A quiet end
Pandora was in a buzz when I arrived as Jack consolidated his forces in a single place, Heroes pass. It was located near thousand cuts at the edge of what was now being called "the Eridium blight". A dark places with smog overcast skies and a massive glowing purple scar across the face of Pandora visible easily from space. It was the location most of Hyperion's Eridium came from due to the sheer abundance there but also a place considered highly dangerous to be near from the radiation leaking from it. -
Raw and even refined Eridium gave off small harmless amounts of radiation that didn't bother even the most delicate organisms but in such an amount that radiation was quite high, more than enough to mutate or straight up cancer things to death. Heroes pass was merely what Hyperion chatter called this dig site of theirs though once I started to find the Eridian statues and remnants there as I stormed the place I began to understand it was an intentional choice. This must have been the way to the vault Jack had been after for some time. -
It was almost poetic really that the last refuge the man had was the same as his failed ambition laid. To the victor the spoils and that vault would be mine. I wasn't taking Hyperion as there was no point, the company was doomed to die. Even now the other companies and even my own were ripping it apart piece by piece and in the end all it will be left with is a name and memories. The company broke two galactic laws and was free game for plunder now, them's the rules corporations played by.-
I'd count my own chunk of the assets seized soon enough but for now I walked through the heavily fortified mining and militarized site leisurely. The soldiers fired rockets, turrets and just plain old guns at me but it all accomplished nothing by making me itch a bit. My own shots and use of powers on the other hand reaped lives like wheat being harvested. The energy forcefields were blasted open and a trail of death and finality followed me. About an hour later I reached the vaults area that was a large open aired volcanic pit with massive Eridian statues lining it's sides and a broken and Uneven stone path to the vaults archway in the distance. -
The sound of flowing bubbling lava rumbled in the background as I approached Jack who was sitting on a stone block staring at the broken archway blankly. He barely even acknowledged my presence when I walked to stand right at his side.
"It's all wrong you know." he said in a tired broken tone "I was going to bring order to this planet with the Warrior, a veritable alien god. You were always going to be the biggest obstacle we would overcome, Angel and I. The only one who could get in our way. And you did too. Killed her, my baby girl, ruined everything." he said quietly.
"She's not dead." I said calmly.
His head snapped to stare at me in shock and I continued.
"She assumed that being set free would kill her when she asked me to rescue her. Normally she'd be right. You'd doomed her to a short life with a chain around her throat in any other scenario. She was lucky however that I knew exactly how Eridium dependency functioned and could counteract it. I had to devour an entire planet to do it but she's now stable and free to recover. She's free and even ageless due to how I had to treat her." I said calmly and he just turned to stare at the vault with a lost expression.
Perhaps some pang of clarity took him or he chose to go out on his own terms but the man pulled out a gun, looked me in the eyes and passed on a message before pulling the trigger under his chin. An unremarkable end for a man who flew too close to the sun. I drained his lifeforce reducing his body to ash as his mask clanged to the ground.-
I walked over to the indentation on the ground that was supposed to open the vault and noticed an oddity while I was there.
The circular Eridian symbolled area around that indentation told a different story. This place wasn't a vault, not truly. It was a weapons command center. The vault key was both the identification and power source of some sort of Eridian weapon. It was a command key, the nuclear launch codes as it were. It made what the man had said make sense. He wanted to use this weapon to forcefully wipe out anyone he found undesirable on the planet.-
I was curious what the weapon may be but chose to leave it be for now and take the mans mask to his daughter. What happened next was none of my business as Pandora will take care of itself, it always does. I left the planet just as quietly as I arrived with none alive to tell that I was ever here today. Oh sure there'd be theories once it was discovered what happened but unless someone asked there'd be no way to know for certain. The only person who'd know besides me was Angel who had to settle her own feelings after I gave her the mask.
