Chapter 2414 - 671: Who Is the Mole? (Part 3)
As An Yiqing had expected, three days later, Newt called. His voice over the phone was very weak. After being tormented by the poison for three days, he was already on the verge of death.
"Miss An, I agree to your terms. Please save me, I don’t want to die..."
An Yiqing laughed, a cold smile. She thought he could endure a few more days, but he couldn’t even last three.
"Tonight at seven, I’ll come to your place, and we’ll have a good talk."
That evening, An Yiqing arrived punctually in Newt’s bedroom. When Newt woke up and opened his eyes, he found a woman standing silently by his bedside. Startled, the days of torment combined with the sudden fright caused him to nearly faint.
An Yiqing reached out and lightly slapped him several times, and Newt immediately felt much better. Only then did he notice who this woman was. Instantly, his expression changed.
"An, Miss An..."
Newt’s current condition was dire. After returning that day, he had a fearful night’s sleep. The next day, he felt pain all over his body, dizzy and unable to do anything. Not only that, it felt like the nerves in his brain were being drilled, the pain driving him almost insane. He dared not speak out, secretly calling in a family doctor, but they found nothing wrong. Helpless, he went to a highly confidential hospital and received only a diagnosis of neuropathic pain.
Newt was nearly mad, and the medication prescribed by the doctor not only didn’t help, but made the pain even worse. By the next day, his brain was in constant excruciating pain, and even sleeping became a luxury. Furthermore, his limbs began to tremble violently, his body gradually numbing until he felt nothing at all. Newt truly believed he was finished.
After enduring for three days, with his condition worsening, he had no choice but to compromise and laboriously dialed An Yiqing’s number.
"So, Mr. Newt has thought it through?" An Yiqing asked.
Newt nodded with effort, "Miss An, save me... I don’t want to die..." Compared to the family’s future, his own life was more important!
An Yiqing smiled, knowing that the first step of the plan to place Emory in power had succeeded.
That evening, An Yiqing gave Newt the first antidote and told him what to do next. Thoroughly defeated, Newt had no mind to resist, so naturally, whatever An Yiqing instructed, he did.
A few days later, a batch of jewelry from the Durant family intended for the queen was mysteriously stolen while being transported back from abroad. When Edith’s father, the Durant Family Head, learned of this, he was furious and immediately ordered a covert investigation. However, despite deploying vast manpower and resources, they found nothing, not even discovering who had stolen the jewelry.
With the jewelry gone and the queen’s birthday approaching, he was left with no choice but to switch to another batch of jewelry in an attempt to muddle through.
At the queen’s birthday banquet, Durant, Meg, and Edith enthusiastically presented the jewelry. Queen Freyno, having seen much precious jewelry, felt indifferent towards it. Nevertheless, the care and intention from Edith’s family made her quite satisfied.
The jewelry was presented, and the queen slowly browsed through it. Suddenly, her eyes fixed on the last pearl necklace, and her expression darkened.
Everyone exchanged puzzled glances, not understanding why the queen’s expression suddenly changed. Durant followed the queen’s gaze and, upon seeing that pearl necklace, looked bewildered.
"Mother, what’s wrong?" Meg asked cautiously.
Queen Freyno said nothing, picking up the pearl necklace and placing it before Durant.
"Durant, I am very disappointed in you."
Durant looked bewildered, staring at the necklace for a while, and then his face gradually changed.
A large portion of the pearls in the necklace were actually fake! Top-notch imitations!
How could this be? He had clearly taken it from his family’s vault, so why was it fake?! Queen Freyno valued perfection most, and the appearance of a fake necklace at her birthday banquet was akin to a bomb!
"Y-Your Majesty the Queen, this must be someone’s trickery! You must believe me, my devotion to Your Majesty the Queen is unmatched by anyone!" Durant broke out in cold sweat, hastily pledging his loyalty.
Edith and Meg, upon understanding, also changed their expressions.
