Chapter 433: Mutated Fish
After checking the fish in countless other spots, Lu Zhen finally determined that the fish was edible.
Even the fish which had mutated were still edible.
It was just that it had a slightly different taste from the normal fish.
But this was discovered later after cooking.
Once Lu Zhen was sure that the fish was edible, he brought his second brother and assistant back to their building.
Just as they climbed back into the eighth floor through the window they had used as a door, Juan Ke and Xu Man met them there.
"Commander Lu, how is the fish? Is it okay for us to consume?" Xu Man asked when he saw the large basket of fish the three were moving from the boat.
"Yes, the fish may have mutated, but they don’t contain the zombie virus, so they can be eaten without worry. However, I suggest cooking them properly to kill any bacteria that may cause other diseases due to the dirty water." Assistant Yao answered on behalf of his boss.
He knew that if it were Lu Zhen who answered, he would just answer with a yes, leaving the two with more questions than answers.
"That’s a great thing. At least now people have more food. Moreover, they can supplement their bodies with fish. After so long, our bodies can finally get some protein." Juan Ke said with a smile.
They had been eating processed food for a while now and it wasn’t very different from instant noodles.
Even though there were dried fruits and vegetables, it couldn’t compare to fresh food.
So, these fish really came at a great time.
"Then, can you help us with the boat to go out and catch some for dinner? I would rather boil a fish tonight than eat another processed meal." Juan Ke added.
"I also want to catch a few fish for dinner. Even though we have enough to eat and have some vegetables grown by the wood superpower users, I still feel sorry for my child and parents. They are either too young or too old and without proper nutrition, their health hasn’t been great. I am afraid that something bad will happen sooner or later. So, I can’t pass up this chance." Xu Man also lamented at the plight of his family.
"You can take the boat, just make sure you return it intact." Lu Zhen said with a nod of his head.
"Thank you so much Commander Lu. You will surely be blessed with a long life." Xu Man said gratefully.
Lu Zhen didn’t stay there any longer and began walking up the stairs.
He had to go back to his wife.
He knew that they had fish and other types of fresh meat in the warehouse, but that didn’t stop him from being happy that he had gotten his wife fresh fish.
Back in the Lu family apartment, Assistant Yao took a few fish to go and cook with his mother then they headed back home.
Lu Zhen gave the rest of the fish to Uncle Li to cook.
"These fish look so healthy. It seems that even though humans lack food in the apocalypse, the same isn’t true for animals. At least, not for fish." Uncle Li commented while examining the different fish left in the basket.
"That’s a good thing. No matter how healthy they are, they can only turn into our food." Auntie Li replied to her husband and the two shared a laugh.
Leng Pan urged Lu Zhen to go and take a shower first to get rid of the cold caused by the rain outside.
They had gone fishing with the rain still pouring. So, they needed to be careful.
When Lu Zhen came back from taking a shower, Leng Pan had prepared a large cup of tea made from spiritual spring water.
She also gave one to Lu Hao.
She didn’t want him to feel as if he was being excluded even though he wasn’t completely human.
Since they had accepted him as part of the family, he had to be treated well too.
"I wonder why these fish haven’t been affected by the zombie virus. Is there anything special about them" Leng Pan asked curiously.
After the meteorites fell months ago, not to mention humans turned into zombies, even plants mutated and started feeding on living things.
However, why was there no change in the fish? Was it because fish lived in water and weren’t exposed to the gas that spread the virus, or was there another reason?
Leng Pan couldn’t help but wonder.
"Maybe there is a reason the fish didn’t turn into zombies. Didn’t we start a research department in the base? We can send some samples to the researchers there and see if they find anything. It’s possible that this is a key to ending the apocalypse." Li Yunjia suggested and Leng Pan felt it made sense.
If the researchers find out the reason the fish had clearly mutated but didn’t carry the zombie virus, humanity might have a chance of survival.
"Then I won’t cook all of them. I will leave a few behind for experiments." Uncle Li said.
"No need, Uncle, we can just catch more. Besides, for experiments, I think it’s better for them to be selected carefully and it’s better if they are still alive." Lu Zhen rejected Uncle Li’s idea.
"Alright then. I will cook the fish in different ways for you all to taste. Let’s see if my superpower has improved." Uncle Li smiled and headed to the kitchen to cook.
"Are we going to catch more fish and preserve them while there is still time?" Li Yunjia suddenly asked.
Everyone immediately understood that she was asking about keeping some in the warehouse inside the space bangle.
"Well, we are in the apocalypse and you can never have too much food. So, catching more fish if possible and preserving them for the future isn’t a bad idea." Leng Pan replied thoughtfully.
"In that case, Ah Zhen, from tomorrow, go out with your brothers to catch fish." Li Yunjia ordered.
