Myriad Rivers to the Sea

Chapter 764: The Pride of Emperors

The passage of time in the isolated mountain cave was marked only by the shifting colors of the sky and the steady depletion of spirit stones powering the concealment array.

Li Yu spent his days focused on his foundation. The chaotic energy of the realm felt distant, muffled by the deep earth metal plates and the thick bedrock of the peak. He did not dwell on the grueling physical conditioning or the intricate weaving of lightning laws into his bone marrow. He simply existed in a state of quiet continuous progression.

But his newfound addiction to the geopolitical theater demanded to be fed.

A week after the sky bled gold and green, Li Yu pushed the heavy boulder aside. He stepped out onto the jagged cliff and observed the distant horizon. The violent energy flashes had ceased. The toxic clouds were slowly dissipating and replaced by a lingering stillness that felt far more ominous than the actual combat.

He pulled his dark cloak over his shoulders and blurred into a streak of golden sparks.

He arrived at the dingy tavern in Split Rock. The patrons were speaking in hushed, bewildered tones. Li Yu claimed his dark corner, ordered a cup of bitter root tea and listened once again.

"Emperor Xerxis broke the board and then just walked away. Can you believe that?!" A scarred centipede mercenary muttered. "I have never seen a military campaign end like that."

"He demolished the usurper." A large beetle warrior agreed. The beetle was polishing a jagged broadsword with a piece of rough leather. "The Royal Brood deployed from their organic warships and tore right through Venrik’s vanguard. The large human with the mace crushed three Law Integration commanders by himself. Venrik lost over half his total forces in a single afternoon."

"So Venrik is dead?" A young rogue ant asked.

"No," the beetle shook his head. "He is retreating. His remaining aerial armada fell back to the borders of the Aegis Legion. He is on the defensive now."

Li Yu took a sip of his tea. The outcome of the ambush was exactly as devastating as he had predicted. Emperor Xerxis and Garrick had shattered Venrik’s momentum. But the next piece of intelligence left Li Yu completely baffled.

"Xerxis captured Queen Myrmira." A dragonfly scout announced from the bar. "He used an artifact to bind the Ant Queen while she was still under Venrik’s manipulation. He locked her in a reinforced flying prison."

"And then he executed her?" The rogue ant pressed.

"No." The scout replied but his voice was full of confusion. "He just locked her up. And then he recalled the Royal Brood. The Hive Empire fleet turned around and flew back to their own territory. Xerxis completely backed off."

The tavern fell quiet as the patrons tried to process the tactical decision.

"He had the usurper by the throat." A thin mantis rogue hissed in frustration. "He crushed the army. He captured the manipulated Ant Queen. He could have swept through the Aegis Legion and claimed the entire empire. Why did he leave?"

"Domain Kings play a different game. You wouldn’t understand." An older ant veteran sighed. "Perhaps his own borders were threatened. Perhaps the human demanded to leave. We will never know."

"What about the Eclipse Court?" The beetle warrior asked.

"Queen Calyptra survived the betrayal but she is heavily injured." The scout answered. "Her royal guard escorted her back to the capital to heal. The Nine Paths Moth is currently holding the front lines alone and is projecting a barrier of toxic illusions to keep Venrik from pushing any further."

Li Yu sat in the shadows and stared at the swirling tea leaves in his cup.

He was intensely interested in what Xerxis was thinking. The Emperor of the Hive was an opportunist who hated the Moth Queen. He deployed his most precious army to save her, crippled her greatest enemy and then simply walked away without asking for territory or tribute. It didn’t make any sense. No one understood and that was why it was so devastating to Venrik. A completely unexpected move.

Li Yu felt a strong pull of curiosity. He knew where the Hive Empire was. He had the honored guest token. He could travel there, find Garrick and ask exactly what had transpired. He tapped his finger against the wooden table and then firmly shook his head.

He decided not to head back there. Wandering into the Hive Empire right after the Emperor deployed his elite bloodline in a confusing, realm altering battle was a terrible idea. Curiosity killed the man and in the cultivation world, it usually annihilated the soul as well.

He finished his tea, left his payment and returned to his mountain peak. Another seven days dissolved into the quiet rhythm of the isolated peak.

Li Yu continued his silent progression and let the grand affairs of the insectoid realm play out without his interference. When the week concluded, the urge to check the board returned. He replaced the spirit stones powering his array and traveled back to Split Rock.

This time, he walked into a tavern echoing with harsh and mocking laughter.

The fear and bewilderment from the previous visits were completely gone. The mercenaries and scavengers were drinking heavily, slapping the wooden tables and treating the war like a comedy performance.

Li Yu ordered his tea and sat in his corner and was waiting for the punchline.

"The usurper has lost his mind!" The large beetle warrior roared with laughter, spilling ale down his chitinous armor. "His army is battered, his grand scheme is in ruins and his pride is shattered. Do you know what he did?"

"He issued a challenge!" The mantis rogue answered while wiping tears of mirth from his compound eyes. "King Venrik sent a formal, realm-wide decree to the Hive Empire. He challenged Emperor Xerxis to a one on one duel! He called the attack disgraceful and demanded Xerxis face him in honorable combat!"

The tavern erupted into fresh peals of laughter.

Li Yu raised an eyebrow. Venrik, the man who spent years plotting an elaborate trap to defeat his own sister, was suddenly demanding honorable combat. It was the display of wounded arrogance.

"How did Xerxis respond?" The older ant veteran asked, a rare smile touching his mandibles.

"He refused!" The dragonfly scout cheered from the bar. "The Emperor broadcasted his reply for the whole world to hear. He said fighting one on one was not his style. He explicitly stated he already had the upper hand and only a complete fool would throw away a tactical advantage just to satisfy an enemy's wounded pride."

