Chapter 289: The old master to the rescue
"Mother saw me and asked me not to tell anyone but it killed me to keep that secret from you all. What kind of logic is that, one child existing to work for the well-being of the other like an ox? Now we know why aunt boldly made such ugly entitled statements like your money belongs to me, mother is not her sister." Chi Zimo said in conclusion.
He was shaking his head in total disappointment over the hand that life had dealt his mother.
For a while, everyone remained silent, not knowing what to say or do about the situation at hand. The only sound in the house was that of Pearl who was mewing loudly and persistently in her basket.
The maids brought in tea and snacks and then they left quietly. Mei-Mei too had returned with her mouth dirty, covered in red strawberry jam.
"So what is your mother saying about all this?" the old madam asked after a while.
"She is in shock." Chi Rui answered.
Qi Qing returned with a warm towel and Chi Lian wiped Mei-Mei’s face despite the little girl’s struggles not to be cleaned.
After Qi Qing left, the old master asked Chi Wei, "What is your next step because you need to find out if your mother was adopted or stolen. Do you know that all members of aristocratic families register their DNA with the hospital here in the courts because back then the rebels came up with a plan of infiltrating the families by switching out the true descendants for their own children children who would later be activated to destroy the roots of the empire?
The plot was discovered when a maid was caught swapping the crown prince for another child. She confessed everything after interrogation and then all hell broke loose."
"I remember this," the old madam interjected with her own recollection of events. "All families were gathered in one place here and samples were forcefully taken. It turned out that in almost every family an impostor was living under the disguise of the real child. You should have seen the after math, so many arrests were made.
A lot of people were involved in the scheme from doctors and nurses to servants in the homes. From then on, DNA tests are done on the children immediately after birth. Some families even do them before the child is born."
