Chapter 175: A New Male Guard (2)
Madeline stood tall and straight, perfectly dressed in a black bodyguard uniform with a sword strapped to her hip. The fabric of her shirt was stretched over her chest, hiding any indication of her gender, and to complete her dress up, a black helmet was handed to her, making it safer for her hair to stay hidden, and the young lady stood at attention in front of Alaric, demonstrating a salute, and then she broke into a smile.
"Is this how it feels to be a bodyguard?" She asked Alaric with great enthusiasm, feeling somewhat powerful in the bodyguard clothing she was putting on. What’s more fascinating, the bodyguard uniform came with a pair of equally black pants that added to her liking.
She had disguised herself as a male bodyguard to escort the King to Cassian’s private cell so she can finally see him.
Since his area was restricted, Alaric had to put up this charade by making Madeline dress as a bodyguard so she could use it as an opportunity to see her husband. It was the only option he could think of considering the fact that he was the one who brought the restricted rule, but breaking his own rules behind everyone else’s back sounded too much of an irony, an irony that had already begun.
Immediately, Madeline sealed her lips when two other strange guards suddenly joined them, their heads bowed in greeting as they paid His Majesty their respect. After exchanging a few conversations that were not to Madeline’s hearing, Alaric took the lead.
As they walked down the stone corridor with three of them flanking behind Alaric, Madeline’s dark orbs scanned the shadows for any signs of danger, trying her best to play the role of a fearless bodyguard. The torches on the walls cast a flickering light across the stone corridor, making her feel like they were walking through a never-ending tunnel.
She believed the area was indeed private because there was no sight of anyone here, except for the guards she ran into as they entered three specific doors that brought them here. From the way the guards at the door stared at her, Madeline knew she would have been named an imposter if Alaric’s presence hadn’t made them drop their guard.
After what felt like twenty minutes of walking, Madeline felt her energy return as they finally reached the cell, and one of the guards stepped forward to unlock the door with a heavy iron key.
Cassian laid on the mattress that had been kept for him, staring at the ceiling with a bored gaze, but when his ears twitched upon hearing the sounds of approaching footsteps, he closed his eyes briefly, barely having the strength to converse with anyone, but then the clanking of iron and the door opening told him that whoever was here clearly had the intention of ruining his peaceful sleep.
