Chapter 54: Always
As Remo drove Abby home, the car filled with a heavy silence. Trying to lighten the mood, he started a conversation, "Abby, maybe we could grab something to eat on the way back. It’s been a long day."
Abby’s responses remained curt, her mind preoccupied with concern for her father. "I’m not hungry, Remo," she replied, her tone colder than usual.
Remo understood the gravity of the situation but wanted to offer comfort. "I know it’s tough, Abby. Your dad is in good hands, and we’ll be back with him first thing in the morning."
Abby sighed, staring out of the car window. The passing streetlights cast shadows on her face, highlighting the weariness in her eyes. Remo decided to let the conversation rest, focusing on the road as they made their way through the quiet night.
As they arrived home, Remo parked the car and turned off the engine. The warm glow of the porch light greeted them as they stepped out of the car and walked to the front door. Abby’s steps were slow, her thoughts still consumed by her father’s condition.
Remo unlocked the door and held it open for her, his expression filled with concern. "Let’s get you inside, Abby. You need some rest," he said gently, trying to offer some solace.
Abby managed a weak smile, grateful for his support despite her somber mood. They entered their familiar home, the familiar scent and comfort of their shared space enveloping them. Remo guided her to the living room, where they settled onto the couch together.
Even in the dim light, Remo could see the exhaustion etched on Abby’s face. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close in a silent gesture of solidarity and comfort. They sat in silence for a while, the only sound was the soft ticking of the clock on the wall.
In the quiet of their home, Abby finally allowed herself to lean into Remo’s embrace, finding a brief break from the weight of her worries.
