Claire, clearly trying to maintain peace, turned to William and said, "William, we're in a tough spot right now. Please, just let everyone have a share of the food, alright?"
"No, it's not yours to take," William said, a smirk forming on his face. "But since it's Claire asking, I suppose I'll make an exception." 'This food... consider it a gift, a parting token before death.' His words dripped with an eerie kindness that felt hollow.
Claire paused, momentarily taken aback. "That's... surprisingly generous."
William leaned in slightly, his expression suddenly warm, completely at odds with his earlier demeanor. "What? You think because you're the leader, I'm supposed to be friendly? Well, that's not really how it works."
Claire was silent for a moment, then nodded. "On behalf of everyone here, thank you," she said, her voice steady though she seemed unsure of William's intentions.
"No need to thank me," William waved her off with a dismissive hand. "It's all for you, Claire. Now, if you'll excuse me, Gil, Terry—let's go."
Jill, watching the exchange closely, raised an eyebrow. "That's not like you. All the food? Just like that? I have a feeling this isn't just about Claire." There was a distinct edge of sarcasm in her voice.
William's eyes twinkled with mischief. "You'll understand soon enough. Everything has a price, Jill."
