Chapter 272: Keep It Pushing
When I first received this assignment, I thought, 'Well, at this age, I can't believe they finally put me in charge of a young knight. It should've never happened. Who was the lunatic who thought it a good idea?' My whole career, I’d pushed my magic. Wrote papers. And, well, admittedly, I've gone a little mad. Wasting my time teaching? What a useless thing to do, no one was going to pick up what I’ve learned. It’s too complex!
Truth be told, I didn't wanna deal with the annoying little bastards. Youth always believes that they have the right of things. They don’t consider the perspective time gives. They don't have the tools developed after years of study, or the willingness to push themselves when they think things aren't possible.
Their accomplishments don't quite carry the same weight as those of someone who has struggled for decades.
I thought, when Boldwick first approached me, 'What a useless thing. Who is this snotty brat thinking he rules the world?'
I still think that. Ha. What a joke of a noble, so haughty and full of himself.
But I know now. I think I knew then, after meeting him. Goddess knows I didn’t want to admit it.
Those years I spent toiling, working on my glyphs that few in the Kingdom understood. It was time spent not for me. I thought it was for me then. To prove my magic. To prove my theories. To improve my status.
When I look at that little shit stain, his nose turned up at everything, I think. What if I were his age, with that mana, and with that natural talent, and my vetted magic research already existed? Where then would I be now? Now here I am, wondering if maybe all those years of struggle weren't actually for me, but for someone else.
Ugh. Just the thought of it gives me a headache, a mild case of heartburn, and makes me want to slap a child.
