragonfly scout confirmed the devastating results of the rescue.

"Queen Myrmira is furious." The scout continued as his voice carried over the tavern. "She rallied her surviving loyalist armies and the hidden supporters who refused to bow to the usurper. She is currently purging the Aegis Legion of every single one of Venrik’s forces that was left behind."

"And once her territory is secure?" The beetle merchant asked.

"She is already marching her main forces." The scout replied. "The Ant Queen has summoned her royal vanguard. She is pushing directly toward Venrik’s location. She is going to crush his army against the borders of the Moth Empire."

Some tavern patrons cheered. The usurper who had arrogantly declared war on the realm was now caught in a lethal trap of his own making. Queen Calyptra was bogging him down from the front and the enraged Queen Myrmira was marching on his exposed rear lines.

Li Yu took a sip of his now lukewarm tea.

The brilliance of the scheme was staggering. Queen Calyptra had absorbed the combined punishment of two massive armies, sacrificed her own outer territories and bled her own soldiers dry just to set up a victory condition.

But there was still one massive unknown variable on the board.

"What about Emperor Xerxis?" Li Yu thought to himself, staring at the wooden grains of the table. "The Hive Empire is still flooding the opposite boundary. Even if Venrik is crushed the Moth Empire still has to deal with the endless swarms."

As if answering his silent question a second wave of scouts entered the tavern an hour later and brought another piece of explosive intelligence. The new arrivals were merchants who operated along the borders of the Hive Empire.

"Xerxis is gone." A heavy set beetle merchant announced while dropping his massive travel pack onto the floor. "The Emperor of the Hive retreated."

The tavern fell silent once again and was trying to process the rapid shifts in the balance.

"He fell back?" The centipede mercenary asked. "Why? He had the Nine Paths Moth pinned. He was winning there."

"He saw the war would not be won." The beetle merchant theorized. "With Queen Myrmira freed and the Aegis Legion mobilizing, the entire dynamic changed. Xerxis is an opportunist. He strikes when the prey is wounded. He likely realized that getting caught between a victorious Ant Queen and a surviving Moth Queen was a bad tactical position. He recalled his swarms and retreated back into his own empire."

The patrons debated the reasoning but the result was undeniable. The Hive Empire had officially withdrawn from the conflict.

"That frees up the Nine Paths Moth." The mantis rogue realized. "The supreme guardian is no longer tied down."

"Exactly." The beetle merchant nodded. "The rumors say the Nine Paths Moth has already shifted fronts. The guardian beast is heading straight for Venrik to join Queen Calyptra on the main battlefield."

Some of the tavern erupted into a chaotic celebration. The patrons drank and cheered, placing massive bets on how many days the usurper had left before his head was mounted on a royal pike.

Li Yu finished his tea and stood up from his dark corner.

He paid as usual and left. He slipped through the celebrating crowd and walked out the heavy wooden doors of the tavern.

He stepped into the dirt streets of Split Rock and looked up at the sky.

The grand political theater of the insectoid realm was a terrifying and awe inspiring spectacle. The Domain Kings played with empires like the way children played with wooden blocks. They sacrificed millions of lives, orchestrated decade-long schemes and manipulated their rivals with precision.

Venrik believed his hidden army and his stolen throne made him untouchable. He believed his brute force and his calculated ambush gave him the right to rule.

But Queen Calyptra weaponized Venrik’s own arrogance against him, using his obsession with conquest to blind him to the knife moving in the shadows. Li Yu walked out of the settlement and activated his lightning infused movement. He blurred into a streak of golden sparks tearing across the jagged landscape of the neutral zones.

He felt a deep validation for his decision to remain isolated.

He was incredibly strong for his cultivation level. He possessed supreme laws and a terrifying physical foundation. But compared to the sheer scale of the Domain Kings, he was still just a single drop of water in a raging ocean. If he had stepped onto that battlefield he would have been crushed beneath the shifting tides of their grand strategies.

He arrived at his isolated mountain peak and pushed the heavy boulder aside. He stepped into his dark scorched cave and reactivated the concealment array, erasing his presence from the world once again.

The usurper was about to face the combined wrath of two supreme queens and an ancient guardian beast. The realm was going to shake with the force of their final clash.
