Chapter 271: Dressing Down
Enide paced back and forth as the rest of the Knights arrived, coming in her Pack’s cars.
Garin, of course, scrambled off the hood of the car and gave her a panicked look, like she had the solution. The two other Knights had seen him, along with Bedwyr and Colin. It was safe to say his cover was blown to shit. She liked the guy and was currently thinking through everything in her power to help him out… but it was fucked.
There was no way out of here. She could teleport him, but the idea of dragging them both through the void with the voices in her head and the stares… well… she didn’t even want to go by herself, and that was much safer than the few times she brought a passenger.
Why the fuck did you get out of the trunk?
And why was he such a good shot—she’d been struggling to line up her las-rifle with the monster when he fired. Which meant that during the fight, he'd crawled out of the car and pulled off the perfect shot from very far away, and done it in a space of time she hadn't even seen.
She stopped her pacing. The cars were closing in, and she whispered, “What’s the plan here, Garin?”
He didn’t respond. He was staring at the cars, his jaw going slack. She traced his line of sight and noticed that in the lead car was Boldwick. And they were in clear sight.
“Oh. You’re so fucked. Oh. We’re so fucked.” She admitted that there was nothing to do since they’d been outed in all the ways possible. For a Knight like that, he most certainly would not miss his student with his rifle, right near the battlefield. A student who should be buried behind the Kingdom walls, safe and sound, rather than risking his life here.
So? You claim to be free. Spirit him away, if that’s all there is to life, silly. Unless, maybe it isn’t. The voice invaded her head, a breathless whisper, but, paradoxically, so loud. Every day, it got louder. Got clearer. Being around people wasn’t even suppressing it anymore. Enide shuddered.