"Xerxis does not care about face at all when it comes to battle. He only cares to win. Everyone knows that." The beetle warrior chuckled. "He crushed the usurper's army and then called him a fool in front of the entire realm. Venrik must be choking on his own venom."

Li Yu drank his tea and for once appreciated the brutal pragmatism of Emperor Xerxis. Face and martial honor were illusions used to manipulate the weak. In a war for survival, the only thing that mattered was victory.

"So Venrik is hiding behind his borders now?" The young rogue ant asked.

The laughter in the tavern suddenly died down. The dragonfly scout cleared his throat and his expression turning serious.

"No." The scout said. "In a surprise turn, Venrik did not bunker down. He gathered his battered ships and his surviving forces. He turned his aerial armada around and went after the Eclipse Court once again."

A murmur of confusion swept through the room.

"He is attacking the moths again?" The centipede mercenary frowned. "With a broken army? Queen Calyptra is healing but the Nine Paths Moth is still guarding the boundary. The guardian beast will tear his depleted forces apart."

"Many think he will be crushed." The scout agreed. "The dominant theory among the guilds is that Venrik has chosen to die in battle rather than live with the humiliation. And Xerxis is just sitting back in his territory. He is waiting for the usurper to break himself against the guardian beast so the Hive can clean up both empires with zero effort."

Li Yu sat back and processed the new development. The tavern patrons believed Venrik was committing martial suicide out of embarrassment. But Li Yu remembered the cold and calculating nature of the trap that captured Queen Myrmira.

A man who orchestrated a multi layered coup did not commit suicide because someone insulted him. If Venrik was turning his battered army around to attack an ancient guardian beast, he was doing it because he believed he could win.

Li Yu left the tavern feeling a deep sense of unease. The board had not settled. The usurper was preparing to play another card.

A third week passed.

Li Yu did not wait for the full seven days to conclude. The unease festered in his mind, driving him to cut his isolated routine short by two days. He dropped his concealment array and blurred across the neutral zones. Quickly arriving at Split Rock as the three suns reached their zenith.

He walked into the central tavern and instantly felt the oppressive weight of despair.

The mocking laughter was gone. The casual bets were forgotten. The tavern was packed with refugees and mercenaries but no one was speaking above a hollow and terrified whisper. Li Yu ordered his tea as normal. The tavern keeper handed him the ceramic cup but his eyes darted nervously toward the open doorway.

Li Yu took his seat and reached out with his senses.

"He had another trick! I told you he did!" A broken voice murmured from the center table. It was the dragonfly scout. "The usurper had another trick up his sleeves."

"What did he do?" The large beetle warrior asked.

"He engaged the Nine Paths Moth." The scout explained while staring blankly at the wooden table. "The guardian beast deployed its supreme domain. It flooded the sky with toxic spores and soul tearing illusions. It should have melted Venrik’s vanguard in seconds. But Venrik did not even flinch."

The patrons leaned in, terrified but unable to look away from the impending disaster.

"Venrik revealed another treasure!" The scout whispered. "It was not a weapon or an array. It was an ancient artifact designed specifically to damage the soul. He deployed it the moment the guardian beast struck."

Li Yu felt his grip tighten on his ceramic cup.

"The artifact pierced the domain and struck the Nine Paths Moth." The scout continued. "It injured the ancient beast. It crippled it instantly. The guardian beast shrieked. The sound was terrifying."

"Is the beast dead?" The older ant veteran asked.

"No." The scout shook his head. "The Nine Paths Moth is an entity of the Eclipse Court. It possesses its own deep foundation. It utilized a series of life saving treasures to break the artifact's hold, save its own life and escape the battlefield. But it suffered severe injuries in the process. It fled back toward the capital."

A suffocating silence blanketed the tavern.

Li Yu reviewed the different forces and their conditions. Queen Calyptra was heavily injured from the Ant Queen's betrayal and was currently recovering in her stronghold. Now, the Nine Paths Moth, the ultimate guardian of the Moth Empire was severely injured and retreating.

"Both pillars of the Moth Empire are greatly injured." The thin mantis rogue stated, voicing the grim reality aloud. "The elite assassins are without their supreme leaders."

"And Venrik?" The beetle warrior asked.

"Venrik is pushing forward." The dragonfly scout replied. "His army is battered and his numbers are depleted but nothing stands in his way. Nothing left can stop him. He breached the outer mist. His flying warships are heading straight for the capital."

The tavern patrons stared at the floor and realized that the usurper’s grand ambition was not a delusion. It was an inevitable reality. Li Yu finished his tea in silence. A person with such schemes and depth was terrifying to have in power.

The depth of Venrik’s preparation was terrifying. The usurper had not just planned to capture his sister. He had planned for the attack on the Moth Empire as well. He had hoarded specific artifacts designed to counter the ultimate weapons of his enemies. He possessed a tool to drain a Domain King, a tool to manipulate a mind and a tool to cripple an ancient guardian beast. The only thing that seemed to have caught him by surprise was how Xerxis reacted.

Venrik was a bottomless pit of calculated malice.

Li Yu stood up and left the tavern. He walked out into the dirt streets of the rogue settlement and looked toward the distant horizon. The bruised purple sky was giving way to a dark and encroaching shadow. The Eclipse Court, the empire that had been ranked first in the realm, was facing total annihilation. Li Yu activated his movement technique, leaving a trail of golden sparks as he sped back toward his mountain.

The world was changing rapidly. The apex predators were tearing the established order into bloody ribbons. Li Yu knew that observing the chaos was educational but getting caught in the blast radius was fatal.
