Chapter 1740 - 1739: Get the Hell Out Here
The results of the military exercise have already been reported to the higher-ups, and they are urging them to return quickly.
The incident of Commander Qin being hit by an unidentified bullet during the exercise has been reported to the top leadership, but there’s no specific response on how to proceed yet.
Unless something unexpected happens, the response should arrive tomorrow.
Lying in the tent, unable to sleep, he eventually threw on his military jacket and stepped outside to smoke.
A warrior on guard duty noticed him and saluted, "Commander, you haven’t rested yet?"
"No, I couldn’t sleep, just stepping out for a walk." Zhang Jianguo replied. "Feeling tired? If you’re sleepy, go catch some rest. I can stand guard for a while in your place."
"No, no, no! I’m not tired! Commander, I just noticed that Commander Qin and Captain Zhao haven’t slept either. They’re over there smoking." The young warrior said.
"No wonder you’re asking if I haven’t rested! Alright, go check on them!" Zhang Jianguo adjusted his jacket and headed toward the more open area nearby.
Qin Jian and Zhao Dong were lying flat on the grass, hands behind their heads, gazing up at the deep blue sky sprinkled with stars.
Suddenly, they heard faint footsteps nearby. Sharing a quick glance, they leapt up, pulled out their pistols from their belts, kneeling on one leg ready to fire. "Who’s there?"
"Get the hell out!" Zhao Dong growled.
"What the hell are you yelling about? Who’s your ’the hell’?" Zhang Jianguo emerged step by step from the woods.
Under the vast starlight, Qin Jian finally saw Zhang Jianguo’s face and lowered his gun.
After taking a closer look, Zhao Dong quickly holstered his weapon with a cheeky grin, "You’re my ’the hell’?"
"I don’t have a son as big as you!" Zhang Jianguo snorted, slapping away Zhao Dong’s outstretched hand meant to support him. "Get away from me! Seeing you annoys me!"
Zhao Dong: "..."
"Zhao Dong! From now on, watch your words! This time, the Commander is letting it slide, but if there’s a next time..."
Before Qin Jian could finish, Zhang Jianguo jumped in, "If there’s a next time, I’m chopping this kid into firewood!"
"Got it!" Zhao Dong quickly agreed.
"What were you chatting about?" Zhang Jianguo found a patch of grass to sit on, a cigarette clamped between his fingers as he smoked and asked.
"Commander Wu’s situation!" Qin Jian frowned tightly. "I don’t know how the anti-drug unit is progressing. Since they’ve already tracked down the traffickers, I wonder if they can take them down in one swoop."
"Hard to say!" Zhang Jianguo slowly exhaled smoke rings. "This time, we lost the exercise unfairly! Commander Wu getting hit by that bullet was downright frustrating."
"Exactly! But what can we do? Even if the Red Team won, it’s an unearned victory!" Zhao Dong grumbled, clearly unhappy.
"Commander, have we dug up any criminal record on that guy we captured?" Qin Jian asked.
"Not yet! The guy’s still in custody!" Zhang Jianguo had already inquired about the situation. "He’s clean, no criminal record! However, his presence here doesn’t add up. We must interrogate him thoroughly to prevent any military secrets from being leaked!"
"Damn it! How was this military exercise managed? Every random guy managed to sneak in! Is our security just for show?" Zhao Dong said irritably.
