Rivers of the Night

Chapter 475: Tribulation (9)

Ott’s eyes widened as his fingers shattered across Theron’s armor. His nails were bent back and torn off, his ligaments snapping on impact as his fingers were peeled back no less than their protective shielding had been.

Blood splattered and flesh bloomed like rosy flowers on impact, his hand going from a golden mesh of god-like might to a mangled mess of waning life in a single instant of time.

The shocking reversal was no less abrupt than Theron’s battle with Juliax. It was something that Ott had been planning for, waiting on, patiently biding his time against, and yet he was still caught off guard.

He only had himself to blame.

The scholar thought himself to be quite clever, layering on properties of light one after another, slightly changing his attack every time so that Theron couldn’t get a bead on it. In his opinion, no matter how much of a genius Theron was, he wasn’t a Light Mancer. So long as Ott changed the principles of control he used with every attack, he would be able to continue to take Theron off guard.

If Ott, on top of that, likewise used a brutish, violent approach that took advantage of his cultivation and Theron’s current weakness, it would be even easier to ensure victory.

Unfortunately for Ott, he misunderstood one thing.

That time in the library... it had taught Theron something quite significant, and that was all the underlying principles of the world. Ott thought he couldn’t understand Light Mana as much as he did, but Theron, while he couldn’t actually control Light Mana, probably understood the underlying principles and Laws that governed it far better than Ott could even begin to fathom.

When it came down to it, Theron, too, was just waiting for the perfect time—waiting for Ott to use a principle that could be easily countered.

And then Ott went and gave him that chance on a silver platter, using a series of mirrors and a reflective sort of Law to concentrate all the light energy onto his palms.

It was a good attempt, an excellent display of Mana Control, a true beacon of what the strongest of this continent were capable of.

Unfortunately for Ott, as good as his mirrors were at reflecting and refracting light, Theron’s water was even better.
